He's been in similar predicaments before, but I'm sure he's getting much closer now to having to actually closeup due to diminishing sales.

I wish I could help him but I have already purchased all the Mesh he has for FSX.

I think a lot of external changes in how mesh is being done has hurt him as well. Many products now come with mesh supplied, making custom mesh yourself has gotten a bit easier and more are doing their own thing around areas they normally fly. . .and, as you said, you've purchased everything he has for FSX, as have I. It could be that he has gotten to a saturation point with his product in a sense. At any rate, his sales are nowhere near what they used to be.

I too wish I could help him more. I have purchased all of the FSX stuff. I have been watching the ATAP stuff, but if I read it properly it's a work in progress and not finished yet.

I got the same notice. As I read it, he's saying that he can no longer afford to develop for Flight Simulator full-time. A lot of developers are in that situation, I imagine. Or never got out of it. Existing products will continue to be available, but new products will be slow in coming.

Saturation might be part of the reason. Another is that the default mesh, for many parts of the world, is much better in FSX than it was in previous versions. If you don't fly outside of the U.S. and Europe -- and I know a lot of people do fly outside, including myself -- it may not be obvious that you need third-party mesh, because the default mesh is already pretty good. And, as mentioned, there's more freeware mesh now (e.g., Holgermesh for all of Australia) than there was four years ago.

All of the above is true re saturation. I too bought his product under his 3 year plan. However I do not use any in FSX as I went to FSGlobal instead.
Another aspect is of course FS2004 is 7 years old now and FSX approaching 4 years old. There cannot be many new people coming into the genre - just try finding them on the shelves. It is a diminishing market and nothing lasts for ever sadly.

This is so sad to hear.

I used his freeware mesh in FS9, and now have the payware mesh in FSX.

But what to do? Buy something I will never use (mesh in places I never fly)?

I tell you what I would buy, northern Wisconsin, ala Orbx. Maybe it's time for Justin to move on, to expand? Obviously he has talent, maybe he just needs to go in another direction?

I don't mean to offend anyone, much less Justin.

It'd be a real shame if he had to close shop. I think the USA mesh is one of the best addons for FSX period. It adds more to my experience than REX even. It is definitely up there with UTX, FTX, GEX, and REX as must-haves for FSX.

The markets' moved on. It's no longer about mesh, it's about integrated packages such as FTX. Combining landclass, mesh, and revised textures and autogen is the way to go, it seems.

There also remains the problem with mesh in FSX in that higher detail mesh just reveals the `flat` runways in FSX to be the false representation they are. You cannot have realistic mesh, and a plateau-mounted airport and runway. Certainly for me it's why i tend to stick with the default mesh (where the quality is high enough)

IIRC he has a project to fix the airports in his mesh that look wrong, if he came up with a payware tool to automate or semi-automate the process he could perhaps return focus to mesh products. If he sold it only as part of his mesh product range then, well, there's a business opportunity.

Other than that, I don't see why normal market forces should not apply. It's a business, not a charity. Not denigrating the work or the man, but our relationship with the vendor is purely commercial. Unless there are some out there who want to have his babies. If FS Genesis makes better product, better suited product or does a better job of marketing that product they will succeed. If not they fail as have many other companies in the current economic climate.

The airport plateaus were my main reason for moving away from FS Gensis mesh - ruined the illusion, and the default mesh in the U.S. is good enough that the gains from the custom package didn't seem to be worth the downside of the plateaus.

Re: his fix, as I understand it, he's working through the problem airports by hand, which is admirable but also slow and time-consuming. If an automated fix was available I'd look at it, but at the moment there's none for the areas I mostly fly in.

And yes, I spend more and more of my time in FTX and other custom areas, so for that reason too I'm mostly an ex-customer, unfortunately.
