Kicked in the nadds......

( a backup story)

Have you ever been, u no kicked so hard u can taste it?

a couple of weeks ago after gaining a "new" 500 Gb USB drive I diced that I no longer needed a smaller partition I had on my normal HDD and was going to give all remaining space back to the HDD C: partition.

my first mistake:

I already had a 340gb USB drive that contained my backups that was running out so I swapped everything to the "new" 500gb drive

I then put all my zips on the 340 from the other partition on the HDD these are not in any type of organization just dropped in there.

my Second Mistake

I then started to remove the H: partition from the HDD to make the free space available to C: every thing was going great I thought durring the process I guess my HDD crashed cuz it said there was a error during the process and i needed to reboot when I rebooted the machine wouldn't go past D: drive in the boot process wouldnt let me in safe mode ecept the bios yeah it would but wasnt much I could do there

I searched for a program that would boot the system from the D: and let me see the C: drive well there wasn't much to see on the c: drive so I figured go ahead and reformat.

Well the new 500GB with my backups had a copy of my XP disk on it so I decided to use that as my install smart thinkin huh? NO! third mistake but i will get back to that

The windows install didn't take.

I tried with my regular windows disk it never took so, I have ordered and received my new HDD installed and now its going again plug in the "new" 500gb with my backups and yes u guessed it everything is gone gone gone well except for the "failed" windows install......

the ones that hurt the worst are my fsds files and of course I told the wifie that all of her piccys from the diggy camera would be fine on my backup--------- Wrong

I still have the zips N stuff "downloaded stuff" on the 340 drive so all is not lost, but 10-15 years of stuff I had done is on the "ethernet"

I'm trying to recover some of the stuff with a recovery software but i don't have much hope....

Well now that have bored you with my *** story
time to start over..........................

Man sorry to hear. That is my biggest fear is losing the wife's piccie collection :a1089:

Have you told the wife bout her piccies yet? If not you may want to wear a cup for a few days cause ya may get kicked again.

I'm sorry to hear about it. I'm sure there are programs or services out there can restore what you lost. I got a 250 gig Iomega but I don't 100 percent trust anything, I'm looking to write all my backups to DVD.

Yo CT;

Sorry to hear this Bro .... we all feel your pain.
- 2 weeks ago I lost a 120GB external with about 90GB on it ... the motor is toasted.

I've got a possible solution fer ya .... gimme a call tonight and I'll shoot ya a program ISO over Skype that just might save yer butt (and nadds).

If it don't work .... you can always escape up here to Kanadastan .... and live in a tent in the yard behind my "beer-can bunker".

PS: Obio has resumed bombing me daily with paper bags full of Chihuahua & Ferret poop.
GEEZ ... he's been doing this for the past 3 summers! ... you'd think he'd forgive me for saying that "ferret" is just a fancy-a$$ name fer a WEASEL!!!
.... but my lawn is really green now!!!

I use a program call Glary undelete,it's free and seems to work well for me.I have my stuff backed up in 3 different places and both of my laptop hard drives imaged on a 500 gig external.Good luck.

Errr...ummm...Bro Dirt...i've lost two external drive motors over the past 3 years. I just cracked the cases of the externals and extracted the HDD's for internal installations inside my desktop's case They're still goin' strong. Because they're always on, the integrated power supply units of externals burn out long before the hard drives themselves. The drives are simply the same as what you have installed internally, so you connect them as you would any internal HDD. And with my new 1 TB drive, i now have an insane collection of 5 large internal drives, plus a 700 GB external and still 4 empty drive bays waiting....what can i say, i'm a cyber packrat...LOL

Sorry to hear of your troubles Cap't. Good luck in getting it sorted out, got some of your fsds stuff here at the shipyard if'n ya wannit.

Yo DJ;

Not quite that simple in this instance. This HD was running nakid (no external case) using an IDE comm adapter plug (to USB) and a separate external power supply. Tried the rig on another HD & everything worked fine. The internal motor (spinning the platter) on the HD is NFG.

Similar to this unit: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276554&sku=ULT40112

These are great for quick-connecting any HD or optical drive. I've used it mainly to reformat HD's that have been whacked by Trojan-Droppers that will not allow the o/s to be reinstalled at position 0. This way I can just pop the offending HD out, slave it to another PC & then reformat, reinstall & reload the o/s.

I've tried pretty much everything in my bag of tricks including: talking nice to it, swearing at it ... even tried getting it drunk & offered to get it laid ... all to no avail .... think I might send it to my ex wife .... as both are equally useful.

Fortunately there was very little data on it of any real value. (no CFS2 files)

Thanks for the condolences and stuff, like i said I only really lost crap that I had done but i just need to wade thro all the zip files to to rebuild my flight sim stuff it will just take time..

HAA HAA the ole lady looks at me a little differant now that I lost the piccys from the diggy tho.

I'm using EASEUS Data recovery pro software to try to get the piccys back It says rite now i still have like "170 hours" until the operation is done this is the second time trying my system rebooted on me during the night I guess a M$ update or something.......

Dirty I need to reinstall skype LOL

Oh Cap'n...

I hate to mention this NOW...

But any time *I* had to use a recovery program, I unplugged the comp from internet access and turned off all screen savers, updaters, antivirus / firewall / antimalware stuff etc until the files got retrieved....

It made things run a little smoother. :salute:

Bearcat, not to divert this thread from the Captain's predicament but I'd like some more guidance on busting open an external HD to try and at least salvage the contents off the drive. I have a non-functioning WD 160GB external with perfectly good installs of FS2002 and CFS2 if I could just get at 'em.

Dirty, i understand now that you meant the drive's spinner, not its power unit. BTW, that item from TD is the same one i'm using to connect my 700 gig "external" HDD after removing it from the case. Got it "top-mounted" on 3.5" drive brackets and "fastened" atop my COOLER MASTER HAF 932 tower, nearly directly over the top 240mm exhaust fan for realtime cooling.

Tarps, extracting the HDD's from a dead case is really no more complicated than opening oysters with a knife. Just remove the desk stand or foot from the case and carefully pry it open. Don't worry about damaging the case --dead is dead -- just try not to shake up or bang the drive inside too much. Once you have the case opened its just a matter of disconnecting the HDD from its internal power and IDE connectors. You can then mount it in your tower case or use the device that Dirt linked to above for connection.

Thanks Bearcat, I'm going to crack it open sometime this week and see if I can get it to work. Also thanks to Dirtman for the TigerDirect link in case I need one of those gadgets. :)

Happy Ending

.
I just received an email from Cap't T and the good news is:

He bought the IDE to USB adapter and has successfully recovered ALL the files on his harddrive.

nadds feel a little better

just a little update....... ok the c drive files weren't lost it seems i guess just the boot sector was wiped cuz i got the gadget the Mr Dirty suggested and all is there save some ruined img files. oh and far as the wifie pickys they were on a HDD that had put them on, not on the backup drive that I wiped out i still had to use the recover software to get um but they are back! she still is giving my the evil eye and stuff but i think its cuz she just don't like me that much anyway :salute:
