Windows XP to Windows 7: It's Going to Be a Bumpy Ride

The way I see it, or at least from what I gather from watching them and dealing with them, MS do not care about their customers. I feel sorry both for them and for those that they abandon. They need to realise that the people are very intelligent, not cattle. You do not 'heard' (cattle term, I think the spelling is wrong) today's high technology oriented people.

Perhaps this will be a good thing and new forms of OS will come out that can run windows programs on them.

In the past I have never bought an upgrade package of an O.S.

When I changed O.S.s I bought brand new full packages and did a wipe and a fresh install each time.

They're getting to be just like the government Bill... don't care about the little guy at all... just themselves and how much they can squeeze out of them. Hopefully Mac, Linux and the others will finally get Windows software to run on their OSes.

I don't upgrade either Snuffy, but there are a lot out there that do. Actually it's the same as doing a reformat. It's just that the Upgrade is a bit less expensive and they figure they won't have to do the reformat bit. Not so. LOL Fresh new OS and install is the best way to go IMHO too.

It's never wise to install one OS over another, no matter who made it.

I don't believe any of it till I see it for myself. I guess it was like when Vista came out. I brought the update and found out Vista update was really the full version of Vista. They also said you had to have XP,Windows2000 or 98 to do a install.Only to find out that all ya had to do was do a full format and install the OS twice and all went well. So before we burn our Bacon let's wait and really see what is about to come.

From everything I have read MS has been quite upfront that an upgrade install would only work from Vista, XP would require a clean install.

It's not costing me any money to do it that way... It's the better way... And most folks who wouldn't be comfortable doing a clean install won't upgrade anyway.

I don't see a problem.

I agree that installing a new OS, or any upgraded program, on top of an existing install of an older OS/program is bad practice. Heck, how many times has it been stated on this site alone that the best way to do a video driver update is to uninstall the old drivers, use a driver sweeper to remove any left over fragments of the old drivers, then install the new drivers.

I would have no problems installing Win 7 as a totally new OS onto a formatted HD. There are those who are computer users who do not have the computer know how to do this, but those are the people that Geek Squad is in business to provide services to....although I have not spoken to a Geek Squad person who seemed to really know his stuff...I have gotten better help simply by asking questions here on SOH.

I purchased an upgrade once, from Win 95 to Win 98. It didn't work exactly right and I ended up buying the full version of 98. I haven't tried an upgrade OS since.

In the past I've alway gone with the update version moving from one version to the next after I found out years ago, that the updates are the same as full ones.

The only difference that I've ever found is that the upgrades add the verification step looking for an older version. That's just a matter of sticking an old disk in for a second. The only goofy one I remember was that W95 wanted you to stick in all 6 of the W3.1 floppies in, one after the other. :)

In any event I would never dump a new version on top of the old. All OS changes for me are done on blasted clean HDs. When I made this jump from XP into the W7 great unknown, I still did a clean install.

So far I've found the jump from Xp to W7 to be my favorite Windows upgrade so far.

What I will do differently for the first time since W3.1 is to buy the full version as soon as it's available. I'd like to be able to sell off this XP system, as is complete with OS and all it's software. A bit of a fresh start...

If Windows 7 is anything like the RC1, I'm not overly impressed. It still has a lot of the nanny junk. And, so far you can't add scenery to FSX except by dumping it all in the addon scenery directory...at least I haven't gotten it to work. I just built a new system (old one died) and originally planned on just Windows 7, but after a few OS roadblocks I decided to run XP on one hard drive and Windows 7 on another. Frankly, I haven't had the urge to run the Windows 7 partition after installing it. Windows 7 seems to be just Vista with a face lift.

The W7 I'm using is the RC Build7100.

I thought there was an issue loading custom scenery folders into FSX at first also. By accident I figured out that it requires one extra right click of the mouse in the Scenery Library window to make the scenery stick.

When adding a scenery area to a custom folder just go through all of the "Add Area" steps as before. Then when you choose the area that you want to add make sure you advance the GUI window until the actual folder called "scenery" is showing in the window. At that point right click anywhere in the window and the scenery will be added.

I've put off building a new rig simply because of Vista. With Win 7 on the horizon, I'll make my move about 6 months after it's been released (new install, of course).
