Kelti and other Italian members, please reply...

Kelti lives pretty far up north, near Milan, so hopefully he's not in the destruction zone. But it would be nice if our Italian forum members would check in and let us know they're OK.

The quake was around Aquila, NE of Roma, but at that magnitude it probably rattled a few windows a long way away. Stefano, I hope that your family and friends are safe and that the emergency services act swiftly and decisively.

Michael

Thank you, friends!

Thank you very much for your concerns, I am deeply moved!

Fortunately I live 500 km, roughly 350mi, North of L'Aquila and this area was not affected by the quake. All of my family members and friends are safe and sound.

But it was felt in Romagna, in the Ravenna-Rimini area, which is a mere 150km East of here.

It struck at 3 a.m., I was sleeping and I felt nothing, but I guess someone, who was up at that time, did feel something.

A couple of months ago an earthquake struk in the early evening only 20km East of here and, boy, did I feel that one! To the luck of all the people living in this area it was very deep, so it did not cause a lot of shaking, no houses were destroyed and, thank to the Lord, we hadn't any casualty or wounded people. Just an elderly person who died of a stroke caused by panic.

L'Aquila is a different story. The casualty count, as of last night, was around 150 killed with an enormous number of wounded. This was undoubtedly caused by the vicious time of the night it struck. At 3 a.m. everybody was in bed sleeping, practically trapped in by their own sleep.
Sadly, the count is not definitive and it's supposed to go up.

When such disasters happen in the heart of the night, it's inevitable that many people, who could somehow react if they were awake, are caught by surprise and loose their lives.

My condolences and my prayers go to the victims and their families. Unfortunately, natural disasters are part of life, every so often news reports are filled with all kinds of horrors from some part of the world caused by floods, earthquakes, fires, storms, volcanic eruptions and so on.

It's nature's way, yet it's extremely hard to accept it.

A quick update of the erthquake area.

Another magnitudo 5.7 quake, the same strength of the one which struck Monday morning, hit tonight L'Aquila at 7:45 pm local time.

Apparently, there are new victims added to the already increased casualty count since yesterday which reached 250, with 1,000 wounded and more than 100 still missing. The news reported tonight that at least 10,000 people are homeless and lost everything they had.

Entire country towns in the region have been turned into ghost towns, since 100% of the buildings are so damaged that pose a serious threat being even around them.

Among the casualties also rescue squad members and firefighters, caught by sudden collapses of damaged buildings they were inspecting, digging rubble while searching for survivors.

A journalist made a comment that L'Aquila looks like a WWII city saturated with bombs....

Everything OK at La Spezia. Too north to feel anything, not like some Roman friends who have told me they felt their bed to tremble. :wiggle:

Hi Friends,
I'm Italian, but I live in Greece, I know what means "earthquake", Greece is a country that suffered in the past by many and strong earthquakes.
Unfortunately a young Greek student also is in the death list.

Disaster Relief?

Hi guys,
does anyone know if there are any Disaster Relief funds set up to assist people hurt or displaced by this quake?

Sadly one can't help the dead, but the living are a different story.

Gavin

It's painfull for Mankind

Beyond the people, the main reason to sorrow, L'Aquila is a historic place, a fine medieval and Renassaince city. We must remember John Donne:
"the bells toll for thee"! For each one dead and for the city I became diminushed.

Yes, even though people come first, I shudder to think of what has become of the church of Santa Maria. It is (was?) such an important Romanesque church. It will be a long road back for the people of L'Aquila.

It sure will be, Michael.

Apparently there's no end in sight yet, as two more powerful aftershocks last night struck L'Aquila. Buildings already seriouly damaged by Monday morning shaker collapsed, while survivors can't take anymore this constant state of terror.

To make the matter even worse, the weather report for this Saturday and Easter Sunday calls for heavy rains all over Italy.
