Short Stirling

Tango Romeo posted a file called "brit_bombs.zip" at Simviation which contains a .DP called "wep_bb_ap.dp" that is supposed to represent a 2000 lb AP bomb. There is also a "wep_bb.dp" for a non-AP bomb - perhaps this could be a 2000 lb HC bomb ? ? ?

Ro, I tried those two bombs but unfortunately, like the US bombs, they are too large for the bomb cells.

Hello Gents
Can you confirm me than 2000 Lbs bombs carried by the Stirling were 2000 Lbs HC, I don't find any 2000 Lbs MC in UT document, and anywhere else...

A picture is worth a thousand words!

Are the two bombs in the foreground a 250lb and a 500lb? What type is the large bomb? The 2000lb HC had three pistols in the nose.

Kev,

Almost certainly an air-dropped mine, judging by the flat nose. Probably a mkI, but could also be the (slightly)smaller & lighter mkIV, introduced during 1941

Loading up for a Gardening op, Channel ports perhaps.

Must be an early war op, as the foreground teardrop bomb looks light coloured (pre-WW2 buff colour). I think both teardrop bombs are the same size (serious perspective distortion, the mine is much larger & longer than it appears in this photo), so likely some 500lb-ers just to top-up the droppable load...

Gents,
As someone mentioned, one of the (many) problems with the Stirling was it had a split bomb bay, so could not carry anything larger than a 2000lb HC bomb. John, yes early, see roundel on ac at rear, I think the Stirling being bombed up is for a land attack, as the buff 250lb-ders, are for that, and the 2000lb HC is a MkI with a covered para rear section...mine...bomb, what's in a name, they all go bang! :)

See below pics.

Cheers
