New updated / F-102 Release screen shots

Ron was kind enough to send me a new updated F-102 and the panel is nuthin but sweet. I post these along with some others later one....let him know what you think.....but don't cut him a new a-hole either.
 
You guys also gotta let me slide on the screen shots...mine don't look as nice as some of the ones you aces post.

I managed to land it this time without running out of runway! :d

...er... but I did turn off the engine on very short final to make it easier. :engel016:

(I hasten to add that this is entirely pilot error, not flight model issues. I am more than happy to admit to being a pretty lousy fast jet jockey.)

This one is looking very nice indeed. :applause:
 
Ian, how is the view from the cockpit during approach? With the Alphasim F-106 the nose is up so high I can’t see the runway and have to fly a curved approach it I want to land at anything like the proper speed.
 
I am so very definitely the wrong person to ask that... ;)

Certainly at the speeds I have been flying approaches at, I have had no problem viewing the runway other than the canopy frame, which some twerp decided to put right where the runway should be on a zero wind final approach. :wiggle:

Sorry but I'm not very familiar with the names of the people here, so I have to ask: Who is Ron, and does he make payware or freeware addons ?

As far as landing the balalaika shaped airplane goes, the F-106 technique I use is to move the seat back, up, and to the left (just like landing the Vought F4U Hog!) In the pics, I’m about to touchdown at 160-ish knots. The Alphasim book says 145, so I was a little fast, but still, since I only slowed to 160 late in the approach, by the time I was over the runway, I can see the left and right edges out the side window, even if I can’t see over the nose. Of more concern to me on final is the canopy frame and the radar equipment sitting right in front of me. Moving the eye-point to the left helps that situation a lot. Also, I only had 30% gas on board…

It’s interesting to compare the 102 to the 106, especially in the cockpit. The 102 looks more like a WW-II fighter. The 106 was evidently quite different, despite the similarity on the outside. Good stuff!

With a proper approach profile you can not see the runway unless you change your head position or use TrakIR but why would you need to? Thats what ILS is made for :)

These 3 shots illustrate your view flying a proper profile.

1) On the glide slope about 2mi out. Speed 185kts & slowing.
2) Same shot with my head craned.
3) End result, down the centerline & touchdown at 160kts. I dont know what the "book" speed is but 160kts feels right.

They did a great job on the FM on this bird! Obviously I have never flown a 102 but this handles like I think one should. Agile & quick in the roll but will bite you if you yank it around. Great fun to fly!
 
There was a member here who was an F-106 pilot, and there was a thread about that plane, and the visibility on landing, back before the “Great SOH Crash.” Apparently the canopy is so small, that with the helmet on, there really is no room to move your head sideways enough to see around that big post in the center of the window, like some of us have been doing. Furthermore, there is a lot more “stuff” piled up in front of the pilot than simply the radar display shown in these screenshots of the F-102 and F-106 VCs, making landing even more “interesting.” That’s amazing! I guess it’s not as bad as that weird variant of the F-100 (or was it an F-84?) that had no fwd visibility whatsoever – the pilot was provided with a freeken periscope to land with!! :eek:
 
Hi,

Been working on the one below the last few days. It saw service with the Wash ANG so that's why the Ace of Spades insignia is still on the intake.
I really like this aircraft.
