What add-ons for new install

Hi all.:wavey:

Just received my CFS2 CD set and did a stock install. I know from reading CFS2 posts there are a lot of modification that can be done to improve the sim over the stock version.

Can you direct me to a guide? I know I will learn a lot by reading the SDK, but the SDK won't tell me about the quality of specific add-ons.

Is there a place I can get advice on essential files to make the sim up to date?

I like the ETO and want to fly B17's.

Thank you for your suggestions, Al

B17Sam...welcome to the Basement and to CFS2...the best combat sim on the face of the earth.

For B-17s, look no further than the Donationware B-17 package. Very nice models, great flight characteristics. $15 bucks goes to support the site and you get a nice selection of Forts.

Grab The B-24 Guy's overhauls for the stock aircraft. This is a must! Then once you have those installs all done, grab the package of shined MDLs that I uploaded for them...really give the stock planes a boost in appearance.

Check out Rhumbafloppy's replacement mesh sets....LOD5, LOD7, and LOD8. And there is another file with a funny name....dem4km.bgl. These mesh files will take the CFS2 world from being bland and inaccurate to WOW and pretty darn accurate. I used the dem4km.bgl, LOD5 and LOD7 packages in my FS2004 install and saw a dramatic improvement in that sim as well.

Sounds...replace all the stock aircraft sounds with those by Lawdog2360. They will blow you away!

I know that others will chime in with more detailed "must have" lists...but this will get you started.

You need some . . .

Beaufighters!!!
That is what you need. I think there might be some available in the download section . . .

:monkies:

This is just the king of info I needed to get.

I've been flight simming since FS98, but never got into CFS 1 or 2. Guess you can call me a 'noob':faint:
thanks, Al

Oh boy...you've got a lot to look forward to. We're here to answer any questions.

Great bunch!

Hummm...me-thinks I've got a lot to learn....

You all have made me feel welcome! Thank you!

I would recommend playing the sim in the PTO for a while first untill you get used to it. Then add in the ETO stuff or do a seperate ETO installation.

Look at getting Aeroplane Heaven's Hurricanes. Those are amazing. Also, look for Pombee's 3 million skins for the Hurris, and you'll be amazed.

Look for a Macchi Mc.202 in the Download section. Beautiful fighter!

P-51s, look no further than the one released by Alphasim for free! Only 'Stang you'll ever need!

There's other things I would list, but I'm out of time, as usual lol! :gossip:

ETO add ons

I am setting up a new ETO: my main add-ons are:
Opareas_Update_v15 (for jumping around in Mission Builder)
Non-Combat Ships Fix (so they steer properly)
in the controls, Yaw right = "Enter" (if you use the keyboard at all)
Dem4km.bgl
Lod5, Lod7, Lod8; brings the whole place to life!
Watermasking
CFS2 seasons 5 seasons worth of textures that you can swap in and out through the Scenery Library
Euro_textures by Stiz, Water_textures by Stiz -- or Eurowater if you prefer more blue and less green
CFS Rwinst gives you simple runways on the CFS1 airfields
AcMan to look after your planes

hope that helps

It all helps. Thanks a bunch to everyone.

It's a bit like having to be a grown up adult overnight. Need some time to do homework on CFS2 to be properly 'edju-ma-kated'.

Well, the CFS2 changes have begun. I've learned a lot from just looking at the file structure of the sim and reading some of the 'cfg' files.

A screenshot of an ETO installation would be very helpful. I assume that besides the mesh files I need to add airports and objects to get other theaters to work. Noticed that some folks install theaters of operation in separate sim installs. Is that right, or did I misunderstand?

Plane installs are easy enough. The new mesh files seem to install okay. Now it's on to specific scenery mods. I would like to improve the appearance of the objects displayed. Any recommendation on texture updates for scenery object?

Going to get the donationware B17 package today.

B17Sam,

Try this: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.php?lloc=downloads&loc=downloads&page=info&FileID=12468

I gotta do an update to this one of these days....Rhumbaflappy's mesh has to be included, but this is sufficient to get you started.

Only trouble is...Sander's site is down today. (Sigh)

How's this for a screenshot?

(It's Brunosk's Supermarine Spitfire Mk. Vc circling Coningsby with an ETO skin, and Woodhall Spa in the background, based on top of Sander's ETO landclass)

Maskrider's airfields. Bring a whole new feel to the game. Much better than stock. There was also an ADF addon that allowed you to navigate using instruments.
