so far every response i have gotten to the literally 80-90 resume's i sent out are from these staffing agents that want me to sign waivers so i won't get worker's comp if i'm injured on the job, or want me to work nights for $10/hr and offer a whopping 10 cent shift differential. i don't do night work for that kind of $$. since i have begun my job search the spam i get has quadrupled in the last 3 weeks.

I was unemployed for a long bout of time a few years back. Longest time of my life. Almost lost my car. I put in so many resume's, it wasnt funny. I had thought I would be unemployed for a week at most. I thought it would be perhaps a 4 or 5 day vacation and would be working again on Monday. Oh man.... Nearly a year later, I finally ended up getting a job at Walmart and man, I actually loved it. I worked with a great team of people and kind of hated to leave when my own business began to take off. I really hated my first day at work, just before punching in. I thought it was the worst day of my life. Ended up being a pretty fun job and they paid me pretty fair and I learned tons about customer service in extreme cases.
I learned alot from all of that.
Hang in there man. Keep strong and keep the faith and keep trying. Know that there is a good position out there somewhere for you waiting for you to show up.

Cheezyflier: I sense some real frustration on your part and understandably so. I have a job now but I don't know if I will have a job tomorrow. The firm I work for has been acquired recently by a larger firm and they are running a duplicate operation in a different area of the world. They are hiring there because wages are lower and curtailing operations in the part of the world that I am at because wages are higher. This has been going on for the last 30 years in the manufacturing sector and now it has come to the servicing sector with a vengeance.
I am older than you are so I don’t have a real big stretch of time before retirement age. These are very tough times for labor and the capitalists know it. But the question is? If we, as in competitive costs for production economies are racing each other to the bottom to provide ever cheaper and cheaper labor, who then can afford to buy the crap or shoddy services that anybody out there is making or providing. There has to be a consumer. And, he is…..you and me. There has got to be a sea change for labor sooner or later in North America or the revolution will be in the streets, me thinks.
You’re in Toronto correct? Are you able to relocate to a minor market, i.e. boonies, where the cost of living may be lower but the demand for your qualifications may be greater? Maybe think of it as a working sabbatical to study the wildlife and aboriginal culture in the "Great White North?" Store your stuff in Toronto if you can do it cheaply or sell it or just give it away if you can. Believe me when I say. You can always get more stuff at a later date when things get good again. They will get good again. The question is when. Try to make the fact that you’re looking for a new position an adventure and an opportunity for a change. Otherwise, it will eat you up and the ba$tard$ win. It’s good to vent your frustrations among your friends and here at the SOH is just the place.

Cheezyflyer, what type of work are you looking for? I know a few good souls in the GTA and I see all of our internal postings, if I know what you are looking for I can always give you a heads up if I see something that suites your interest.
In case your curious I work for the guys that sell all the office "Toys" if you are living inToronto I am sure you have heard of James Grand & Samual Toy.

I feel ya, I was between jobs about 7 years ago for a month, sent out about 2000 resumes, went to about 40 interviews, talked to several headhunters, not a fun experience.

Our store actually had great customer service and we frequently got compliments form customers to our management. Maybe we were a special group. Who knows. We had a blast though.

there's really no re-locating possible right now. i'm actually an american and have already re-located. (to here)
actually, i have a pretty good spot waiting for me with local 30 (ontario sheetmetal workers union) once i can get the $$ together to pay for my license, buy in, and a handful of tools that i wasn't able to bring with me from the states. there was only so much room in the car when i came here, lol.
i'm just trying to find work to generate that cash. i managed to get some work detailing cars here and there. it's happening, just not at the speed i want it to, know what i mean? i see these outfits who's function is to prey on people who are out of work and it makes me nuts. it's real easy for people to lay back and collect some sort of benefits and still get by. lots of people are doing just that. for the few people who want to climb out the right way, they have to watch out for opportunists who want to prey on them. i've never seen that before. at least in delaware or any of the south eastern states it's not done.
