**The OFFICIAL All Sims Air Tour Thread**

Rob and I finally finished the Air Tour last night but it turned out to be a challenge from start to finish! We had picked GAS Super Stearmans as the ride of choice but within the first five minutes of getting set up and not even taxiing out to the runway Rob had a crash with a OOM error! If you remember we encountered the same problem with the same aircraft before so it does indeed look like there is a memory leak in multi-player just like when we fly the Lionheart Belanca Vikings together! To fix it Rob switched to a different biplane and aliased me in JoinFS to the same type while I stayed in the Super Stearman and aliased Rob to a regular Stearman. That fixed the OOM issues and we could taxi out to the runway.

L27_01.png

It was nice to be able to see each other and the ground and to actually enjoy the scenery but as usual things were about to change.

L27_02.png

Once more the familiar fog returned and visibility was reduced to absolute zero for several minutes.

L27_03.png

It was during the grey out period that I started to notice a potential problem on the gauges as I had nothing better to look at outside the cockpit. When I launched on the flight I had wrong wrongly assumed that because I had changed aircraft it would have defaulted to full fuel tanks! WRONG! The sim had used the fuel remaining from the previous leg and I was alarmed to see that I was less than halfway into the leg and my fuel gauge was showing half tanks! I popped open the aircraft information window in Little NavMap and checked current fuel burn against distance to travel and was alarmed to see that 'fuel remaining' was slightly less than 'distance remaining'! EEK!

The rest of the flight was spent closely monitoring fuel burn, throttle and prop positions and distance to go! Rob dutifully stayed close by just so that he had the co-ordinates of any crash site for the authorities! By backing off on the power and staying on the 'pink line' until I could see the airfield perimeter fence before swinging around for a final approach I managed to eke out enough fuel to get home. I suspect the fuel gauge in the Super Stearman is less than accurate to be honest as it had been sitting on 'E' for 10 minutes before I took this shot and I had been relying on the <SHIFT+Z> fuel value for reference along with the Little NavMap data. If you are wondering why I am so far off the centre-line on final it's because I had a 10-12 knot crosswind to deal with as I hadn't got the fuel to go round to the best runway and that wind had been on my nose for miles which didn't help the fuel situation!

L27_04.png

I got down safe and checked the <SHIFT+Z> fuel status and I had 6% of fuel left in the tanks! Boy that was close!

L27_05.png

As Rob had now finished his 'nurse maid' duties and seeing as it was the end of an epic trip he thought it was fitting to throw in some 'barn storming' antics! Starting with an inverted low pass which probably scared the bejesus out of the poor AI Cherokee pilot who was on very short final in the background!

L27_06.png

The low pass was converted into a barrel roll ............

L27_07.png

............ before pulling a tight 'S' turn to line up with the runway.

L27_08.png

He 'greased' the landing for a perfect end to a very enjoyable Air Tour 2025!

L27_09.png

I had just enough fuel to taxi back to the apron to close out the trip.

L27_10.png

At this point Rob and I sat and 'rag chewed' for a while going over the tour and wondering what we were going to do with ourselves now it was done. We both decided that we are done with the snow, fog and gloom as we get enough of that in real life at the moment seeing as we both live in Canada. We both want some warmth and sunshine so our next multiplayer flying adventures are likely to be south of the equator somewhere but as yet we don't know where or in what. Decisions, decisions!

Thanks to 'ViperPilot2' for putting on the event and to all the other pilots taking part, it's been a blast and a reminder of the the fun times we had in past events and in the annual Round the World Races SOH used to take part in along with Avsim.com, Flightsim.com and for a couple of races the 'iFlyOnline' team.

:ernaehrung004:

Larry (Tako_Kichi) and Rob (SirGalahad) signing off for now and we'll catch you on the next one!

I had 6% of fuel left in the tanks

As a prelude to our recreation of the Australia Air Race of '76 last year I decided to fly my Beech C17, painted as one that actually participated in the event, from Columbus, Ohio, to Perth, Australia. Up through the Pacific northwest, across Alaska and the Bering Straight, south through Siberia, Sakhalin, Japan, Guam, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, into north Australia then follow the coast west to Perth. Plotting the flight one leg at a time with Destination Finder all was well till Siberia when it seemed I might have to turn back; no airports! 500 miles south or southwest - nothing, 600, 700 miles - nothing. Finally found an airport just over 900 miles away ...and my airplane has a nominal range of 800 miles. Oh well, I've come this far; hope there's a nice flat spot of tundra to land on and call a fuel truck ....and hope they can find a white airplane in Siberia. I barely throttled up for take-off, let her use the entire runway, then climb at a leisurely 300ft/min to 5k ft; tooling along at 140kt with the engine barely ticking over in this plane is like driving cross country in a Ferrari at 30mph. Five hours later a big red fuel light is glaring at me, there's probably more gas in me than in the tanks. Six hours and the airport appears at the edge of the GPS map; I stay at 4500ft til the last minute, throttle back to idle and virtually glide in, dropping the gear at the last minute. Shut down with 2% fuel left, perhaps another fifteen minutes of flight. Only a fool would attempt this in RL ...good thing I never got a pilots license.

Ask DD26 about his practice flight for the RTWR one year. He was flying the AlphaSim DH Hornet in FS9 and it was an 'iffy' leg for that aircraft. He ran into some headwinds and the 'barely enough fuel' situation became an 'absolutely not enough fuel' situation 30 miles out from the destination when the engines suddenly went quiet! He was at about 18,000 ft and had to glide to the destination with dead engines! He stayed as high as possible for as long as possible and then made a Stuka style dive for the airport when it came in sight! He made it but it was a white knuckle experience.

That aircraft also came close to killing me in a real leg in the race too! I was running manual mixture to eke out the fuel and about 20 miles out from the destination started the descent from critical altitude which is where we ran for the most speed. A few seconds later my aircraft went into a flat spin and started to drop like a stone! The pilot waiting to take the baton for the next leg could see my icon spinning on FSNav and asked if I was OK on the TeamSpeak channel but unfortunately I couldn't answer him as I was too busy trying not to crash. I had to get my wife to hold the stick while I tried to sort out the issue and I suddenly realized what had gone wrong. My left engine had died but my right engine was still running at full throttle which is what sent me into the flat spin! I shut the right throttle which slowed the spin considerably and then tried to re-start the left engine but it wouldn't catch. Then it hit me, I was running manual mixture and in my descent the left engine had 'leaned out' and stalled because I hadn't advanced the mixture lever as I came down. I rammed the mixture controls full forward and re-started the left engine and it fired right up! I could then use both engines to get out of the spin, find out which direction I was pointing in and get back on track to the destination. In the time it took me to figure out what had happened and how to fix it I had lost 12,000 ft of altitude and several years off my life! I did make it safely to the destination and passed on the baton but I was shaking like a leaf for a while afterwards!

Wondering where everyone is up to on the route? Gaggle status update (route maps 1/2):
Gaggle Sitrep. Further to my last post, backtracked through the thread to see where the 'gaggle' is strewn out along the route (pic 1/2).
(Dates are either the flight or post date, might be a few errors, it doesn't really matter. [Hassles with format, set to Courier New, had to pad leg number with ... . 27 airports/legs.])

Sat Dec 26 (flight date) Tako_Kichi KGDK(I19)>KYIP. Entire route completed! Congrats!

Actually on holidays far from my flying rig. Will be back in January. Vfr flight plans are ready and free airports sceneries ready to be installed.
It’s a pleasure to follow every one flying this rally.
Happy new year to all

Event goes until end of Jan, so plenty of time for anyone to make a start at KYIP. Myself, am doing only 2 legs, Leg 1 KYIP>KBTL, started it over a week ago but had to Pause, completed yesterday, after getting lost! (will post about it soon). Intend to relocate to KRIC Richmond and from there get myself to KMQI Dare County and fly Leg 22, a Sopwith Camel to KFFA Kittyhawk as a tribute to the whole Kittyhawk history.

(Apologies, well not really, for the long series of screenshots, but I have had my very own adventure within the Adventure. Am an 'armchair copilot/passenger' with the rest of the gaggle, enjoying reading your posts and travelling vicariously with you (as have others), my involvement in this Adventure is mainly practising getting out and into unknown airports with ATC support.)

So, finally getting a chance to post my story. Started Leg 1 KYIP>KBTL Tue Dec 16 but Paused once heading west. After a few attempts to complete it, did so yesterday. Have learnt alot. Reflections:
1. In winter, in the parts of the world that have snow, a very dull landscape, plus I lose my visual references.
2. In a part of the world I don't know, and flat terrain, no visual clues to whereabouts.
3. Am unused to using nav aids, e.g. GPS. Thought I was ontrack to KBTL but noticed after awhile that the 'distance to' was increasing! Huh? I'm flying away from my destination. What's going on. So Paused, yet again, to sort things out. Using the Map, I determined I'd long passed KBTL and was west of it (funny, I was wondering why it was taking so long, in real time, to do the short 50 odd mile hop). So had to backtrack. Got onto course. Wanting to do things 'properly', under ATC directions, I did join the KBTL 'left circuit' correctly for runway 23, entering at about 1k ft AGL. The little hired Cessna 152 was a dream to fly, nice and slow and steady. Lined up good, and gently down.

View attachment 179252

My next leg will be Leg KMQI Dare County > KFFA Kittyhawk in a Sopwith Camel (the only pre-WW2 aircraft in my FS2002 default fleet). Will be very cold but short. (Am now driving back to Detroit International in a hire car, having left the hired C152 at KBTL. Am rejoining the Concorde entourage, 'Squits Porridge Oats Foundation' owned and operated, and the rest of the Concorde entourage. We intend to fly to Richmond, which we can land on as it has a long 10k' runway. I'll then get myself to KMQI to pick up the loaned Camel. Will attempt no nav aids, in the true spirit of that aircraft's era, and fly dead-reckoning to KFFA. What could possibly go wrong!

(PS: Writing this sipping a lovely glass (or 2) of lovely Aussie dry white wine, 'sauvignon blanc', yum! And today is lovely and mild, in our subtropical climate in mid-summer here in the southern hemisphere, been sweltering sticky days, over 35C (thank God for our little pool), then cool and rainy yesterday, but perfect today, 27 degrees C now at 5 pm. Life can be sweet!!!)

As I promised I flew the Albatross down to Kansas City, or rather I was BLOWN down there! I had a serious tailwind the entire trip, that was 45 kts, gusting 50, and it made for a rather bumpy ride too. The approach to KMKC was VERY gusty and about 25 deg crosswind too. I'm not sure they'd have allowed an Albatross to land in such conditions in the RW, but we're made of sterner stuff here in FS World! :)

Here I am waiting to start up at Des Moines, and it's SNOWING of course, but at least the wind has changed to a northerly now.

Leg 06-a.jpg

The Albatross doesn't turn too easily on the ground and it took a bit of engine assistance to get her through the maze of taxiways onto the 31 runway, but eventually got there OK, cleared my flight with the Tower and took off. With a 35 kt headwind she fairly leapt into the air, and I was able to make a swift 180 deg. turn to the south very quickly.

Leg 06-b.jpg

Naturally it was still snowing, this was Iowa in December of course, but maybe 15 nms. further south it stopped and cleared up a trifle, and I was able to see the ultra flat Iowa scenery. It's as flat as the Netherlands, but without the canals, tulips or cheese........... :)

Leg 06-c.jpg

But with my luck this wasn't to last and before I got to the Missouri state line the cloud had socked in and I was very IFR for much of the rest of the trip.

Leg 06-d.jpg

Active Sky was telling me that conditions at Kansas City were much clearer though, but still with a hefty wind, so I pressed on. Maybe 10 miles north of Kansas City I broke out into clear sky and started my descent into KWKC

Leg 06-e.jpg

Looking ahead for the twists and turns of the Missouri River, I soon caught sight of the downtown airport, Wheeler Field, over to my right as I passed it at around 2500 ft, heading south to turn onto the approach for the 01 runway there.

Leg 06-f.jpg

The wind was very gusty indeed and I had to keep the airspeed up to maintain proper control authority, and as a result I overshot from my base leg and had to make some radical turns to get back onto the centre line. But I managed it OK, as you can see here. One thing that did amaze me was the massive levee that surrounds the airfield, but I guess they learned through some floods in the past!

Leg 06-g.jpg

As suggested in the Pilot's Notes I went for a 'wheeler landing' again, which went just fine. The Albatross certainly looks a picture in this position, fully and totally streamlined.

Leg 06-h.jpg

Luckily KMKC doesn't have too many sharp turns on its taxiways and I was able to park up and report to Flight Control fairly easily. Here I am with the downtown city skyline across the river from me.

But there's one rather odd question, how come Kansas City ISN'T actually in Kansas, it's just over the river in Missouri?!

Leg 06-i.jpg

So that's another leg of the Tour completed and a very fast one too as I averaged 226 kts. on the whole flight. That's moving along a bit for a 1930's airliner!

I'll dig out something different for the next leg or so, but I won't forget the Albatross, it's a delight to fly and it's FAST! (y)

Am having Internet access glitches ongoing, so my report yesterday is incomplete. Here are the rest of the screenshots.
(Whilst I didn't fly a classic plane, hence my story is probably not of interest per se to the gaggle, I did do the flight, learnt a lot and complied with the Chachapoya prime directive - "HAVE FUN"!)

KYIP. Taxiing out, some other traffic to deal with.
1767045170611.png

Airport was confusing for me, crossing runways.
1767047097577.png

Finally able to take off and head west.
1767046946566.jpeg

Considerable airborne traffic to deal with, so no time to relax, however once stablisied on cruise, did get some nice views including lakes.
1767047936774.png

Approaching KBTL Kellog. Plenty of radio work.
1767048479886.png

Wanting to do things 'properly', got into the circuit nicely at 1k' agl, and nice distance from strip on downwind. (The little C152 was easy to fly the circuit, very stable and nice and slow, unlike the challenge of the larger aircraft especially jetliners).
1767049133570.png

Final, lined up nicely. (Yes, I know the mantra, 'Make a long approach if possible, so plenty of time to set up for landing'.)
1767051308190.png

Close to touchdown. Once down, I taxied to GA parking.
1767052341725.png

Whilst suffering numerous issues, including getting lost, I did enjoy the flight. Afterwards, drove a hire car back to Detroit International to rejoin the Concorde entourage.

But it IS! Kansas City, KS is in Kansas. Kansas City, MO is in Misery. When it was all one big "Kansas Territory", back in the early 1800's it was one city. Then someone redrew a line on a map and made two states and the name-game began. You can go down quite a rabbit hole trying to decipher the Wiki articles.
