Bosnia and Kosovo

Per request, I'm uploading a bunch of pics I took back in the day. These photos were taken between 1995 and 1999, between Croatia and Kosovo during the Balkans conflict.

I'd like to see some real scenery for FS9 some day.

And some more. I have some pictures of mass graves but not sure if its inappropriate or not. Maybe staff can advise on that.

I spent a couple of months in early '96 within artillery range of the coast of Bosnia with a full load of Marines on my ship. Never did get to see what the country looked like though.

What kind of jet is that burned out?

ETA: I think I'd leave the mass graves out.

Yep, I have a lot of pictures.

Supposedly a Mig 29 but it looked a lot like an F-15 to me.

Man, that was a horrible war... Thank the Lord that is over.

Willy, that looks like a Russian fighter by the angle of the rudders. An F-15's rudders are straight up. Maybe a Sukoi?

I think those engines are too far apart to be an F-15. Mig 29 seems right based on what looks like the melted sensor boom between the engines.

These are really interesting pictures by the way. I'd be interested to hear the stories behind them.

thank you so much for sharing those, it is remarkable to see the actual place and real things happening. thank you.

I'm thinking Mig 29 judging by the extended rib at the base of the vertical fins. At first I thought of Su 27 from what looks like a sensor boom, but I believe that is a drogue shoot partially hanging out.

When I look back at some of these past conflicts, I sometimes think of the citizens and how so many of them don't care who's who or what's what or what's at steak. Some just want to live their existence without disruption.

Thanks for sharing!!!

Very sad, due to distracting or incomplete media-information, I/we in central Europe never really got what the entire conflict really was all about in the first place.

Regards
Alex

Fascinating pictures there :salute:. I believe that crashed plane is a Yugoslav MiG-29. That was shot down by a Dutch F-16AM (J-063) with an AIM-120A.

There were several aircraft shot down, including an American F-117 by a SAM. The Serbs couldn't really put anything into the air with capable enough pilots to even remotely compete with NATO aircraft.

In short, it was over Ethnic Cleansing. The Serbs thought they were a superior race and and they wanted to "cleanse" the country free of Croats and Muslims.

It was really a mess. Half the population wanted us there and the other half didn't. I ended up doing 4 tours, with the last one being in the summer of 99. Ever since then, I've been fascinated with that part of the world and its history.

It took me a few years to really understand why we were there and what we were doing. It took me studying up on it years later, to really understand the history. And looking back now, I realize that I was a part of it.

This was my squad as of 1997. And the other is a 1000 year old Turkish fort right outside of Sarajevo.

I spent several months there on two deployments during the war. Except for the combat-related damages I was awestruck by how beautiful the country of Bosnia truly is!

Interesting pictures. Thanks for sharing. I didn't even know we have boots on the ground. I thought it was all flying above 10,000 feet.

Shows how little I know of this conflict.

Had.

I dont think there are many left there anymore. Its been 15 years since the first troops went into Bosnia and 11 years since the first group went into Kosovo.

That's what Wikipedia is for. :kilroy: :icon_lol:

Basically, it was just an extension of centuries of colliding interests.

I hope that is settled by now.

And am I the only one who immediately recognized the wreck as a MiG-29?

Anyways, fascinating photos. Might go on holidays there this summer.

Well, the odds were 20:1 in the air or so, so why dare in the first place?

The Serbs were pretty clever though when it came to operating SAMs and fooling the NATO with decoys.
