The Boeing definitely looked like a throwback design both aesthetically and technically. Although it was fast, maneuverable, and highly capable, it certainly was not sleek and sexy looking and the USAF loves sleek and sexy looking aircraft.
 
There was a great show on the Discovery Channel that featured the race between the F-35 and the X-32. The show was called "Wings" The development of the Joint Forces Strike Fighter.

I remember the Discovery series, "Wings". It was a great series from a time when Discovery Channel and History Channel were worth watching.
