The world of football is mourning Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke, who died after being hit by a train.
Enke, 32, was struck by a train at a level crossing near Hanover. He had left a suicide note and had been battling depression since 2003.

Just to shed some light in case anyone wonders about my signature.


This is the first death of a well-known person that is getting to me.
Enke was such an awesome goalie, very loyal to his club, an excellent team captain and a wonderful personality.
It's sad to see him go like that...but somehow understandable.

As a reaction, the german national team canceled their friendly game against Chile on saturday.

Bjoern I can relate. The first celebrity death that really affected me was the death of Dale Earnhardt. I was really surprised at how much it bothered me. I then understood why my mother was so affected by the death of JFK, others the death of Diana and others Kirk Cobaine. I think it really tells us how mortal we all are - I guess I always subconsiouly thought if anybody could outrun the Grim Reaper it would be Ironhead in the black No 3.

Very sad story. If you're already prone to depression, the death of a child will certainly make it worse. Condolences to his family and the team.

Something like that.

The bad part is, Enke always seemed so calm as if nothing could ever shake him, not even the death of his own child. I was under the impression that he compensated this tragedy by getting ever better at his job.

But apparently that wasn't the case.

I know what you mean...the first death of this type that affected me was John Wayne in the 70's.

It was like you know they are getting older and maybe haven't been heard from in a while, but they are there. Your personal world remains as it is. Then you hear that they've passed, and suddenly your world is a little less full as you've known it. It was the same (for me) with Ronald Reagan. He was ill for a long while, but he was there.

Someone in the prime of their young life is very sad as you know they had the rest of their life in front of them.
