Another favorite singer of mine, Andrea Bocelli. This year, for the first time ever, Bocelli made a Christmas album. I bought it last week, at Starbucks. Amazing album!! Here's one of the songs, "What Child is This?", in duet with Mary J. Blige.

N4gix~ Oh Boney M.! Hubby LOVES that group, so I'm very familiar with their music. Great choice of song! And I have to tell you Bill, the "Pueri Concinite" performed by the Vienna Boys Choir, brougth tears to my eyes. Quite the pure voice he has that little fellow! Simply beautiful! I would classify myself as a secular person and not religious. That said, I do like history and to explore different cultures through the study of art and music. Christmas is celebrated on every continent in the world, even Antarctica. This is high summer down there and I know there are those that celebrate among the personnel at the research stations. In 1968, Christmas Eve was celebrated during an elliptical orbit from 194 to 70 miles above the lunar surface in Apollo 8. This is not to say that other religious beliefs and holidays are not global and have not or will not be observed in space. Wherever humans go, we will take our beliefs and culture. The world has become smaller since that first Christmas a couple thousand years ago, give or take a year or two. Even the scholars aren’t quite sure of the date or the year. Cultures and religions have become geographically diverse and exist in many areas now very far away from their centers of origin. The need for tolerance is greater today than it has ever been.
Christmas has been celebrated differently in many different cultures and denominations. The English Puritans that settled the Massachusetts Colony in the 1600’s kept Christmas in a very subdued manner. It was a day devoted to prayer and reflection and certainly not a time for merriment and indulgence. But, then with the Puritans when was it ever a time for such things. I have selected some music from the Eastern Orthodox, Chaldean and Syriac Churches that celebrate Christmas. Some are very ancient originating from Byzantine times. I found them beautiful and interesting, in some cases almost mesmerizing and meditative. Perhaps, you’ll fell the same.

Xmas....Bah Humbug!

I'd much rather celebrate something with some REAL meaning ...like December the 21/22...the Winter Solstice...at least I know the warmer weather is coming back once we pass that point.

Yarrrrh! I too be wanting just a flagon of mead and the Yule Boar, no offense Piglet, roasting on a spit over the Yule Log and wishing for Spring and some relief from the pain of these chilblains. But alas no, we had to get all civilized and such. Next they'll be asking me to bathe and attend regular services at the kirk.

Christmas to me is very special. I guess it would be, considering that I was born on Christmas. :) However, that is not the real reason I consider it special.

You see, Christmas is the only holiday that I know of that has the ability to change people for the better. There is something magical about the way people seem to become more charitable and loving. Only on Christmas will you see strangers go out of their way to be nice to others. They touch other strangers in a positive way. To me it is beautiful. The term "Christmas Spirit" is more than a cliche. It is a real sense of goodness and beauty that for a short while, brings out the best in us. I love the Season.

As for songs, so many beautiful, cute and funny songs has been linked. I love so many Christmas songs. However, if I had to pick one song that says, "Christmas" to me, it would be O Holy Night.

There are many, many wonderful talented singers who have done this song justice. One of the more contemporary singers who turns this song into angelic singing is this one:
