Side trivia about Helgoland. Did you know that in WWII, the Germans had a U-Boot bunker / base there? Huge structure that could hold 6 standard subs in its bomb proof chambers, (2 rows, 4 on one side, 2 on another). In the after war cleanup, they paid the tremendous amount to have the bunker totally removed. You cannot find it now. Its all gone. This was a huge undertaking. Even the bombed out pens in Germany are still there, so huge that they just left them there. (Destruction proof also meant, how do you get rid of it?)

The Allies were constantly bombing that bunker on Helgoland, thus they had many civillian bunkers on the Island to hide in during all the many raids. I think they spent the war just repairing things from the attacks. The Allies wanted the Island because they could then track bombing run launches leaving Germany. (I guess they would fly some northerly routes out over their channel north of Germany?)
