Since updates installed .net 3.5 I have had issues with fsx crashing all over the place. Sometimes I can fly between 5-20 minutes but it ends up locking up, goes black and the vista circle starts going right before it dumps the game.

I don't know if it's the .net that did it or what the cause is.

If the hotfix is removable in the control panel, I would uninstall it, run a registry cleaner, defrag, and try FSX again. If it makes a difference, then I would try a fresh install of the 3.5 hotfix. I hope you solve your problem.

I would get lock ups and an occasional reboots before I installed 3.5, and I still do, so it's probabaly not 3.5, but then I push my graphic settings beyond all reason anyway so I'm always on the "edge". Most of my issues come with changing views, especially zooming in or out or panning, or trying to make changes after I've started a flight by using the ALT toolbar or going to windowed mode ALT+ENT(say changing fps locks or mesh detail levels on the fly) pretty much invites a catastrophic failure in my particular setup. I've had trouble free flights of 4 to 5 hours non-stop to go with freezing/lockups of the graphics, sound, mouse, and keyboard, after just a few minutes necessitating hitting "Reset".

In the almost 9 months since I've had this current FSX only box (including 2 reinstalls of Vista64 and FSX/Accel) I have never been able to nail down a cause. I really don't believe it's hardware, I've monitored and tested about everything hardware related to death. I think it's all software in combination: Vista + FSX + Nvidia drivers = ____________(you fill in the blank). When the failures occur error reporting programs are locked up too and fail to record anything that helps me. And I've run FSX in widowed mode with Task Mgr., it's Resource Monitor, and CPUID to monitor CPU and GPU temps all running at once and have never been able to identify a culprit when the freeze occurs.

When FSX is running trouble free at close to maxed out settings with all the usual addons it's an awesome experience, the other times it's, well... not. I guess it just goes with the territory. But there's always another tweak waiting just around the corner, LOL

yeah mine is the sort of the same way as Flight01's situation. I have run all kinds of tests on the memory, I've done temp checks while the game is running, ect. Heck I've had a fan on the side of my case the size of a box fan. The crazy thing is the only software that I have issues with is fsx. I can run that new game deadspace at max almost with no problems, and the wife and I play WoW together and I run that at max settings without problems as well.

The problem really got bad when I installed REX. However I tried to uninstall it and still had the problem so I'm not that was the problem and sent me back to square one. It was like when the sim used real updated weather and tried to load it. However now it just does it at any time.

I don't know if this will help figure it out or not but... I just tried a flight when things turned down as well and the same thing happened. Just a few minutes after takeoff the game crashed with:

A fatal error has occurred:

Then just asks if the game should restart

In my set up running at lower settings does not improve smoothness, actually tends to make it worse most cases. When it wants to run you can abuse it all you like and it won't be phased. When it doesn't want to run nothing you do will help.

Addons can have a significant impact especially as you change settings a lot when their first installed. Installing any addon may make changes to other areas in the program or possibly even to the system your not aware of. Uninstalling may remove the programs files but those other areas that were affected by the install may not get set back the way they were. At least that's a suspicion I have.

If I uninstall the sim is there anything that I need to know about that I might not be aware of that I should manually delete? I thought I knew what I was doing but after all this I'm not so sure of that now. lol :kilroy:

Back on 11/07/08 I posted a paraphrase of bulletin from MS on how to do this, it's in the SOH Acceleration Forum.

A thought on the addons installed, you may want to use Add/Remove to uninstall them all first and hope that the registry is okay, (as I understand it, just because you uninstall a program doesn't mean the registry entries are correctly deleted (or changed back to what they were if changed by an addon installation) as well, and that can cause a heap of problems), and any associated backup folders are replaced and there's no left over files hanging around. I've been told it's best to always use the programs uninstaller applet (if it has one) or Add/Remove in Control Panel, don't just delete folders - there's more of them than you can imagine and there in lots of places other than C:\Programs, or whatever. Then hunt down and delete any remaining folders and hope the registry is back to what it should be. The last thing you'll do is actually uninstall FSX.

Personally, as I use the one PC only for FSX, I find it's easier to reformat and reinstall Windows when I get to that point, update the OS and drivers and start fresh, that way I'm not chasing down left over mistakes I previously made on top of the new mistakes I know I'm going to make. But that's just me.

If I were you I'd read some of the other posts here at SOH about reinstalling and options (like running a repair), I'm no expert. And before doing a reinstall I would give yourself more time to try other remedies before putting yourself through the dance. There's a wealth of info up under Tweaks, Guides, and the Acceleration Forums.

There is a freeware program available called Revo Uninstaller..It uses the application's uninstaller, then hunts down all the leftover files and registry entries which you can then delete.

well I thought I would give me one for shot before uninstalling it and reloading fsx. Funny thing is I left the time at the default state and dang if it didn't crash at all... I flew for over an hour without one hicup at all... 98% of the sliders are fully to the right and fraps never moved from 25fps. So it hit me that I usually like to start a flight at dawn right as the sun is coming up. So I went back to that time and pow right in the kisser if it didn't crash.

So I have ground environment in my system, does that say to you guru's that something is up with the dark morning tiles? Should I reinstall that instead of fsx?

From what I've seen,
.NET works best if you sequentially install all versions from 1.0 on up....(i.e., skip over the "all included" updates)

I'd be surprised if it was anything to do with GEX but with FSX and any addon you can never be sure. I'll try the time aspect myself today, usually dawn and dusk means fewer shadows for the overall system to deal with, but then there are other lights turning on/off.:isadizzy:
