Question of FSX Deluxe

OBIO

Retired SOH Admin
I have FSX Deluxe. I have had it installed a couple of times and all I got was stutter. I am thinking about reinstalling it...just so I can test some sound packs I am working on in it. And to check out some of the new stuff my Piglet and Wozza's new Texan....the screen shots have pulled me to the Dark Side LOL!

Are there any patches or updates that would make FSX Deluxe run smoother? My system specs are below...and no, it's not a modern power house, so I don't expect super fluid performance...just need something more than a slide show. Oh, I don't care about big city scenery...I do most of my flying out in the bush, small grass strips. I prefer mountains over sky scrapers any day of the week.

P4 3.0 Ghz processor
2 Gig PC3200 Ram
512 Meg Nvidia GeForce 7600GS video
160 Gig C drive
250 Gig D drive

Before my current rig, I ran FSX fine on a system a bit less than yours. here/'s what i would do. install FSX, defrag, install SP1, defrag and try it out, play with the sliders and settings. Autogen at normal is a bit more than maxed in FS9. If getting good performance you can decide to go with SP2 or not, personally I would, it contains quite a few fixes and is the final version of FSX so it should be installed, BUT some are still on SP1 for whatever reasons.

Since you don't care about the cities, there is a CFG tweak that limits the autogen for both objects and vegetation, effectively eliminating most of the buildings while leaving the trees as autogen.

My thought would be to at least double your ram, but be sure to match the specs of the ram you have now.

My previous computer was slightly less capable than yours (only a 256Mb GFX card) and I could run FSX smoothly at about 20-25 FPS so you should be good once you can figure out what is causing your stutters.

I would suggest you patch up to SP.2 and make sure you have the latest flavour of DX9c and the latest video drivers.

I found the greatest improvement for me after the DX9 and GFX driver updates was when I started using a combination of nHancer (set up correctly....there is a well known 'how to' out there) and 'FPS Limiter' and allowing the latter to control my FPS rather than setting it in FSX. Things went super smooth with the above combo.

OBIO these tweaks were originally for low end systems. The only thing I would change on here are the tree and building numbers lower them to 2500/2800 for a video card that is 128bit interface and uses GDDR2 memory.
This should help

My system is MAXED! This is as far as the old gal can go.

Will give all the tips and tweaks a try. Like I said, I mainly want FSX to do some testing and to check out a few of the newer planes by Piglet, Wozza and a few others. FS9 will still my my main flying sim...my system runs it superbly well...and since I am new to FS9 (have had it just a little over a year now), there is still a ton for me to discover and enjoy in that sim. Down the road, I may have a system to run FSX at the level that my current one runs FS9....and I may spend more time in FSX.

Before I finally managed to afford & build the rig I have now I just limited my flying to less congested areas & kept the sliders reasonable. There is a reason many of my project w.i.p. shots are taken flying over the desert ;)

PC3200 speed ram is slowwwwwwwwwww

BUT......

What do you mean PC3200 ram is slow. The system I had before this had PC1600 and the system before that had PC800 I think...it was GAWD AWFUL SLOW!...and that system was a 800Mhz P3 system. My current system is the fastest system I have owned.

I'm an entering the Dark Side mainly for scientific reasons. I know that my current system will not allow me to enjoy the Dark Side fully. Maybe if the world doesn't actually end on 12-21-2012, I might be able to buy a new computer sometime in 2013 that will allow me to better enjoy the Dark Side. For now, I am visiting for scientific reasons.
