Gmax to 3DS Max file exporting?

There's also x to 2ds via TrueSpace 7.6, (don't know if it's available, but it's grreat and fast for quick conversions)

Well, I was unsure if it was right to post it... then I did it since, as you say, the model requires some work anyway, which I think rules out most lamers/rippers - if not all of them.
The method worked for me - I could import some older models I did several years ago... but, as you say, this requires some work - and I it seems that the other methods are more efficient.

By the way, Dassault Systemes offers (for free) 3D Print Screen, which is another OpenGL / DX9 ripper - but I found it has even more disadvantages inlcuding the fact that imported files may have loads of wrong normals and lots of duplicate polys/vertices.
 
I dont know if you were able to find what your looking for, but there is a script that may help you. It goes by two names, Bobo's File Format, or Back From Five. BFF for short. You run the script in Gmax, and it creates a script file. Run that script file in Max and it will re-create the model.

It does good on basic objects, but not animation.

It says it works on old version of max, but I have used this up to Max 2010 without a problem. If Gmax can run scripts, you can use this.

You can't "export" from within Gmax using BFF, only the other way round is possible, that is Max to Gmax.
 
I think these guys that did Blender, have never seen a Windows or Mac OSX program run before. The controls are totally alien, lol..

Good to hear.

Man, I was looking at the Blender controls and clicking things and thinking, this makes no sense.. But everyone that knows the program speaks very highly of it, so it must be pretty dang good.

Once you have run the BFF script in Gmax, remember it's location (where you saved it), then go over to Max, go the maxscript menu choice and choose run script. Choose the script you just created. It will ask you to reset. Say yes. Wait. It can take up to 30 minutes or more. DO NOT SHUTDOWN your max or your computer. Wait.

I just ran Empecks scripts again, ran Listener, ran the Gmax2Oject script, and it ran. This time, before closing out, at the top of the Script window, I found the instructions. After it stops running (complete), you copy/paste the entire thing (in the window) into a TXT file, save, then rename format as OBJ file.

Now to see if it can be opened in Max.

Hey Mike,

They did! But darn if I can not copy the entire thing. The computer only copies slivers of the entire code. No other way to save the Listener Screen window data. It would take perhaps an hour to copy/paste it all into a Notepad file. Control A only copies/selects a very very small area of the entire file.

I started to copy/paste it all and kept losing my place in the stack, lol.. arrgh.
