RAF Thorpe Abbotts

Didn't quite escape.
Just in case anyone wants somewhere appropriate to Panther into using their new Accu-Sim "Heaven Sent", I was asked to look at doing a representation of RAF Thorpe Abbotts for FSX.

Home of the 100th Bombardment Group, "The Bloody Hundredth", RAF Thorpe Abbotts was home to that unit throughout its operational use. When the 100th BG left, Thorpe Abbotts was returned to agriculture and very little now remains other than some scattered bits of concrete.

One thing of major import that remains, however, is that the tower is now home to the 100th Bombardment Group's museum, which can be found at http://www.100bgmus.org.uk.

However... Here's one to start a debate. Where, in the UK, were parts of the film 12 O'Clock High, starring Gregory Peck as General Frank Savage, filmed? Was it RAF Barford St John as some sources suggest, or RAF Thurleigh, as others suggest?

Barford St John was a pure RAF station and, having done some research, was most likely where 12 O'Clock High was actually filmed. However the film was based on the life and operations of the 306th Bombardment Group (Heavy), who were based at RAF Thurleigh.

Thurleigh survived the war, passing through the hands of the RAE, DERA and QinetiQ, latterly as "Bedford Thurleigh" and finally just "Bedford". It is no longer used as an airfield but apparently some QinetiQ staff are still there, shutting down the final bits of test and instrumentation prior to final and imminent closure.
