Microsoft Flight Simulator 1935

I've moved fully on to MSFS 2024 for general flying, as virtually all of the add-ons I use work there, and I enjoy the various performance, visual, and flight model improvements. I had debated finally deleting MSFS 2020, until I had a wonderful idea.

I realized I'd purchased a bunch of the Redwing 1935 airports a while back in discounted bundles, and not done much flying around them. They replaced modern airports, and were Marketplace items, so it was a pain to use them when 2020 was my primary sim. But now I could just make them my default and strip out everything modern in the older sim!

I went into the content manager, downloaded all of the 1935 airports, and deleted all of my modern aircraft.

Then I went into Addons Linker and enabled all of my 1910-1945 airplanes, Arrows Across America, and my WW2 airports.

So now, I have a dedicated 1940s-and-earlier flight sim. I'll pick up more of the US Redwing 1935 airports next time they go on sale, and I also have Bagalou's 1935 additions and a few other random retro airports for 2020. No more hassle configuring the sim, as 2020 will only be used as a dedicated WW2-and-earlier sim. I can just leave Addons Linker untouched. :)

Would be awesome if someday there was a way to replace the scenery and navaids with period stuff, but in the meantime, this is as much fun as my old CalClassics's FS2004 setup.

I'm in Germany in 1935, and as far as navigation goes, there are 189 lighthouses in Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
You navigate from lighthouse to lighthouse to your destination airport, and then you fly over the airport's fixed lights to find your landing direction.

Denny: it's a very fun idea ! You intrigued me to the point that I looked up scenes from Bagolu and Redwings online.

Unfortunately, Redwings only releases them on the MarketPlace and individually. If they had the idea of making bundles by region, I think that would be very appreciated.

Looks like a kind of Golden Wings 4 set up :). I had a whole website dedicated to Golden Wings 3 at one time - with all the pre 1940 downloads available. Then one or two people pissed me off with their ungratefulness and other things in life came along that took up my time......... God Bless Bill Lyons though - way ahead of most. I often think a sim just dedicated to the 'Golden Age of Aviation' - with period scenery, would do well - but I guess there wasn't much satellite information around to *tell us what the world really looked like then.. :)

I don't get this developers putting things only on Marketplace. It's bad business putting all your eggs in one basket and only having one route to market. Seen so many small businesses go belly up over the years for just doing that. It's the only vendor I can't buy from because most of my credit/debit cards are registered in another country from the one I live in most of the time now. No payment through paypal or anything. Tried 4 cards including one from the bank I use whilst living here and they have all been declined or I can't get my Microsoft account to accept them -used all of my cards with multiple other vendors, no issues. Some guys have said MS has better security to stop their stuff from being pirated - but other developers don't give this a lot of creedance. The former have lost sales to me and my money, so their loss.

Great solution to use FS2020 like this.

Back in the FSX days one used to able to run multiple versions of the Sim. I set one up for modern world and one for 1970's. You could also set up AI traffic as appropriate for the period with the MAIW files. It was so much fun to optimise your add-ons to suit the particular sim era. In one version I could fly Kirks F-16's and Mirage F-1's in the other Dave G's Jet Provosts and various Canberras and VC-10's etc Great times..

I remember there was an add-on (for FSX or FS9, I don't remember) that transported the world and scenery to the golden age of aviation.

Redwing Sim seems to be the only third-party version now (one of the reasons I play MSFS2020, and now the Mi-2 Hoplite is available).

Everything is here:
and on the Marketplace.

I buy on the Marketplace if I can't find something elsewhere. Although I was tempted to buy two planes and two paint jobs that were much cheaper on sale than elsewhere, and I really regretted it.

Regarding REDWING, there are a lot of historical planes, so those 1935 airfields are great.

Golden Wings 3 is what it was by Bill Lyons and a few others https://www.sim-outhouse.org/freeflight/GW3.html I seem to remember there was alot more available I think on my website there where at least over a 100 in period planes to choose from -most freeware. Have to say I think for functionality, not graphics, I think Flightsim was at its peak with FS9. I saw things done with that version I have never seen since. In some ways MSFS 2020 I am currently using seems a retrograde step in actual functionality and what you can do when compared with FSX/PD3. There are so many things like AI for instance that seem so much harder to set up properly.

This is a really great idea! I recently made the transition to 2024 but still kept 2020 installed as a "backup" in case I encountered any teething issues with the newer sim. So far, it's been almost entirely seamless (knock on wood). I think I will follow suit and convert my 2020 installation to a retro classic sim as well.

Golden Wings 3 is what it was by Bill Lyons and a few others...

There was also a Silver Wings package if I recall correctly, which was intended as a bridge between the pre-WWII Golden Wings era and the Jet Age. It was ideal for mid-1940s to late 50s ops.

Silver Wings essentially only changes the autogen environment, but not the airfields. It strikes me more that the efforts to create a vintage world are currently limited to the USA, South America, and Western Europe. In this respect, FS9 is already further along with Arctic sceneries, the Imperial Routes, and the Sahara and Middle East areas. The interwar years have also been expanded, and everything free of costs. IMO there's still some catching up to do for MSFS2020.

You could definitely set up FS9/FSX much better for other eras. I think I had the entire Calclassics website installed. Wish there was a way to do similar for FS2020/24, but the demands of the current systems and visual details are just too high. I’d be perfectly happy flying FSX detail native MSFS ports of the old Convairs, etc. and the texture mafia and the circuit breaker Cosa Nostra could just shut it and not download them. But alas, doesn’t look likely.

And I can’t enjoy FSX/P3D anymore… Not just the visuals, but the feeling of flight. They feel so much on rails… Otherwise, I’d totally set up one of those with the old CalClassics/Golden Wings stuff.

My FS9 was completely Silver Wings. Loved it!

As of FSX and P3D it was "hybrid"...
