i don't understand why those pictures were classified in the first place. why in the hell would it take 10 years and a court ruling to get something like that released?
 
I think for the period of time they were used for event analysis, they were considered official documentary evidence and not subject to publication. More of an administrative procedure rather than an attempt to hide anything.

Remember, these photos were the property of the NYPD, not the intellectual property of the individual photographer (an NYPD officer).
 
whilst i agree the whole 9/11 conspiracy thing is total lunacy, i don't buy the administrative thing. otherwise they would not have had to force them to be released. what i mean is, to my untrained eye, the photos hold no strategic value. if it was just an administrative thing then why did it require the leverage of the court? and why so long? surely the analysis couldn't have lasted this long.
 
It should fuel our desire to bring those responsible to justice, such as the desert rat over there hiding out in caves.

Cheezy, couldn't the terrorists use the photos for bomb damage assessment purposes to plot another attack? Just an idea as to the classified nature. That might've been the thinking to deny them any type of feedback-type intelligence.
 
I do remember seeing a news report on how the classification of government materials has skyrocketed over the years, and that's even before 9/11. I think it's just ordinary CYA. NOT that they are aware of anything that they did wrong, it's just easier to hide stuff then have the press question it. (Not that I think that is right either.)

Most often photos are classified simply to protect the source. While I understand in this case that might be overcome by simply referencing the department, it is also possible that it protected the individuals.

Remember, it was an act of war. So, there was a climate to protect people involved in the rescue and recovery from what were expected at the time to be a series of follow-on attacks by Al Qaeda.

The court ruling coming 10 years after does seem questionable. Sometimes, bureaucracy simply gums up the works on doing rational things.
