Mexico has issued a hurricane watch

August 30, 2009 10:33 PM<!-- #EndDate --> MDT Category 4 Hurricane Jimena is bearing down on Baja and is expected to make landfall in Baja California Sur sometime Tuesday. Current forecasts call for Jimena to make landfall near Todos Santos as an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 120kts. If this forecast holds it will be the most powerful hurricane to make landfall in Baja.

It's been fairly benign in the Atlantic so far this year but if Hurricane Jimena holds to predictions there could be a significant impact in Mexico.

While most of the hurricane coverage focuses on the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf states because of the greater population and easier access for the news crews, potential damage to not only resort-rich Cabo San Lucas but agriculture and the Grey Whale calving grounds on the west coast could extract quite a price. Some models from the NHIC suggest it's possible Jimena could increase to a Cat 5.

Coverage may not be extensive (CNN lost $$ and 'face' a couple of years ago when they rushed a crew to Cabo expecting a frontal attack on the resorts and the storm veered in the last hours. Sadly they also missed the damage and loss of life further north along the Sea of Cortes)

Yep, I have more than a passing interest in this one as we have a condo outside of Cabo. Naturally, we booked our flights (for late November) two days ago, which seems a long time away, but some damage takes months to repair as we know. We can change our plans but the people who live and work there are not so fortunate. Let's hope Jimena decides to be a nice lady...

That track takes it over the Gulf of Cortez now... before it was a threat to So. Cal... now it stays in warm waters. People in Arizona and El Centro area take note. Could be some pretty heavy rains. I will be in AZ this weekend for my father's funeral so hopefully not too bad.

All should be advised some sources are reporting CAT5. Extreme caution warranted. Good thing its impossible to get hurricanes up here in the Canadian Artic.

How does that work out? I though Americans couldn't own property in Mexico.

How much time do you spend down there? Do you go for entire seasons?

Luckily it has been loosing strength all day.

It is still a Cat 4 but has lost 20 mph.

Hopefully it will lose more strength over night.

They can and the process has been getting much easier (although since I'm not American I had to chuckle:icon_lol:) the process has been laid out many places - the realtors and developers want $$

It varies with the other facts of life, but currently a month or so before Christmas and then whenever afterward. Hopefully that will increase in the next year or so as we get rid of responsibilities here.

I haven't checked today, but it's likely that there will be some precip drawn off the Sea of Cortes as the storm moves north. However, as the leading edge of a Northern Hemisphere hurricane carries easterly winds, it could, as I see it, bring stronger winds off the desert before it brings rain to SoCal. Wind is not a friend of firefighters.

just looked at the noon update. The track seems to have moved a bit westward overnight into slightly cooler water which caused the strength to drop ( a bit). Motion is also up to 12 kts so the period of impact will be a tiny bit less. The westward shift looks like it will reduce ( a bit) the impact of wind on the Cabo area - the peak winds only extend out about 45 nm from the center. Central pressure is up a bit to 948mB (about 28.05 ") from 940mB last night reflecting the drop in winds

Still, I'm glad I'm not there. Two of the public webcams appear to be offline but this one seems to still be in operation... http://www.allaboutcabo.com/cabocam.htm

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that right in the path of Jimena is the town of Todos Santos. A nice little "artsy" place with some great restaurants, quaint shops and the home of an urban legend... the Hotel California (yeah, THAT one)

Don Henley has stated in virtually every interview, much to the chagrin of all the owners of "real" hotel californias, that there is no such thing. The song was kinda stolen from a band they toured with, and the lyrics were about seeking fame in California, and succumbing to the tragedies of drugs and partying. There's probably a "real" 'Hotel California' in Siberia.
