NEW Realistic HUD for the FSX Acceleration F/A-18 Hornet
220.54kb (87 downloads)
A realistic head-up display (HUD) for the FSX Acceleration F/A-18 Hornet. The HUD is an enhanced version of the original HUD for the F/A-18 by Scott Printz. The original functionality Scott built into it is preserved, and the following new features are added: 1) Precise ILS and TACAN navigation for aircraft carriers (including moving carriers) that allow carrier landings in low visibility and at night. 2) The HUD symbology is conformal to the outside world: The horizon bar stays on the horizon, velocity vector shows actual flight path as read against the outside world (if you keep your vector pointed at a certain spot on the runway, this is exactly where you will land). 3) Caged mode with ghost vector for use in heavy side wind conditions. 4) Elements repositioned to make the HUD look as close as possible to the real Hornet HUD. Thanks for the "Heads-Up" wilycoyote4! :d

This is a nice HUD. It's not “collimated” as I thought it would be based on the description, and in fact he states clearly that it is not, in the readme file, so I'm fine with that. I like to sit a bit higher in the seat in the FA-18C than the default eyepoint has it, but the symbology is “fitted” so that it conforms properly to the horizon when your eyepoint is set at the default values for this plane. The reason they state that the horizon line “stays on the horizon” is that the HUD that came with the Acceleration FA-18C didn't even do that, which I never really noticed until now! All around I give it 1.5 thumbs up. I'd have given it a 2.0 had it been collimated!

Thanks to wilycoyote4 for spreading the word for the HUD and the nice screenshots :icon_lol:

A couple of people requested to make the HUD available for Dino's T-45 Goshawk, so I am working on that now and I'll post the install instructions as soon as I am ready.

what does "collimated" mean?

Collimated means the symbols on the HUD appear to be focused out in space in front of the HUD glass. Also why this is sometimes called “focused to infinity”. The result that moving your head about the cockpit has no effect on the placement of the symbols. In FS planes, A2A has achieved this with many of their WW-II gun-sights, as this was a feature of many WW-II reflected gun sights. Some jets for FSX have this too, so that as you move your head around with your Track-IR, the symbols stay “painted” on the world outside in the same location. It's cool!

In a real HUD, the effect is even more "interesting" because the symbols really are "focused to infinity". You have to focus your eyes to "infinity", as you would if looking at the distant horizon, to focus on the symbols. They don't "appear" on the glass, but outside on the sky.

That's great NEWS! :applause: I hope Mr. Dino's F-14D Tomcat is next.:jump:

PS: If anyone else wants it; I'll try (using your F/A-18 Panel.cfg data) to do it for the CaptainSim XLoad aircraft (if I find the time this weekend). I think you've got plenty on your hands already.
Thanks again! :wavey:

I'm going to use it in the aerialfoundry CF-188.
I know it's a port, but those of us stuck at SP1 don't see any reason why we can't have an F-18.

Nice work on the HUD!
Regarding using the HUD for instrument approaches (TACAN), and ILS/ACLS - I was not aware that Javier's (Thrawn's) Nimitz/Ike had a TACAN channel or an ILS freq. Did I miss something? If anyone has info on that, I would (and many others I am certain) would appreciate the details.

Again - great work!

Cheers,

Mr. Deke "Navy81,"

Yes they do; I discover that, too, from Mr. J. R. "neutrino" here...

...Since these are both default carriers and not the Nimitz carrier, the frequency for the ILS/TACAN would be 111 MHz or TACAN channel 47X.

The Nimitz carrier you can get if you have Javier's Nimitz package and use the AICarriers utility and place the carrier wherever you want while in flight. The freq is 112MHz or TACAN channel 57X....
Hope this helped! :wavey:

PS: Thank you, as well, Mr. "ryanbatc"! ;)
