OT: So much for the preservation of history ...

It reminds me of the Witch Jail that used to exist in Salem, Mass. It was the sole existng vestige of the Witch trials. Everything they have now is fake. But in 1950, AT&T decided to build a building there and they destroyed it wthout even asking permission.
 
They are not building that Walmart on that memorial site. They said a cannonball shot away, that could be 200 yards or more. The more people they bring in (at Walmart) the more people will see that monument and know history.

It could be a good thing. I think that there are alot of bad feelings on Walmarts. If only they were still primarily American based on only selling products made in the USA. They really helped America back then. At least now, they have things people can afford to buy, and a super center employs a ton of people.


If they were going to build that Walmart on that actual site of the battlefield, that yes, that would be grim. But they arent doing this. It will be 'close by'.

In Virginia Beach any business buildings near the Court House complex are required to have a "colonial" appearance in keeping with the style of the Court House. There is a 7-11 that has an arch roof and brick facade and a street sign that looks more like what you'd see in front of an old pub or blacksmith shop. I know a Wally-World is a much larger structure, but it could still be built with a mid-1800's appearance that might fit in well with the historical theme of the area.

Thats pretty cool!

A colonial 7-11. I really need to drive through that area someday. My buddy I grew up with is from down there and he used to love to go to all the battle fields and check things out. There is a church there that a cannon ball hit in the wall and is still there today. Supposedly a British ship hit it from the Ptolemic river (however thats spelled).

Well I don't know. It might backfire on them. A forced juxtaposition of a noble thing with heart, and thing that is ignoble with no heart. They can dress it up all they want but my experience has been they sell crap and treat their employees and neighbors like cattle.
