What is up with Joe Binka's Widgeon?

Beautiful plane, superb VC....but I can't get the plane more than 200 feet into the air and more than 1000 feet from the end of the run way before the cylinder temp pegs the gauge, the engines explode and I fall screaming to my death.

Has anyone figured out how to fly this plane without it over heating. I went into advanced weather and set the air temp from ground level to 40,000 feet at 50 degrees below zero. That is cold enough to freeze breast milk...while it is still in the boobie! And the plane still overheats! Instantly almost.

I just created a new sound pack using the FSX Goose sound files and would love to use them on the R-985 powered Widgeon....but I can't fly the plane for more than 2 mintues.

Not that one....the radial powered G44A...the one with the VC. It states that engine temp monitoring is vital, so use the cowl flaps....even with the cowl flaps fully open (once you shut them...they won't reopen) the plane over heats in about 2 minutes.

Nothing really wrong with the Radial model either....simply reduce pitch soon after getting airborne and then reduce power/rpm and the engines will run just fine.

If you view the airplane in spot view I think you'll see a smoke trail when you push too hard

Overall the damage model is maybe a bit too aggressive but it keeps it very interesting.

Hi All
I've just downloaded Joe's Widgeon - I was particularly after the radial version with VC, but there is no VC panel configuration (lovely VC, but not a guage in sight!), and no matter what values I enter in the aircraft cfg. Viewpoints entry, I can't seem to shift the initial view point from off the floor.
Looks like a wonderful plane...Can anyone Help ? Obio? Please?

A.

Hi,

Thank's but too late .. I beat the two of you :) :)

Find and download it it after a long Google search at:

FS2004/FSX Grumman G-44 Widgeon.
There are two models of the G44 in this package. One is powered by Lycoming GSO480 270 hp inline air cooled 6 cylinder engines. After World War II, when surplus Widgeons were made available for private sale, many Widgeons had the original 200 hp Ranger engines and fixed pitch props, replaced with the more powerful Lycomings and constant speed props. The other version is also a post war modification, but employing Lycoming R680-13 300 hp 9 cycliner radials. This enigne dates back to 1929, and was used to power Stinsons and Stearmans in the 1930's Many a WW II Navy and Army Air Force pilot was trained on a Lycoming R680 powered Stearman primary Trainer. Liveries are supplied for Navy, Coast Guard and private versions.

Will install and test (I have a fire extinguisher StBy .. he he)

Even when taking off with the engines at 25 pounds of manifold pressure, rpms well below the danger zone...I can barely get the plane into the air before it over heats. I suppose I will keep trying to master the plane. It sure is a lovely plane, and one of my favorites.....just wish I could fly it for more more than 2.5 minutes at a time.

Here's the eye point setting I use for the Widgeon. Just copy and paste into your config file in place of the stock Views information.

There was another update to the cfgs and panel released a few days later. It is in the description.

Sorry for the dumb question, but what is the difference between a Widgeon and a Goose ?
This model looks OK, but the Goose from Bill Lyons looks much better, and it has an outstanding virtual cockpit too. The engine overheating feature on this Widgeon sounds very inteesting, though. I wonder if it could be transfered to other planes...

Goose is a larger aircraft, next model up from the Widgeon, I believe.

From Wikepedia: Ze plane! Ze plane! is a Grumman Widgeon (N4453) seen in the opening scenes of the television series Fantasy Island delivering guests to the island. Though it has a checkered past including drug smuggling and a provenance that includes Richard Bach, it survives in the collection of an antique dealer in Hollister, Missouri and is hangared at M. Graham Clark Field, Taney County Airport.

The Goose was A LOT bigger than the Widgeon. The Goose could carry 8 passengers while the Widgeon could only carry 3 I think. The Goose had as an empty weight of 5500 pounds compared to 3200 for the Widgeon. Basically the Widgeon is the Goose's Mini-Me.

You really need to see the Joe's Widgeon in sim to see how sharp it is. THe regular G44 is powered by two inline engines and does not have a VC (the reason I don't fly it)...but the G44A is powered by two radials and has a very sharp VC....and a massive heating problem which I wish I could turn OFFFFFFF!

OBIO

OBIO, do you have Michael Verlin's v2 updates listed above?? I don't have mine installed right now, and haven't flown in quite a while, but I seem to recall it was corrected, or controlled better, in v2.

All the updates are available at Flightsim.com

Hi,

This is the beginning of the readme of mine.(from http://www.fs-freeware.net/ )
I have no probs with engines !!

Grumman G44 Widgeon for FS2004
by Joe Binka
Panel, FDE and Textures
by Michael Verlin
May 30, 2007

This is a re-release of the G44 Widgeon by Joe Binka. The FDE was made by myself with the help of Jerry Beckwith's AirWrench.
The panel bitmaps were made by myself. The primary flight instruments and many of the other gauges are stock FS9. The radio stack gauges were made by Gerd R. Nehr. The Cessna DG was made by Jim Robinson. The overhead guages were taken from Joe Binka's original gauge set, modified for use in the new panel.
The sound packages were derived from two sources: The GSO480 package comes from Aaron Swindle's sounds made for Milton Shupe's Aero Commander. The R680-13 package comes from a sounds made by Mike Hambly for an FS98 Stinson package. Both packages have been adapted for use by incorporation of Mike Hambly's waterloop sounds and other adaptations.
Liveries are supplied for Navy, Coast Guard and private versions painted by Michael Verlin.
If you have the RealityXP Flightline T and N as well as the Simflyer GPX-SX Bendix King Radios, an alternative panel configuration file and gauge configuration files are included for your convenience.
