The Grumman J2F Duck first flight

It takes me back to 1939 - 1941 when I was a hanger rat at USCG base at Winter Island, Salem Massachusetts. They had five Ducks. I got my love for airplanes from those days.

They were painted high gloss silver and when the war broke out they were flat gray on the top, light gray on the bottom. I wasn't allowed on the base after that. Our house was right on the water and I could see the Coast Guard Base from there The planes would take off in my "back yard".

Outstanding - Another fun aircraft to add to my "list".....:applause:

(Now if I can just stop buying photography stuff):kilroy:

keep up the good work, icarus - as soon as I get ahead again I'll be visiting your store

post scriptum...i have just asked to the modeller to add a version with murphy pilot.

Far out, Icarus ! :ernae:
Couldn't find a 3-view scale drawing, this'll have to do :

Model looks great but watch out with those rivets. You don't want it to look like an Aurora plastic model from the 50's ! :d

Hardly any riveting to see on the real thing :

Bumpmapping sure is a nice FSX feature but if overdone it can ruin an otherwise great looking model. Sorry for the lecture...

Great photos of the Salem hangar! Gonna be part of the package too, right !? ( just kidding, although..... :mixedsmi: )

That hanger view shows the Hall Flying Boat. She had two pusher props and had a peculiar, loud sound. Only goes to prove that the sounds from an airplane are one third propeller, one third aerodynamics and one third the engine.
Here's a picture of a pre-war J2F. The one I remember was VT-140 and had "Winter Island" under the U.S. Coast Guard.

if i m able to reproduce yes...about rivets modifying rivets are not visible...so i m sorry but i will not change..i can make skins in two ways with bump mapping and without so all are satisfied. in the skins you show rivets are near to be invisible in some other they are. modify the rivets it's really problematic with material i have and do not looks good..if you read in our forum i just answered a week ago to this.

the murphy pilot in some scenes didn't have the hat so it will be...if i have to ask also the hat will take much time and many people want it fastly. seems the skin of murphy pilot is the same from last skin i did...i am correct?....change only the uncovered engine part that we have on another model.

i will replace but without antenna

The RDF antenna was the prime reason they could fly outside of land fall. However, as I can remember it, the loop was replaced with a black tear drop antenna. But without it, it would be limited. This was in the day before Loran or any other type of direction finder. It kind of went with the aircraft.

k i will try to ask to the modeller the antenna...not easy he is working to the storch now.

The PBMs came at the end of the war. I saw one trying to make a JATO take off and only one side lit. It crashed in the water and there were two men killed. It was not a popular aircraft. It was called the Ronson because of it's aptitude to catch on fire.

NO IS THE PJ-1 The title said A 1937 photo of a General PJ-1 flying boat inside the CGAS Salem hangar.

Surely lots of rivets on that Duck's skin but they are VERY small and only really show from up close :

For your small rivets you might like to try this: create a vertical row of dark rivets of only one pixel, copy and paste as many rows needed. Turn one row 90 deg. to create a horizontal row and copy and paste as many rows needed. You'll now have a layer of the complete rivets pattern in dark color. Copy the rivets layer and paste as new layer which you then brighten up.

If you want rivets laying upon the skin place the light colored rivets layer one pixel *above* the dark colored layer. If you want the rivets to look more flush to the skin, indented even, place the light colored layer one pixel *beneath* the dark colored layer. Will look like this :

Play with the transparency slider of both layers to get best result. Mind you, this is no bumpmapping, pure handwork. ( i think repainters will love you for it. :) )

the murphy pilot in some scenes didn't have the hat so it will be...if i have to ask also the hat will take much time and many people want it fastly.

The hat is of course the most significant item to identify Murphy as the pilot of your Duck model. If you like i'll be happy to create that hat for you. Gmax or 3dsMax.

You can have a reasonably good look at Murphy's Duck with the movie link i added earlier. On both sides it reads 'RN/MS MOUNT KYLE'

The shade of blue you already have on one of your Ducks might well suffice, yes. Check out the roundels in the movie clip.

Louie : Can you fly !???

Murphy : Who do you think kept this flying lavatory together ??...

Would be great to hear that before engine start sound, wouldn't it...:bump:
