• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

New Facebook Virus

No not the one that was in the news a couple of weeks ago that features poor spelling and such. This new one features a post on your News Feed from a friend's acount stating that they've posted some sort of video. The wording is different from post to post, as is the offsite URL that is supposed to take you to that video. When you get there, the page looks like Facebook though. I know this because I've seen one for myself. The first thing you notice is a button telling you to update your Flash Player. Well, that still sounds legit, since that's the method for most video sites. Then a couple of seconds later, there's a run/save dialog asking you to run "setup.exe"! There's nothing saying where this comes from, so I cancelled that. Then I went to Adobe's site and made sure I was up to date. After that, I went back and got the same results, which confirmed my suspicions even further. The final link in the chain was when I talked to my friend by phone and he verified that he had NOT uploaded any video anywhere!

Although the wording and URL are different for each post, the one thing they have in common is the thumbnail image. After saving and scanning a copy, I've attached it here so you can be aware of what to look out for:

My browser blocks the scripts of facebook and further tweeking wont allow facebook, slingo. pogo all three know trouble sites very little admin presence and worst a bunch of loud mouth teens.

Twitter. Not sure exactly what it is but from the bits I've heard, I take it to be something like Facebook.

I know quite a bit about Pogo as Mrs Willy plays those games much like I flight sim. Usually if I'm happy to see her pay for a new Pogo game as I figure then I can buy a new payware aircraft ;).

Facebook has its uses. If you know alot of people, they can be good fun.

My brother uses Facebook and the guy is over 40, lol...

Whats cool is that you can track people you knew back in highschool. So many members...

Thanks for the information, Tom. I, like David_L6, have a Facebook account, but I hardly ever visit it. I spend more time here on SOH than anywhere else.

But my exwife practically lives on Facebook. A few months back, she managed to acquire several Trojans through the numerous stupid applications associated with Facebook. I finally managed to convince her to quit using those apps, after it took me days to eradicate the Trojans....

Scary, very scary,

I just created a facebook account and have a batch of
"old" Air Warriors amongst my friends now, as well as
a niece and some cousins in the Slovak Republic.

My account uses my online personnas name, Gypsy Baron,
since like you, that's who I've been for the past 17 years online :)

Paul ( age 68, BTW )

Paul, be very, very careful on Facebook. Be sure to read up on the options in setup. If I recall correctly, there are a lot of default settings that you might want to change.

Thanks for the heads up Pete. I'm staying away from the "Applications"
stuff and munge some of my data in my profile.

In all my years online I've been pretty lucky in that I've
never had a serious breach of my system.
