Hoping no one from the FSX forums sees me here...:kilroy:

I do terrain work in FSX, but have found the source material works well in FS9 with a little effort. The most favorite place for me to fly is Hawai'i, so I have made some high resolution mesh for the islands and it's available to SOH members first;

http://www.lcsims.com/LCS9HI/LCS9_Hawaii.zip

I'll get it uploaded to the download site when I get my "special access" and it will eventually find it's way to Avsim and Simviation. But for now if anyone wants to give it a try, feel free. Any problems with it, let me know. But the source material is solid stuff, not the usual FS9 level Shuttle mapping material. There is one change to the FS9.Cfg file required, if it hasn't already been made on a user's system. But this will only take a couple of minutes.

Enjoy the flights around Hawai'i, which IMHO looks better in 9 than X!!!

Thanks for the reports. Like I mentioned above, in FS9 mesh displays much better than in FSX. Part of the "tweaking" that was done to FSX a little before release to try and boost performance.

I've just discovered some more stuff for Hawai'i that I did a loonnngggg time ago. I'll have to see if I can recall what all it does and if it's releasable or not. And then there are the custom lighthouses that were modelled for me by a friend. Will have to see if those files are complete or not, because it's been 3+ years. But if they do work like they once did, it adds a nice touch to night flying around the islands.

I dunno...they look pretty good in FSX too! I took an early morning patrol with them and I was impressed.

Dumb question as I've never messed with scenery before. Once you click on properties, where do you go next to change the XX to 21 per the read me file?

Hi,

If you use WinXP you can find the file to be modified (FS9.CFG) here:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9

If you use Vista

C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9

Open FS9.CFG (with Notepad)
Search for:
[TERRAIN]

And modify this string to have

TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21

Let the other strings untouched

And save :)

Just a heads up, the file is now available at SOH so I'll be removing it from my server.

Shamelsss plug! I'll be releasing a West Coast mesh package for FS9 in a couple, three weeks. Payware, sorry! But very reasonably priced and a very large download, guessing 4 to 5 gb worth of 19m mesh for the Western 11 states.

I sure would like to see a landclass file that makes the cliffs in Hawaii look like they really are which is mostly green.
