Car insurance companies...

... biased, discriminating, no good money grabbing :censored: !!!!

Its that time again ... car insurance .... where selling one of our cars, a nice(ish) Ford Escort Esate (costing more to fix it then what we paid for it, so out it goes). Where buying a nice Citreon picasso, 5 yrs old, tip top condition. So out we got getting quotes ... now for me parents ... was hovering in the £150-£160 range, not to bad .... now .. adding me as a named driver ... cheapest price ... £576, which is stupid ... most expensive ... £2892.85p, which is :censored: stupid ... i've been driving for about 2yrs give or take, havent made any claims and dont have any outstanding court appearances or criminal record and didnt piss in thier private pool in spain. Now for the kicker .. changed meself from a stiz to a stizzina and the cheapest price was .... £386!! I mean for :censored: sake, do they really think anyone would go drag raceing in a picasso! ...

Now the insurance for me on daweo (3 door little thing) was £200 odd and to transfer it to the estate was only an extra £60 or so .. so why would it cost me £426 (with parents price taken out) to go from an estate to a roughly the same size picasso?? ....

I could understand it a little bit if my main job was a bar man or something, but unfortunatly i'm unemployed and on benifits (£192 a month, rent being £180), but they shouldnt be allowed to use that as a basies to charge more ... its not like its a monthly payment! and why the sodding difference between lad and lass?? because of the sterotyped boy racer?? do these :censored: go outside and look at the people there screwing over?? ... and they wonder why younger aged drivers just nick the sodding things!!!

price conversions for the unsure, in order of apearence:

£150 = $246
£576 = $946
£2892.85 = $4,753.05
£386 = $634
£200 odd = $328 odd
£426 = $699
£60 = $98
£192 = $315

Auto insurance is cheaper for a female here too. They claim the women are less likely to have a wreck. I don't see it either.

I've been with the same insurance company for over 30 years on and off now and get a good rate from them as a long time customer. The only break in it was about 12 years ago when I switched to Geico on one vehicle for a year or so. I'll just say that Geico doesn't want to pay off on a claim, so I went back to State Farm.

i always figured the insurance was cheaper in the UK
because of law suits
in the UK you are just insuring a car
and not the medical that goes with it
over here its a big problem
my wife works for an automobile insurance defense Law firm
and believe me there are high claims
whatever happened to fire and theft or comprehensive?

My brother talked to a man who's 16 year old wanted a $16,000 bike. This guy called around for insurance quotes. All but one flatly refused to insure the kid on that bike. The one that did give out a quote? $16,000. :icon_lol:

1996 Chevy Corsica piece of junk, liability with uninsured/under insured protection, double medical coverage, added medical coverage for those people inside my vehicle if I cause the accident. $21 a month.

Prior to the Great Brain Tumor of 2008, when Deb and I had two nice cars we were making overly large payments on each month...our insurance was about $140 a month....but that was full coverage, comprehensive and collision, double the medical coverage, uninsured/under insured protection. Both cars were sport coupes...Deb's was 2004 Dodge Stratus SXT and mine was a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT. Neither of us have ever had tickets or accidents and have been driving more more than 2 decades.

Another (as if we needed more) good reason to seriously consider tort reform in America. Don't know what could be done in Great Britain.

But, this drifts towards politics so, I'll get me hat and stroll over to the Saloon. . .

Have always compared insurance companies (any type) to the mafia. If you don't pay the premiums, then bad things happen to you..........

Just a tip- I'm with Close Premium Finance for my car insurance, via a broker. I wouldn't go with them again.

First off they wouldn't accept my fully comp 2 years insurance history from NZ, then they refused to accept my history here.. got that sorted and even so, I still have problems.

I couldn't get insured on a 1.4 diesel 05 Scenic over here, despite having had a 1.6 car in NZ. "Too powerful", I was told. Funnily enough, I recently got fully comp for my 2.0L mount.

It's all bent- 21 is not a good age for insurance either. I found it was cheaper at 17 to insure my old car, than it would be to insure it now at 21. Magic number perhaps?

Best (as in funny, not monetary) quote I had 3 months ago was £7500, fully comp, per year. Ahyes, but no thanks. That was from the dealer's own "competitive insurance".

the part i don't understand is how they justify basing your premiums on your credit score. did y'all know that it is a major factor in determining how much you pay? the thing is, with insurance, you pay in advance. there is no way to get services you haven't paid for. it's just another part of the scam.
funny how the toughr it is for you to afford, the more expensive they make it.

21 is still considered a boy racer age, just wait till your 25 the premiums will tumble!!!!! I had the same problem back in the day.

Luckly I am now at the 'old fart stage' and fully comp on my Lexus was £287.

Yep...nothing you can do about it unfortunately. Also I believe that statistically, women DO have more motor accidents than men...however the vast majority of the resulting claims are small (eg low speed parking shunts) whereas male drivers tend to be involved in high speed collisions, writing off the vehicles and usually involving injuries or death with resulting higher claims.
Occupation has a bearing on an insurance policy too. For several years I was a sales rep with a company car and was heavily penalised on my own car insurance policy even though I only ever drove it at the weekend.
Back a few years ago the average 20 year old here in Ireland was paying an average of 3-4k for 3rd party fire and theft car insurance.
My insurance is ~ €400 now on a BMW 320d...though I'm an old guy now....though not as old as Noddy!!!!!... :icon_lol: :engel016: :)

I have been with USAA for over 30 years. THE best company I have ever dealt with, bar none. I use them for both cars and house. I have had maybe four claims over that time and they were a joy to work with. No problems what so ever.

My wife loves the check we get back ever year. It goes t her clothing fund. :icon_lol:

Yup, my early years 17-25 for a single male living out on my own and car insurance stunk big time. All of my vehicle purchases during those days were goverend almost completely by the insurance I could get for the car I wanted.

At one point I had a retainer on a brand new Ford van, one of the first years they came out with the long nose style. I was all excited because it had a stick shift on the floor between the seats. I thought that was too cool for a van. The problem turned out to be that my insurance quote for the van came back higher than the car payments would have been. I got my retainer back. I still remember how PO'd I was at the system. :)

Luckily I'm now in the semi-old fart catagory. Very recently I had to say good-bye to a very old friend, my '95 Camry. It had 260,000 miles on it and my goal had been to make 300,000 no matter what. The interior still looked pretty much like no-one had ever sat in it, but just recently it had been in the shop a few times too many. The repairs were still reasonable and nothing serious, but at the same time they had become more frequent.

Reluctantly I went tentative car shopping about three weeks ago just to see what was out there. I've always known the next one was going to be another Camry I was just putting it off as long as possible. I ended up finding a Camry LE with 16,000 miles on it that someone had leased from Toyota and they had just put it back on the lot. It looked brand new inside and out and they re-started the 7 year/100000 mile bumper to bumper new car warranty the moment I drove it off the lot.

I was still a little concerned about the impact on my insurance. A 95' beater compared to the newer one. I called Gieco to get the bad news. I was pretty stunned when she told me, that it would only raise my monthly insurance payment by less than a $1.00 a month. It turns out that the newer cars with all their safety features over shadow the increase in value of the vehicle when compared to my 14 year old car of the same exact model.

another part of the scam is, if you are not insured continuously, WITH A CAR you go on high risk for 1 year. i used to mostly ride a motorcycle, except on snowy days. the price to insure my 87 tercel for the minimum 4 months was rediculous. it didn't matter that i didn't drive the car except for a few months out of the year. it didn't matter that was 38, and had a clean driving record. in order to come off of the high risk insurance i was expected to remain insured for over 1 year on a car i rarely drove.

also, what is the deal with basic insurance? if i have a wreck, it doesn't fix my car, it's supposed to fix the other guys. unless he has basic insurance too. then he gets none, just like me. but somehow, rates would still go up. how does that work? no one gets paid but both get screwed.

Ditto.

Back in May, I got a car of my own for the first time in a year (Drove the Girlfriends Minivan during that time) 94 Ford Crown Victoria, Vermont minimum basic liability through Progressive, $46 a month.

In Aug, I get my Grand Marquis but this one is two years older. Same chassis, just a Mercury rather than a Ford. Insurance?

$51 a month!

Yeah I know, $5 ain't much but it's aggravating that since it's Merc rather than a Ford (And a 92 vs. 94) the price went up.

Oh well.

Back in the days when I was a freshman at college I had a 1980 Chevette. I was just starting to pay for my own insurance and was appalled at the exhorbitant fees for insurance so I asked my insurance agent about it. He said that it didn't matter what I drove I would be charged the same rate based on my age and driving record. So I ended up buying a 1977 Monte Carlo. I figured if I was paying an arm and a leg (the insurance company wouldn't take annoying little brothers; I checked) I might as well be driving something big. Never mind the fact that one of the massive doors was wired shut, rust was everywhere, you could see the fuel gauge move when driving and there was an odd whine that came on whenever the radio was on. But Ohhhhh that engine!!! (350 w/4bbl carb and TH375 tranny).:USA-flag:
Truth be told I don't know how much I pay for insurance (my wife handles that part). I do know that the 1980 Tioga motorhome I have is pretty dirt cheap however. Around here the magic age for cheap insurance is 25 as well.
