Rhumba"s Mesh Is Up

Hi all.

There is a better way to get background images:

http://www.ptsim.com/sbuilder/gmaps.htm

If you use firefox, then the oversized images can be captured by a firefox addon like fireshot ( free version ).

Luis' website gives an image of up to 3200 x 2400.

The SRTM elevation data is trimmed by Landsat7 images, so the land-water placement should be OK.

Very nice Dick. Thanks.

I don't suppose that these rectangular images and their rectangular corner coords will work in G2K? Or will we still need to place these images as a new layer over a square image for which the square corner coords are already known?

I guess what I'm asking is will g2K work with a rectangular image?

Fireshot is a very cool little screen capture utility! Actually, I already had it but had never used it. It was disabled. When I tried to use it my "trial period" had expired. So, I uninstalled it and downloaded/installed it again and was back in business.

BTW I didn't do it,but a dialogue box opens up asking if you want to integrate it with IE.

Cheers,
Chris

Rectangular images work fine with G2K.
Indeed they do! Don't know why I was laboring under that delusion- must be left over from my days making nothing but texpolys.

Here is a screenie of the Anggi lakes, Lake Gita and Lake Gigi, situated at 6000' in the Arfak mountains 20 miles NW of Ransiki-Moemi. Made them with a rectangular background map.

Very cool.

Thanks Dick.

Hi all.

A new DEM source has been released. The demand is so high, it has locked up the servers. In a joint project between Japan and NASA, ASTER elevation data for the entire earth ( N83* to S83* ) has been created. It is 30 meter data suitable for LOD10.

I don't know if it has been error adjusted, cleaned, waterbodies flattened...

Within a month, we should be seeing some BGLs created from this source, so we'll see then how reliable it is.

The Aster set also has visual bands, but I don't think that set has been released to the public.

Nice! Can't wait to see what comes out of this.

P.S. rhumbaflappy, your mesh is incredible. I have never seen anything like it. It really helps cfs2 come alive. Nice work!
Now I'm wondering how to get it in fs2004?

Hi all.

The GDems from ASTER data are way too raw for usage as mesh. They would need a lot of work to fix. The sea level flattening is not very good, and they haven't removed all the clouds, so those areas would have to be identified and voided.

Definitely research grade.

There is an indication the data will be further processed, so we should probably wait for version 2.

Thanks for the update Rhumba. I must confess that I am enjoying this current set of yours just fine. It really is spectacular. The little area that I am playing with is right now is awesome! The flat areas for those two 6000' lakes was just sitting there waiting for water. Very nice.

Here is what I am currently using as my desktop wall paper:

As far as FS2000 or FS2004 or FSX... the mesh works fine in all of them. Just add them as any scenery set would be added. But in many areas, the default mesh will override the LOD7 and sometimes the LOD8. In that case, default BGLs can be deactivated simply by changing their .bgl extention to .old... that way they can be reactivated as desired if the original BGLs look better to you.

I accidentally deleted my FSX mesh ( yes, I often do dumb things ). I now use my LOD7 in FSX, and it looks as good to me as the originals! All the Flight Simulator versions will interpolate the mesh to higher LODs if they are not present... but FSX does this to a greater degree than previous versions.

I haven't read of any spikes and holes from the LOD7s yet, but I'm sure they are in there. If and when we find them, we can apply Area16n flattens, or remake the mesh with the patches in place.

I was looking at some of the beaches at Guadalcanal and I saw very little beach ,nothing like CFS2.Yes there are some islands that had white sandy beaches but most didn`t.Most were mud flats or black sand or what we would find around here which is a dark brown to a very light tan color.Thies are not very wide accept for the man made beaches or the outer banks of NC.In otherwords it ins`t worth going to alot of troblr to put it in all of the PTO.I would say if anything do what MR is doing and put it in only where it is needed. This is what I am talking about.

Thanks Rami

Rami, just wanted to say thanks for your guide to installing all of those meshes and masks. I was having a heck of a time- getting lots of weird error messages and stuff. Finally started from scratch using your guide. Everything is functioning fine now.

Once again, thanks.

DEM8_18.zip still corrupt!

Is there any way of getting this file? I try to download it and it just will not work. Looks like this file is the only on of the 22 that will not dl.

Been having fun with Rhumba's mesh/masks. I even went so far as to do a second install of CFS2. The second version I am keeping as my "stock" version in that it uses the stock mesh/masks. The airfields I built for PNG, Solomons and most of Micronesia all work just fine with the stock mesh- and masks, too- even though in many cases I did use G2K to redo the shorelines. But the stock mesh and masks are adequate for those airfields.

The other version of CFS2 will be reserved for Airfields that go with Rhumba's new mesh/masks. Those will include PI, Formosa, Japan and DEI. Started with DEI.

The original G2k versions of Wakde, Lolobata, Hate-Tabako, and Noemfoor all work fine with the new mesh and masks. However everything else needs minor to severe tweaking. So far the only old ones that I have totally reworked to fit Rhumba's mesh/masks are Biak Island (Soridor, Mokmer and Borokoe)and Monakwari. Otherwise I have been doing nothing but making brand new airfields- airfields that I always wanted to make but never did because the stock mesh and mask for the areas in question was so unsightly.

Anyhow the new fields I have made are: Babo, Fak-Fak, Jeffman Is, Moemi, Ransiki, Nabire, Utarom-Kaimana.

I'll see if I can get a few screenies posted.

BTW I have not run into any major problems with Rhumba's mesh/masks. The only problem I can think of is that for some reason the land class assignments seem to be a bit spotty- but easily fixed.

Thanks Rhumba!

PS: Still can't post images- I can't anyway. I'll post some at my web site when I get a chance.

In a way its like having a blank canvas...not having to work around some of those strange artifacts that came with the original CFS2 roads and rivers.
Don't forget those pics. :d

MaskRider, these new fields in Nieuw Guinea are awesome, THANKS. I am now starting a complete new MRTO so that they eventually can be added.:ernae:

Hoeboy...

Nice MR! Covering the wide areas, as you did for this mesh, gives everything a much better look in relationship to the airstrips appearance and texturing. It all fits together in a more realistic way. The village areas are good look also. :icon29:

Thanks dvslats.

Yeah what I try to do is included just enough shoreline and LC mods to make the area look pleasing to the eye as far as the next major bend in the coast line in both directions.

I am still going the easy way and using just VTP1 polys from G2K for ground texturing. However, on the next field- Sagan Airfield about 50 miles or so west of Balo- I will get back to the texpoly method with a twist. I'll create an original 512X512 bmp and then divide it into 4 256sq bmps and use G2K's VTP1 poly with a "linked" texture method. That eliminates the need for any flattening of the area in order to have the ground texture show and it sits down in there so that CFS2's ground texturing shows on top of the custom texture.

Maybe get one done over the weekend.
