Six for Saturday

TopGun...a love-hate relationship deluxe.

To like it you either have to be young and innocent or absolutely devoid of military aviation knowledge or both.

Rationally, there's no reason at all to watch or like this movie. Awful story, awful flying, awful cuts. The best thing about it is the cinematography between cuts.

And still you watch it over and over again...for your memories when you watched it in your early teens. Argh!

...and I don't believe that two guys can punch each other in the face for two hours and still stand. I don't believe one guy can take on half the Vietnamese and Russian armies by himself and I don't believe in such things a robotic flying suits with heads up displays and powered by a device implanted into a mans body but somehow I still enjoy the movies about such non-sense.
I suggest you stick to documentaries if it takes believability for you to enjoy a movie. :mixedsmi:

..or just love fast, noisy aircraft that fly off ships and shoot stuff, and...and...

That's the whole point. But just from cut to cut. ;)

Turns out they had used every single bit of the air-air footage previously shot. (Essentially unheard of in moviemaking)

Tony Scott reportedly even bought them one or two days of extra filming on the Enterprise.

and an interesting commentary by Quentin Tarantino (warning: vulgar)

LoL!

I do too once in a while. But believability ranks way higher than entertainment for a movie to be considered "good" by me.

Documentaries are the most interesting things on TV anyways.

Hmm, top 6 huh?

1. Sense and Sensibility (what can I say, hopeless romantic)

4. Jurassic Park (love this one)

for a bit of trivia, know that the way they sold ang lee on doing "crouching tiger hidden dragon" was by descrbing it as sense and sensibility, but with martial arts

if you liked jurrasic park, read chrichton's other books. he was a great writer who loved to infuse his books with alot of factual research.

The Usual Suspects

Life Is Beautiful (La Vita e Bella)

several people have mentioned the usual suspects. i agree it is a great movie.

AAAAAAUUUUGGGHHH!!!!!! i am such a weiner for forgetting begnini's master piece!!!!
that underscores my point nicely though. it's a wonderful film, i definitely would have bumped something else to include it had it not slipped my mind. thank you!

1. Shawshank Redemption
2. Das Boot
3. Cross of Iron
4. One day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch
5. Doctor Zhivago

This I wholeheartedly agree with. On certain subjects some of his research is a little bit ropey and you have to take it with a pinch of salt but he was fantastic at building suspense and making the pseudo-science behind the whole thing very interesting. "Prey" is one of my favourites, the premise is rather flimsy but if you can suspend disbelief and kick start your imagination again it's a very rewarding read. The only two novels he has written that I never really enjoyed were "The Great Train Robbery" and "Next", the latter just felt like a vessel for informing on his own opinions about climate change. " The Andromeda Strain" and "A Case Of Need" are fantastic two of my favourites.

6.025: Streets of Fire!

Love that movie. Great music. And Diane Lane is hotter than super duper blazing hot! :icon_twi: This song is actually done by a group called Fire Inc.

i am guessing you mean "state of fear"? i just tonight began reading "next" and so far it seems to be about genetic manipulation. i liked state of fear for the story. that i am skeptical of global warming probably was a contributing factor though.

You are correct, I do mean State of Fear. I too am skeptical about global warming but found it less of a story and more of a rant.
