F4U-1 or F4U-1A

The Black Sheep flew the Corsair from its introduction to its retirement from the line after Korea. That said, i would imagine that they put their hands on every model built at some point, from the -1 to the -4C and possibly even the F2G.
 
Did you try doing a Google search? All the information I saw there points to the F4U-1A. This quote would seem to point to the "A" as well:

"The F4U-1 was the first production type. It started rolling off the assembly lines in September 1942. The production had some changes made to the canopy for better vision to the rear, though this would continue to be a problem until the advent of the "bulged" canopy introduced in the F4U-1A. The two Colt-Browning .50s mounted in the nose of the prototype were removed and all six machine guns were mounted in the wings outside the propeller arc which eliminated the need for synchronization. This Corsair also featured the Pratt-Whitney R-2800-8 engine. "
 
VMF-214 converted to the F4U-1 in June '43. Following disbandment in August it was reformed under Major G Boyington in September, again equipped with the F4U-1.

(Note: The first F4U-1a was the 950th model made by Vought, which came off the production lines on 9 August. VF-17 was the first unit to be equipped with them, receiving 36 F4U-1a's on 20 August, 1943.)

VMF-214 started receiving the F4U-1a as replacement aircraft from 2 December onwards. By the time it completed it's tour in January 1944 is still retained a 11 F4U-1's, the balance beign F4U-1a's.
 
My second ? is can anyone make a birdcage coursair lets say using the stock F4U1A and convert it to a birdcage F4U1 and paint it gray which was used by the Marines?

If ya don't want to pay for the donationware plane I redid Gramhams (VB) -1 in gmax. If I'm rememberin right, it's here at the OH. It should be the same as the 1% bird too.

If memory serves, ...I couldn't afford the FR appetite of the FSDS version, ...so I probably just walked away from it.

Will revisit the 1% GMax version...

I searched the d/loads section for both, and neither are there. Anyone know where they can be found?
 
Search at Simviation and Netwings for F4U-1....that's where all CFS2 stuff has migrated over the years, if not here at the OH.

Probably nothing...

I just happen to be comprised of large percentages of the constituents "lazy", ..and "spoiled". (60/40)

All my ACM stuff (.cfg/.dp/.air) is tuned for the DB-1A/C/D, ...and I have done "taps" on the 3D panel so many times over the years that I see it in my sleep.

Course, ...the 1% bird comes w/ a spreadsheet...

I did some testing on the F4U and found that the blowout on the main gear is wrong.I didn`t go over 300kts in the dive but it damaged the main gear.Thew damage point in the real I think is around 320KTS.:typing:

The above info matches the two books I've read about both VF-17, written by the CO Tommy Blackburn, and VMF-214 story.

The Jolly Rogers had a huge part in ironing out the F4U-1 teething problems, which were several.

A part from the birdcage Corsair bad forward visibility, which led the US Navy to judge it unfit for carrier ops, Blackburn lists the F4U-1 main problems being the hydraulically actuated cowl flaps, which leaked oil so badly to coat the windshield with it, gasoline leaks from the main tank located between the engine, and the cockpit, with vapours invading the cockpit, and voltage regulator faults which led to exploding batteries. All of it coupled with a nasty tendency to left wing stalls at low speeds, which Blackburn describes as very sudden, with not advance warning, therefore very dangerous.

Overall, the pilots who flew the birdcage Corsair version had truly their hands full of it.
