Last night before bed, I went to shut down and my screen was a horrible looking 640 X 800 scratchy mumble-jumble.

I was able to shut down and I took the tower out and cleaned all, then put the second video card on top and the one I was hooked to in an SLI connection on the bottom. Yep, sure enough, chalk up one more EVGA 8800 GTS to ye gods of fate. I am operating on the good card now and I'm headed to Tiger Direct in Durham, NC to get a new set of nVidia cards (upgrading of course) and maybe 2 more GB of RAM around 10:00.

FS9 flies fine on one card, but I need two SLI-d to fly FSX at all.

Thats a long drive ....I was not aware that there was a Tiger Direct in Durham......Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Good to know

Can you say Crossfire 4890's ?

Or SLI GTX 275's ?

Depending on your MoBo.... I guess you have Nvidia ..never mind..LOL Safe trip Cazzie

Don't have a Crossfire MB HM. It's not a long drive at all for me, right at an hour to get there, about 55 miles from my abode.

They use the name CompUSA now, but Tiger Direct bought our CompUSA. For some reason, they use the names CompUSA now in Raleigh and Durham. Both were Tiger Direct. Now the GTX 275s, I'm looking at a low end one of those.

Caz, if you'd stay off those porn sites your video cards would be just fine. ;)

Have a good trip and take the wife's credit card. ;)

I just got a pair of 9500 GTs. My 7600 GXs were not good enough for ROF.

I ordered from TigerDirect next day delivery. :)

I had a fried 8800GTS too, which disturbed me a little.
Yours is the fourth flightsim installation I know of, letting smoke out of one of these.
I went out and bought a 250 GTS which is less than perfect.
I'd be interested to hear what you replace yours with.

Gloom, despair, and agony on me.......

Deep dark depression, excessive misery!

Well guys, it's one da*n thing after another, isn't it!

I got a 260 GTX. Wanted the 285, but that was just too much $$$.

However, in spite of everything I do by the book, the card is recognized, but I get some frekkin' error in the Device Manager that Windoz has chosen to shut down this device! Error 43 I think.

I am back on the one good 8800 GTS and I'm piddling. At least I have my full screen and not some 640 X 800 speckled gibberish!

Everything performs fine on one card except FSX. I do not even notice a frame drop in FS9 on the one card.

Harleyman, Moe, TexNetCop, you got any Ideas? I got a$200.00 nVidia 260 GTX laying waste on my table. I'm all out today, I have the computer flu, driving two hours, shopping one hour, y'all know how we men enjoy that! I have been needling with this mess for three hours discounting the one hour I drove my son in to work and back. I may tackle it tomorrow after some professional assistance.

Caz~ I'm sorry you have to deal with that mess! Sounds like you had a rough day all around!
I hope you get your PC issues resolved sooner than later.
We miss you when you're not here!

You sure you don't have a bits and pieces of the old drives lying around causing mischief?

I thought when you do SLI both cards have to be the same for the bridge to fit and match up. How did you check out the other card to make sure that was the problem...Mike

For the youngsters among us that have no idea where that comes from, Caz, thought I'd help them out.

This is just ONE version of that tune ... there's a whole mess of em with different stories ...

Mike, the 260 GTX is stand alone, like the single 8800 I am using now. It can be SLI'd 2 or three ways, but I am told that a single 260 is better than 2 SLI 9800 cards.

I checked the two cards by first removing the faulty card from last night and replacing it with the other card. All came up fine this morning. So I got smart and went ahead and put the other card in and set the SLI bridge.

Guess what, no SLI in the control panel. Just out of mischief, I took the card that was working out and hooked up the faulty card again. Ditto, same screwy screen.

I get almost the same screen with the 260 GTX and just can in no way get the system to recognize the drivers.

John, I uninstalled all previous nvidia drivers and even did a crap cleaner to clean the registry. I even open the registry to look for nvidia entries.

I am puzzled, but I am happy to have a unit at all.

Some of you guys have had a rough time of it physically and financially this season, my troubles are only the mere mental frustrations of a da*n computer. I'll get to the bottom of it, I have a tenacious type-A personality, I shall not be beaten until I am down and out for the ten count! :icon29:

Here is what I would do...

With the 260 installed..Delete all Nvidia drivers....(display only)

Then enter safe mode and use a driver cleaner to remove any traces of it..

Then reboot..Enter the regestry and look under all three software tabs for any display driver remains..Delete them manually.

Reboot again to the desktop(with no internet connection, so windows does not install anything)

Install your new driver...

Set it up as you had it in SLI.except for single monitor...(no SLI naturally)
Now..if it is anything other than default settings, you still have traces there somewhere of old drivers)

If not you should be good to go.

What is your Power Supply..many overlook that as a source of oddities..Possiable to be under powered???

Also go into add/ remove and delets any PhysX stuff ..They can cause problems at times too.(do that as last resort)

Something else I been thinking about. I had something like that happen to me a while back and found out that DX9c was the problem. Once I removed all the drivers and went into safe mode and removed the left overs, I reinstalled DX9 first and rebooted then installed the current video driver...Mike

Mason and Mike, I had not thought of not hooking up the Internet connection, that could very well be the problem. Windoz keeps wanting to search for and install drivers for new software, but it does not give me the option to Cancel. No Internet connection and playing in the Safe Mode could be what is called for. Will hit it in the morning when I am fresh.

Thanks for the thoughts C9G. I'm a survivor, as I said, lots of folks got it off worse than a pissly little computer glitch me.

Hi Cazzie,
I don't know if this will help but I was having driver install issues too. Read the linked post to see what worked for me.

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=29297

If Windows won't allow you to stay running with the new card maybe you could do what I did using the Standard VGA driver leaving your old card in. When you reboot the display will be low resolution but that's OK. Shut down and swap cards. The standard VGA driver should work with your new card too. If so, install the new drivers.

Several people recomend the 182.5 drivers which work great for me in FSX. Could just be older info but I'm happy with them.

Hope you get it sorted.
