Fatal Error message on FSX launch...need some help

This just started happening and not sure why:

I boot up FSX and get "a fatal error has occurred" dialog box.

I deleted the cfg files and am able to get to the settings menu but as soon as i try free flight up comes the fatal error screen.

I've deleted the logbook thinking that may be the problem but no joy there either.

I've tried searching the web but I get little info other than deleting the cfg file or the prefetch file (which I tried as well to no effect)

I'm running XP and the sim worked fine yesterday. No recent add-ons or programs have been installed either.

I'm at a loss here. Any suggestions?

Ah, the old fatal error... - A reoccuring accomplice of mine.....:angryfir:

Mine started when I first installed Hardrive No.2 to put "Media" onto. This included all my add-on scenery etc, I did this to free up some space on the OS. My fatal errors mainly come up DURING free-flight as I'm on either the ground waiting to take off or after landing. In free flight the fatal error is directly linked to the pop-up menu bar that is activated by right clicking. When the cursor is moved over the options on the pop-up menu, or alternatively the top menu bar, this triggers the fatal error. The fatal error on the starting screen also really p***es me off and shows its ugly head around once out of every five times I start.

SOLUTIONS............. None as such. I've had a family friend, who is effectively an FS Guru, help to rid my demons as has been unsuccesful. The problem is unfortunatly unavoidable and you will just have to reload FSX until it starts up properly.
The fatal error in free-flight is perhaps even more annoying. The best way to avoid it is either don't use the pop-up menu bar or the top one; just use the keyboard shorthcuts, (this will guarantee not errors) or do use the menu, but dont ever put the cursor over it. Alternatively just browse up and down the menu with the arrows on the keypad. This majorly reduces the chance of getting a fatal error but does not completely stop them. This is way I use it and I'm now so used to doing this I couldn't do anything else.

The OS has absolutly no baring on this problem as I have Vista HP (and that's another story...) and I get fatal errors by-the-barrel full.

Cheers,

Hey G,

Could it be that something changed through M$ Windows update? I had that happen to me once. Try looking for error messages in the eventviewer. Go to the start menu, select run, type in evetvwr, and therein go to the application section. Normally you should find error messages there. They usually mention the culprit of the fatal error.

Could you check that and come back with the results please? That would make assessing this error a bit easier!

Good luck!

I looked in the event viewer and the only thing listed was a problem with javaw.exe

I went to java and re-installed the java console but still got the fatal error window. The funny thing is there are no listings in the event viewer for FSX. nada, zip, none.

I've even used the repair function on the main FSX disc but no joy.

After sill more searching on the web this seems to be a common problem but one with no solution. It's seems strange more folks haven't responded to my thread. I certainly can't be the only one that has experienced this based on what I've seen.....

Hmmmm, lots of views on this topic but little in the way of replies.....

I'm also experiencing another issue with javaw.exe. Web searching also shows this to be another problem child. Indications seem to be it may have to do with jre 6.20 so I uninstalled 6.20 and reverted to 6.18. Unfortunately FSX still gives the fatal error on launch but now at least it seems the messages on java have stopped.

I have a previous install of FSX on my second HD and I can run this one fine (it used to be the original install before I got a second HD that became the primary...long story..)

However, my main FSX program is still CTD'ing and giving a fata error.

So, no one has any ideas?

I would recommend doing a system restore to when you know it worked. That's normally been my best route out of weirdness. If there were any windows updates that applied themselves and you had system restore turned on it would create a restore point prior to the upgrade.

In theory that should return your system to how it was before.

System restore is under All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools

Hi Folks

Lateral-G
First thing to do whenever FSX crashes, (or any application),
is look at your Event Viewer - Application Log.

You'll find at least one error report
every time FSX CTDs,
which will detail the underlying cause.

It'll also contain a link to MS's Help & Support Centre,
which, more often than not,
contains a solution to the specific event.

N.B.
FSX crashing may be a SYMPTOM,
of an underlying Operating System issue
rather than an inherent cause.

Paul,

I checked the event viewer log and the are no links to MS's help and support center. In fact nothing has been addressed ever by MS on this issue. There is plenty of references to the 'fatal error' on the web but no known solution. The closest thing I could find was a reference to Phil Taylor mentioning that it might be addressed in the Acceleration/SP2 patch but nothing more on it. Since the FSX team has been disbanded I'm sure MS could give a whit about it now.

The event viewer does list some files that it would send to MS if I reported the problem. I don't have them all in front of me now but I know two of them were the FSX cfg file and the scenery cfg file. There was one dat file and a DLL file. They were all in the folder where the FSX cfg file resides normally. I removed the files and tried to start FSX thinking that FSX would re-build them (which it did) but I still got the fatal error message.

So right now I'm at a dead end in trying to figure this problem out...........

Hi Folks

I checked the event viewer log
and the are no links to MS's help and support center.
Lateral-G -

Click -
Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer

Click on Application
It'll display the log of Application Error Records.

Double-clicking any event
will display that events details.

Post the content of your 2 most recent FSX events.

AIUI on all OS's -
Every event type contains a link in the DESCRIPTION box -
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
To the casual observer
it looks generic to every event,
but actually passes the relevant parameters.

If there are no FSX errors,
post the content of the javaw.exe error description,
as it might be addon related.

Post your exe.xml and dll.xml, (both wrapped in code tags).

Also maximise your Application log Event Viewer window.
Take a screenie and attach it.

Paul,

Event 1:

Event 2

event2.jpg

This the link to MS website for help and support and what they say:

MSlink.jpg

You'll notice there is no known fix....

Here's the javaw.exe event log:

javaevent.jpg

and what MS help has to say about it:

MSlinkrejava.jpg

Lastly here's my event viewer:

eventviewer.jpg

As far as posting the exe.xml and dll.xml I am not sure how to go about posting that info. If you could provide more detail I would be happy to do it.

Hi Folks

Lateral-G -
EDIT - Was busy with IRL/other matters. :salute:

Possibly the likely cause,
(from pers exp running my lowly spec'd PC's during fsx betas).

Do you have ANY of the following entries in your fsx.CFG ?
Code:
[SCENERY]
// Alert missing objects
MissingLibraryAlert=1

// Alert missing textures
ShowMissingTextureAlert=1
Code:
[Debug]
// Report mission relted errors
ReportLoadErrors=1 //0
If so,
first some background -

Crashes generate error data.

Hung applications do not.

Hence the you receive an -
Event ID: 1002 == Error message that there was an unexpected or missing value.

Hanging applications -
Are most frequently caused by GUI elements timing out,
which then generates the hung app error.

When any application generates a GUI element,
e.g. modal dialog box, or modal child window,
it does so in the context of the Desktop Window Manager, (DWM).

When any application generates a GUI element,
the window focus is transferred to that GUI element,
and a message is added to the DWM queue.

If your FSX slider settings are too high,
FSX continues to catch up with rendering the viewport,
and re-aquires the window focus,
drawing over the now hidden GUI element.

The DWM is still waiting for your response to the GUI element.
After a certain time has expired, the DWM issues the hung app error.

Solution -
You could turn off those alerts
but that'd only be masking other FPS affecting issues.

The most appropriate & beneficial approach
would be to ensure your sliders are not set beyond your PC's capabilities,
i.e.
That your FPS variance is not exceeding 5%
Personally I aim for less than 1% variance.

Modify your TextInfo data, (SHIFT+Z), displayed fields by tweaking your fsx.CFG.
See FSDeveloper - Wiki - Problem Resolving (FSX) - Assessing Performance in FSX(A)

Not sure if this might also work -
I'm guessing when a GUI element is generated
it'll force an FSX pause, thus highlighting the dialog occurrence.

In your fsx.cfg, try setting -
Code:
[USERINTERFACE]
PAUSE_ON_LOST_FOCUS=1
I've some other questions regarding your event log entries,
but'll wait till you've responded to/tried the above.

Paul,

Unfortunately that didn't help.

Do you have ANY of the following entries in your fsx.CFG ?

Those entries are not in my CFG settings.
