  • Special Server Maintenance

Just when you think you have everything running some what better...

You get a message from the Hosting company. Short story they need to move us to a new server. I have been working with them to plan a good date for all concerned. Here is what we have come up with as a schedule.

    1. November 4th 17:00 -5UTC shut off the forums and start backup proceedures. During this time there will be no access to the forums or the Resource Section.
    2. November 5th Continue with Backups and download same until complete.
    3. November 6th 7:00 turn over server to hosting company to move system to new server
    4. November 7th - 8th restore backups and upgrade forum software.

If all goes well we should be back online on November 8th.

To keep you updated we will post updates on AVSIM forums.

    Thank you for your support.

Mesh ...... yet again!

Picking up on a comment by AVP in the Malta 62 announcement:

"Mesh is important for the cliffs, especially around the waters at Hal Far. Ian and I use different mesh (I use Global 2010 payware) and was able to achieve shear cliffs at the waters edge as in real life but with Ian's mesh he had water climbing up the cliffs so we did our best to compromise in getting cliffs set back a bit to stop the water climbing up the sides of the cliff but again, users have different meshes or none at all so your results can be different."

What mesh is available for us FS9 dinosaurs these days? Back in the day I used to have a "Lifetime Membership" with FSGenesis but, to borrow from Douglas Adams, this was obviously some strange usage of the word 'lifetime' that I wasn't previously aware of; and the FSGlobal 2010 mentioned by AVP is also long gone. I know there are some good freeware meshes out there (the Yohann Baptiste over at Avsim are a prime example), but coverage is far from global; and I know, for global terrain mesh there is 70m mesh over at SimV, irritatingly split into 100s of sections. If that is the only game in town I'll settle in for a long & tedious download session, but I was hoping there were easier, more complete alternatives either freeware, like FreemeshX Global I use in my FSX install, or payware. I've read through Obio's "Making FS9 look great for free....." thread, but a lot of that is not applicable either. All advice appreciated.

@wolfebee89, I'm downloading quite a few meshes from Avsim, Giovanni Miduri is most certainly in the mix. There is good coverage of Europe, the Americas & South East Asia, but that still leaves a lot of gaps which are difficult to fill with the absence/demise of Flightsim, hence my looking for decent global coverage.

unfortunately with respect to your original remarks, your best bet would be second hand shops where global mesh is concerned, as there is no complete digital package still on the market and/or freeware:
Pilot's FS Global 2010 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/267647507503
Pilot's FS Global 2008 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/178285552147
Pilot's FS Global Special Edition circa 2005 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/188841055686
or the more antiquated MyWorld Complete by FSQuality / Burkhard Renk https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325260073293

Which is why I'm still using SimV. :wavey:

It isn't perfect or photo-grade but I got used to using these BGL's back in the FS2002 days and they still do what I want.
Slightly better city details, much better small-town and roads representation than Stock, and pretty painless to install.

Just look up the file you'll need then right-click on that file and use "Save As".

To be honest, I've never been that impressed with "photo scenery". Its great if you're flying VOR in a small area, afer that it becomes very limiting.

"the mesh i use is rhumbaflappy's LOD8 and LOD7 CFS2 mesh in our own library, its for CFS2 but works perfect in FS9"

Many thanks Ian, never too old to learn. And the other LOD's, do they also work in FS9?

hertzie.
