Chile - 8.8 Quake..!

Thanks Paul for the heads up. Thats horrible news. 90 seconds at 8.8. Tsunami's going outward with warnings sent as far away as Russia, Japan, New Zealand...
 
Two big quakes, on opposite sides of the Pacific rim, a couple of days apart?

Time to batten down the hatches folks cus something big is on the move!
 
And take a wild guess where the largest earthquake ever recorded happened, at 9.something: Hint: Chile! (just Googled that.) Some serious tectonic plate action going on down there! Evidently Chile gets lots of large quakes at quite frequent intervals. Lets hope the builds down there were better constructed than in Haiti...
 
Wow! Looking @ the Terrible Devastation,reminds me of how really fragile life/we all are.
 
...and of course some idiot surfer in Hawaii is going to ignore the tsunami warnings and head out to ride.
 
Looks like the US is finally perfecting that earthquake machine we've been working on, lo these many years.

It's true that Chile is smack in the middle of a powerful earthquake prone zone - but, in all of Latin America, Chile has the best and most effective emergency response agencies from their version of FEMA on down to local EMS and disaster responders.

They're smart, tough people and know what they're doing with this stuff.
 
So far, the government of Chile has not requested international assistance. As stated previously by Toastmaker, Chile has an amazing emergency system....they get lots of earthquakes of substantial size...they are well versed in emergency procedures and they have a very good building code system....if you watch the news coverage, you will see a lot of large buildings that took serious damage, but they did not pancake or fall. Some older buildings did crumble...but nothing on the level seen in Haiti. The Chilean government has been a stable government for many many years without all the corruption that prevents a government from being an effective body able to help its citizens in times of need.

Sure, there will be deaths, there will be a lot of work cleaning up and rebuilding...but it looks like those people have things well in hand. Now, I'm not saying we (meaning the US) should not offer such assistance as may be needed.

he would really have to be an idiot to try to ride a tsunami. the wave isn't actually that tall, but they move at ludicrous speed.
 
NZ east coast is experiencing the first drawdowns before the tsunami arrives.
Some folks are preferring to go down to the beach to have a look, rather than head inland to higher ground...:isadizzy:

We were headed for port on the Big Island when the warning came.I turned back out to sea as I was advised because we would be safer.The coastal areas slow down the wave and it builds up and than and than gets funneled even more when it gets to a harbor.When it got here we were about 15 miles from land and it had little effect on us. 2 waves about 5 to 6 ft.

Mind you, a 5-6 foot wave coming over the ocean with hundreds of feet of ocean below it. That's a lot of energy!

True Ken but it's more dangerous at the coastlines because it gets bigger as it slows while the energy behind it keeps pushing it.

Oh yeah, I know!

Smart move no question. I was just commenting that the wave effect meant it had tremendous force.
