Posted over at the M4T forum om Saturday June 12:

From a French newspaper today...

The French naval authorities report:

"A Focke-Wulf 190, German fighter from the Second World War who was to participate tomorrow in the Centennial of Naval Aviation airshow in Hyères (Var), crashed at sea today, but the pilot was uninjured.

The accident, which we do not know the origin, occurred at about 2:50 p.m. in the Bay of Hyères, 150 meters from the beach. The pilot, a French 63 years old whose identity was not released, returned to shore on his own after having managed to get out of the cockpit.

Unhurt, he was nevertheless supported by rescuers of the Naval Air Palyvestre base and placed under observation at the military hospital."

Amazing how quick the news popped up on this yesterday, within the warbird-related forums. The Flugwerk 190 that ditched, was F-AZZJ, the one that has been the star of many European airshows over the past year. A terribly sad event, though it was great to know just as the news came up, that the pilot, Marc "Leon" Mathis, was just fine. It will be interesting to learn of its condition following its recovery, and the analysis on what caused the engine to lose power in the first place, since I know many Flugwerk 190 owners are a bit on edge to find out.

What a shame, such a beautiful aircraft! At least the pilot is fine.

Heard about it a couple of hours ago. Wasn't the owner Christophe Jacquard or so ? I believe he also had a Spitfire which has been converted to a normal prop (from a contraprop) quite recently.

Sad to hear :(, I also have some pictures of a Flugwerk Fw-190. Lovely airplane, great and distinctive sound too. Reminds me of flying your Fw-190 in FSX Matthias :wavey:...ah, the good old days of FSX...;). Boy, do I miss my good old 'Hundert Neunzig' (and the Albatros, Catalina, Twotter, F-16,...)...

Nice photos Joris!

The owner of that FW190 is indeed Christophe Jacquard, and this is his Spitfire:

Ah, that's a bird I've seen before :)...in the colours of the RAF's No. 110 'Hyderabad' Squadron. Thanks, Ferry :)!

Really saddened to hear about the Flugwerk crashes. Loved these birds. How many has Flugwerk built so far, I wonder ?

Lokking at the Flug Werk site I'd say at least four, of which one is a 'longnose' or FW-190-9/N.

:)

One of the Flug Werke FW-190s are on their way to NZ (the prototype I understand) - coincidentially the owner of the NZ FW-190 also owns a Mark 14 Spitfire (under rebuild). Lets hope the engine issue is a one-off.

My bad...all I did was looking it up on the internet, as I thought there was only one 'Hyderabad' squadron in the RAF. Thanks for correcting me :). Corrected it in the captions in my Flickr photostream, too.
