Anyone here ever done a HHH run?

That stands for Hash House Harriers. NOT in any way connected to, or has ANYTHING to do with drugs. There are HHH groups all over the world, literally. The closest HHH to me is, I think, Chattanooga. But they haven't had a run in a while. Huntsville, AL has one, and I contacted them for a schedule.

I first became aware of them when living on Guam for a year. A real fun bunch to party with, and get some excercise in the process!

That sounds pretty crazy. I looked the website over and couldn't find out hwo they got their name.

What are the runs like? Do you actually have to chase people?

This might explain the history:

As for what the runs are like, they are truly a crazy experience! Mind you, the last time I ran one was in 1996, at Iwakuni, Japan. But it goes like this. Several people get together, and one is designated as the "Hare". The rest of the group are known as "Hounds". Every run I've been on is about 5 miles. There wasn't a time limit per se. Some people walk most of it. The idea is to catch the "Hare", who leaves a trail you have to follow. Sometimes it is a false trail. Really gets interesting. And the terrain could be anything from swamps, hills, valleys, thickets....you name it. By the end of the run, it's not uncommon to have scrapes, bruises, etc... But at the end is a party. And I mean PARTY. They call it the Circle. One thing I do need to add, however, is that some (most) of the songs they sing......part of the tradition.....are obscene to say the least. It is just plain fun. If you get a chance, and there is a local HHH group, you should check it out.

I have contacted the HHH groups in Asheville and Nashville. I plan to join them for a run, hopefully soon. Pictures to be posted, eventually. It might be August before I can do any runs, but it's gonna happen.

I couldnt do the Run
but i like the idea of drinking afterwards:icon_lol:

I couldn't complete a 5 mile run right now. But I hope to in a few weeks.

As for the drinking, the HHH groups always have a designated driver to take folks home.

I'd hope so. A bunch of men wearing bunny ears stumbling drunk down the sidewalk would be easy pickins for the local cops. :icon_lol:

Yes, you can say that. Nowadays (in most places) the cops are definitely on the lookout for DWIs. And rightfully so. That's whats great about these groups, is they make sure you aren't driving drunk. Just a lot of fun, and exercise along the way too.

I posted today on a HHH forum for the Nashville area. Hard to believe, but one of their "hares" emailed me. He was one of the HHH members from the time I was on Guam.

Small world.

Oh? You mean you don't have to run home from the run?

Right now in the shape I'm in I probably coudln't handle too much of either sport.

Not in any of the runs I have participated in. Besides, when the drinking/celebrations are done around the fire (usually a small bonfire), most are in no shape to drive.

Trans, I can guarantee you this. You will have a great time. Jogging/running (to me at least) is boring. Very boring. But a HHH run is something different. It's just so much fun.

It's a great way for group fun. We do not have a club in Danville, but the Danville Running & Fitness Club include a Hash Run each year. The fun thing is, it's really not like a run, where the fastest wins, the hare/s go out together and mark the trail and the hounds chase together. You stop on occasion to investigate the trail marks, split up and howl when you find a positive. Out trails are usually around 5K (3.1 miles) in length, but have gone as high as 5 miles. It's fun because everyone stays together as a group while running and do not worry about competing.

And at the end is frosty :icon29: and good humor. Remember to leave your problems at the back door, no sympathy here, only fools. :ernae:

That is EXACTLY how a HHH "run" goes. You described it perfectly. THANKS! NC

i used to ride with a couple who were hashers. the stories they told sounded like alot of fun. i seem to remember them telling of more drinking than what is mentioned here though.

There is most definitely a lot of drinking. But (at least from what I have experienced) there isn't any pressure to do so. In fact, there's always non-alcoholic drinks available. I can't (nor want) to put down beer like I did back then. The run itself is a blast, going through all types of terrain with other folks. Quite a challenge too, paying attention to the trail markers left by the hares.
