Aero L-39 Albatros

Has anyone found anything bad about this plane lol?

Other than the usual FSX bugs I haven't found any issues with it.

That's a pity isn't it. We can't even post furious bugreports. This has to be the most 'mature' addonrelease I've seen so far in FSX-history. The things I find 'bad' are FSX-problems and are related to the plane model itself (L-39 restrictions and issues). The addon as such is pretty much as polished as can be.

Oh wait, the GPS display could be a bit sharper. :bump:

Yeah if we really wanted to get into it a custom bezel for the RXP GNS430 unit, like RealAir made for their Duke hehe

Yes, it completely eliminates the desire to fly anything else in your virtual hangar...

Not sure if you actually mean that or not, but since the 1.01 patch, the GPS is a whole lot sharper. I would like to see that GNS430W in there though... :monkies:

Really? I haven't applied the hotfix yet. I was only reading about multiplayer improvements by completely disabling the flares. Because I don't do multiplayer I thought the hotfix is not really for me because it disables features that have no negative effect in single player mode.

Maybe I'll extract the hotfix and only replace the gauge files (the GPS should be a panel/gauge thing) and leave the rest alone preserving my flares.

Well the lack of tundra tires and/or floats make bush flying a bit tough in the L-39. But other than that you're right. :icon_lol:

Gents,

This L-39 patch v1.1 with the NEW GPS; where might that be found?
(I don't see it in my SimMarket Account :kilroy:)

Thanks! :wavey:

Hahahaha floats... I can't even imagine. But to keep it realistic of course it would need to have differential braking "paddles" only, like a canoe, none of those little rudders. ;)

Oli, I would do that hotfix regardless of whether you fly in multiplayer or not. It seems that on very very rare occasions those flares can cause a CTD in singleplayer too if you fire enough of them off, though I haven't been able to get it to happen myself. I will hopefully have a permanent solution for them in several weeks when I release an update. I am also looking into Reality XP integration, but I don't have an answer on that yet, have some other issues to tackle first. And yup, the L-39 does have a few small issues, some of which I can fix, and some are purely hardcoded FSX limitations, but aside from the flares there have been no other showstoppers thankfully (whew...). :)

Cheers!

Hi James. The GPS fix was included with the hotfix 1.01 procedure that removes the flares. All it does is increase the resolution of the GPS display in the VC. Simmarket hasn't updated the plane yet I think, which I'll be calling them about today. I sent them an updated installer 3 days ago. FSpilotshop's installer is up to date.

Thanks Mr. Mike "Lotus" and Thank you Gents, as well! :wavey:

I think I got confused between users posting v1.10 vs. v1.01 in their posts; but I believe that I downloaded that one already. Thanks again. :wavey:

FYI: I checked again today (Aug. 28th '09); SimMarket hasn't updated users accounts with that info.

Thanks James. I got hold of Simmarket today, so their installer should be updated to v1.01 within 12 hours from now. If you want to do a re-download and reinstall you should be able to grab it from them tomorrow night.

Cheers,

It doesn't stop me from getting in and out of small airports though. It's fun practicing takeoffs and landings at SABA with it...:jump:

The lack of nosewheel steering is driving me mad though. I konw they say that L-39s don't have it, but it only exacerbates the problem when FSX simulates ground friction as way to strong. I've flown aircraft IRL with no nosewheel steering, and you change your methods a little bit and things swing right around. It's not so easy in FSX. I wish I could go fly an L-39 to see how it is.

I'm about to go all unrealistic and enable nosewheel steering. How do I do it?

If you want to enable nosewheel steering it's pretty easy to do, just one line to change. The differential braking though is pretty close to the real thing, and in some ways easier. On the real deal you squeeze the stick mounted brake handle to control total brake pressure and then distribute that pressure via the rudder pedals to each wheel brake. It's quite a strange thing to get used to, but it does get easier with practice. The trick is to keep your speed low, about the same as a fast walk, and use moderate brake pressure combined with a slight bump in throttle (75-80% N1) going into the turn, then use moderate opposite brake to straighten out at the end while retarding the throttle back to (65-70%). The really important part to being smooth with it is the brake pressure amount. Keeping the pressure light on each brake pedal is more effective than using a lot of pressure and fighting the drag with throttle. If you can manage the speed well and stay rolling at walking pace then it works out pretty smoothly. Using too much brake and grinding to a halt mid turn makes it a lot harder to get straightened out again. I think the hardest part about the physics of it is remembering that the nosewheel casters based on the rate of yaw and duration of the yaw, it's not an instant angle change like with nose wheel steering, so you have to plan your turn a couple of seconds ahead and start using differential brakes gently before you get to the actual turning point.

To activate nosewheel steering though simply change the following in the aircraft.cfg, in the [contact_points] section:

point.0= 1.000, 12.9, 0.000, -6.650, 1600.000, 0.000, 0.710, 180.000, 0.10, 3.50, 0.7, 4.200, 4.000, 0, 225, 224

Change the 180.00 in that line to 60.00

Thank you for your help!!

I wonder if there's a mod for L-39s that adds nosewheel steering. I'd be all over it if I bought one.

Hehe, yeah there is a mod of sorts, called the L-39MS/L-59, developed in the 1990s. :) It's heavier and not as agile as the C, and with not much more power, but has a single upward hinging canopy like a Tomcat, digital avionics with front and rear HUDs, better ejection seats, and yup, nose wheel steering. Mega pricey though to pick up one of the few that are available for private ownership. Not sure I like the look as much though, not as sleek as a C model, kinda chunky in the middle. :) It evolved into the L-159 Alca pretty quickly, so not very many were produced.

You forgot Aero L-139 Albatros 2000 with American engine Garrett TFE 731-4,HUD, modern avionics etc. before L-159 Alca.:bump:

Yup, good spotting, you're right I forgot that one. So many versions, oy.... C, V, ZO, ZA, MS, L59, L59E, L139, L159.... L-1000 <--future terminator version with 28 hardpoints. :)
