This also got me wondering about which planes were "must haves" for FS2002 and FS9 (while I build the new hangers for both sims).

The FSD T-38 is one of those planes you need to have installed. Not just in terms of performance, but also things like useful gauges you can use in other planes.

As for goto aircraft
Realair Spit (its payware but cant get this now) Bear Mig17, and the old Virtavia/Alpha F4 Phantom. I have much more recent payware phantoms in FS9 and X but i keep coming back to this one

I guess I'd also add the Hawk/Goshawk series from IRIS/DSB. For both FS9 and FS2002. :wiggle:

Ian, believe it or not, I got most of the Alpha/Virtavia (later) Phantoms working in FS2002. The biggest trick was to get the wheel brakes working.
Those MDL files for the first two versions are the max that FS02 can handle.
The Maul is great but that also brings up any of Brian Gladden's Pipers. :loyal:

T.K., for me its a tough call between the Alphasim P-47/P-51 combo and the W.o.P. models.
W.o.P. aircraft fly like the day they left the plant, Alpha planes fly like they've been carrying some ammo for a while. :unsure:

I almost forgot my true GOAT. The Alpha Sikorski S 55. Probably the easiest chopper to fly in FS9 and FS02 plus its VERY handy for doing scenery design and lay-out.

This is my Go-To plane for carrier landings in FS9, although I learned how to it with the Alpha RA-5C
With Dean's Hornet, he did a great job using a "digital" FD. You use the stick and rudder to tell the flight computer what to do.
Its done quite well, you just have to get used to it. Its like the stick also sets the Trim settings while you do your thing.

Its almost freeware, just log in to Just Flight and you'll find several F/A-18C & D downloads. Once you have an account (its free, just register), you can download and install them. :wiggle: Good representation for repaints, you just have to be careful because different models use different texture names. This isn't a big deal, you just might need to rename some textures.

Its a question which is impossible to answer and in the same line as "what is your favorite food". My favorite food is very much depending on my "taste of the day". Today it was beans and patatoes, but tomorrow I might prefer a steak.

But nevertheless I gave the question a good thought. To start, I limited my choice to freeware. And immediately came to the conclusion that are far too many models to choose from. For me the highest quality model isn't automatically the best model. It should give me a good feeling as well.

I recently flew Rick Piper's FS9 Provost for a while and I still like it as much as the first time I flew it. And today we have loads of scenery to fit the model. I have the same feeling with Dave Garwood's Hunters. And there are many more. These models are super nice and give me a great feeling.

But I have to choose one, as there can of course only be one "Greatest Of All Times". And when I have to limit myself to one, it must be a completely different one.

Stuart Green's Fokker D.VII was its time very much ahead. It is nearly 20 years old and when released it had animations unseen before. The detail level was icredible. And even according todays standards, it is still an amazing model. And flying it still gives me that special feeling.

So today my choice is this one. Tomorrow I might choose Milton Shupe's Beech D18 or his Douglas A20G. Or the BF110 nightfighter by the GroundCrew, or Lagaffe's abd Nieuport 17, or one of Manuele Villa's incredible models, or.............

As said by trying to answer this question, you can only make a fool of yourself ;)

Among the very few planes I ever flew more than once is Milton's Twin Beech. I'm sure I've flown it more than any other. But I mostly only fly when I make test flights on a project David and I are working on, so more than any other is still probably less than half a dozen times.

Very recognisable Mick! :LOL: Like you I'm mainly flying the models I am (re)painting and in the past the models I was (beta) testing. (There were German pilots which had less flying hours on the FW190, than I had after we were finished testing them ;)).

There are some exemptions, last week when I came back from 3 weeks in France, where I was "off grid", I fired up FSX and flew Dave Garwood's beautful Mosquito along the route I had followed driving back from France.
In the past I flew over the Atlantic Ocean in Manuele Villa's SM.79, and I I did long range testing, to check virtual fuel consumption. I tried some long flights in the Pacific, but my navigation skills were not up to the task.
Especially with Daan "Dutchcheeseblend" Kaasjager's long range Fokker T.V for FSX this was quite an event.....

But the fact that I can remember these flight, actually shows how rare they were.

A model I never repainted but flew quite often. It is even older than the Stuart Green Fokker, but it has a astonishing VC even according today's standards.
