To all,

One of the Battle of Europe missions I'm working on is one of the Schweinfurt raids, specifically 17 August, 1943. I am using Ettico's Schweinfurt EuroTarget for the mission.

I can either make this an escort mission using P-47 Thunderbolts, in which you will rendezvous the Flying Fortresses on the way home...

-OR-

I can do a raid where you FLY the B-17, and strike the ball-bearing plant directly. In this way I can simulate escorts which bring you part-way to the target and then pick you back up on the way home.

I'm only doing one or the other, not both.

My decision will rest on the responses to this thread. :wiggle:

By the way...

Here's a way I came up with to illustrate the lack of range the P-47 had, and why it could not escort the B-17s to Schweinfurt. The area marker is the approximate range of the P-47, and I labeled Schweinfurt on the bottom right of the screen. The P-47s only had enough fuel with a 75-gallon drop tank to make it about to Cologne before having to turn back.

I thought it was cool enough to post, anyway...:cool:
 
My 2 cents worth:

Why not do both missions?

Talon has done this in his "Carrier War" campaign. (same mission - different planes)
Gives a nice perspective on both angles of the mission (bomber & escort).

You know how I am about looking through a bombsite ... however, having said that, I'd go with ANY mission. (Though, since I don't have to do any of the work) .... I like the "why not do both" option. Whatever ... a good mission ... well, it's like saying ... "A woman is a woman .... but a good cigar is a smoke!" (Whatever the hell that means ... haven't really figured it out since I first heard it in 1964!):isadizzy:

Then I suggest they learn mission builder and get to work! I can be gracious and flexible to a point, but I don't walk around with a "kick me" sign on my back, either. :icon_lol:

May I offer a European point of view?

Asking for too much isn't always cool. Patricularly when what's offered is generously given for free.

I was raised on: "Choose one or the other, you can't have both because only the arrogants want to have everything in life".

Being humble is not a weakness, it actually takes a stronger will.

I pretty much have the bomber run finished except for the .dyn file, making the escort version isn't that hard...
 
The bomber version is finished. Here is the mission description...

"summary_string"=Attention, airmen! Our orders are to strike the ball bearing plant at Schweinfurt, deep within the Third Reich. This will put us well beyond the range of escorting fighters, who will only be able to provide partial escort. We'll have to defend ourselves over the target area. Just try to make it home alive!
"objective_string"=The raids on the Schweinfurt-Regnesburg area of Germany in August and October of 1943 proved to be very costly for the 8th Air Force. 60 bombers were lost on the initial August raid, as well as the scores of B-17s damaged beyond repair. On the next raid in October, the USAAF lost 77 bombers, and deep penetration raids were suspended until escort fighters could be found that had the range needed to stay with the bombers to the target and back.
"intelligence_string"=Your escort will meet you over the Dutch coast, but they only have the range to escort you to the Rhine River. Beyond that, you'll have to fend for yourself over the target area, then make your way back to Bonn, where escorts will meet you once again and bring you home. Good luck!
