Hidden files by add-ons in FSX

I am sure I am not unique with this problem. The time and energy it takes to reinstall FSX as you get more and more add-ons. Last weekend, I gathered up all of my FSX airplanes with keys, S/N, purchase agreements, etc. I had to use three DVDs to save them all. That is just the airplanes.

I have been thinking of ways to try and make reinstalling quicker and easier. I know that Flight1 products often require that you go through their system to reinstall and that they put files in other places, besides the FSX folders. I know that FSD does the same.

Who else requires you to jump through hoops to reinstall your add-on? And, maybe the better question, is can you save these add-on files in a manner that they can be easily reinstalled in the future? I have made backups of all of the FSX folders onto hard drives. But, when you do that, some of the add-ons will not work correctly after a simple copy to your computer. I have made iso images of the drive. However, I doubt this will work if FSX is installed on a different drive from the O.S? Scenery files can eventually eat up an entire 300mb Raptor drive.

I have started saving the entire zipped Installers on a backup HD in a folder. Each zip file has the code/passwords, sales info for each zip, all each in seperate folders in the main save folder on the backup drive. Thus, I can just go through the list and install each and not have to worry about recreating their own system of installing, adding registries, etc.

may i ask a related question? when we get a new computer are supposed to buy the add-ons again or can we just move them?
 
Don't developers wish. LOL So long as you are only using them on one computer at a time, you should be fine. I am not aware of any developers who say you much but new, if you change computers...besides Microsoft, that is.

Bill I have done that too. I was talking about the airplanes that won't just let you move the texture, air, etc files from one computer to another. Some must work with the registry. The F6F Hellcat is one that comes to mind, or the FSD planes. The instruments won't show or work, if all you do is drag over files. This makes it a bitch to back up.

If you are not still using the old computer than you are ok to install on the new one. Typically the license when you bought the aircraft allows use on one PC. If it says "one user" rather than "one PC" then YOU can still run it on the old PC as well as the new PC.

If you give the old PC away (or more importantly, the hard drive with the data) you should remove those files otherwise you are most likely violating the license and copyright by distributing copies without a license to do so.

For my planes, I allow people to add them to another computer in their own home, such as the laptop. Many guys travel (and girls) and so they can fly when at a motel at night, as well as back home on their gaming computer.

Just no handing it out to all their friends.... arrgh.

I know what you mean. It would have been nice if FS had included a "back-up" function, that would allow us to easily restore our FS experience after a fresh re-install or reformat of the HD. It takes me months to get all of my scenery files installed, at least it did in FS9. Part of that work is working out issues between meshes/sceneries by different parties, etc. There is a lot of work involved and many times, I will just put up with FS errors that occur occasionally rather than have to un-install/re-install then relive all of those headaches again.

Ditto Bill, double backup really, save to an external HD with license and key and also to a CD or DVD, whichever is required.
