New in the ETO ...486th Campaign

Wow

Really big. 29 missions and 4 complete aircrafts included. 35.2 MB

Someone has worked a lot and had also a lot of fun making them. Who´s the author of such a work?

The package includes "CFSIIEurope release 1" by Steve McClelland Copyright 2001 wich "Adds most of CFS1 fields to Germany-France-Belguim-Netherlands-Austra-Switzerland. Also adds 7th NJG fields. Also adds roads, highways, raillines to all of France-Spain-Portugal-Germany-Austria-Switzerland-Denmark-Italy."

My ETO install with Sanders coastlines, roads and rivers and Achim and Gari´s bases will probably clash with CFS1 airbases and this roads-raillines. I would need a new tweaked ETO install, airbases.dat included.

Another thing that can be improved, is that it has in the same bag an Me-262, a P51-D, a FW190 A2 and a Me-109 E4. In December 1943 (mission 1) you´d need a time machine to have the last two of those airplanes flying with a P51. In 1945 (mission 25) the same would occur for a Stuka. But, who said all has to be historically accurate! In the end this is about having fun!!!

I recomend ussing Morten Krogstad mk_cfs2_util.exe CFS2 aircraft and Mission utility.
Ver 2.0 - September 2004 to locate the needed aircraft for each mission (many more than the 4 included in the package) and/or to be able to replace them (although I think it´s not very wise without knowing the exact behavior of the original aircrafts and how and when they appear)

Cheers, Discus

Discus and others,

Now that I cleared a few projects out of the way, I've spent the last couple of days taking a real close look at this campaign. The author is 486_Col_Wolf. Whomever it is has the basics of spawning and mission building, so that's an impressive start.

That being said, I took a long look at it and worked on various things such as country allegiance (changing it to USAAF instead of USN) and working on aircraft choices.

For example, I went through and researched the 486th Fighter Squadron (part of the 352nd Fighter Group - better known as the "Blue-nosed B*stards") This fighter group used P-47s until April of 1944, then switched to the P-51b Mustang in April, followed by a transition to the P-51d sometime around July or August. In addition, they moved from Bodney to Asch (Y-29) in December of 1944, followed by a hop to Chievres, Belgium, in January of 1945, before moving back to Bondey in April of 1945. These changes have been reflected in my work thus far.

The 486th Fighter Squadron was also involved in the first "Frantic" mission performed by the 8th Air Force, a mission I covered in my campaign.

Because the CFS1 runways and Achim's bases have the exact same IDs, I simply utilized Achim's bases for these missions using my layout files to populate the bases.

Also, I've eliminated the use of CFS1 objects, and, as Discus mentioned, began to work on more appropriate aircraft choices, include various Bf-109 "G" and "K" models, along with Fw-190 "A" and "D" models, in addition to the Me-262. On the Allied side, I also used the P-38 "H" and "J" Lightnings, together with the FDG P-51b, and the FDG B-17. The B-24 Liberator and B-25 Mitchell have been kept from his original work, but I'm leaning toward using the B-26 or A-20 as a replacement for the Mitchell, because the B-25 was not used much by the USAAF in the ETO, for reasons unclear to me.

Infrastructure improvements have also included things like refineries, aircraft factories, rail yards, munitions factories, and the inclusion of Ettico's EuroTargets where appropriate.

I'm not putting a date on this, but so far it's coming along well.

Thanks

Thanks Rami. I´ve been away on vacation (It´s summer here in the southern hemisphere) for two weeks and have been trying to catch up with all that has been going around in CFS2. Wow! How lucky we, CFS2 simmers, we are to have all of you who not only enjoy this simm but also have the knowledge and can dedicate enough time to improve this great historical sim.

Thanks to every one here at SOH!:applause::applause::applause::applause::applause:

One mission down...

The final process has begun...

(Original)

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - The swallow's nest
"summary_string"=Attack the ME-262 Base at Plantlunne
"objective_string"=We have the Luftwaffe on the ropes. Mop up the last reamining ME-262 base in this area.
"intelligence_string"=P-38s from Denain will assist in the grond attack. Some old 109 leftovers might be in the area and AA is expected to be light.

(Revised)

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - The swallow's nest
"summary_string"=Listen up! Today, we're going to attack one of the few remaining Luftwaffe airfields known to house the Messerschmitt 262 jet fighter. This aircraft is much faster than our own Mustangs, so you'll want to attack them when they're maneuvering, landing, or taking off. Good luck!
"objective_string"=Following the reversal of the Ardennes Offensive, German forces, especially the Luftwaffe, were on the ropes. Fuel and other materials were critically short, but when the Luftwaffe could get airborne, their late piston-engined fighters and the Me-262 were still a handful for Allied pilots, especially if they were flown by the few remaining "experten."
"intelligence_string"=Before reaching the field, P-38s from Denain will provide support for your strike. You've been given rockets and bombs along with your .50-cals. The Germans will likely try to scramble the 262s when they're alerted to your presence. If this happens, try to bounce them on the runway, but look out for any conventional fighters flying cover!

Continuing to plug away...

To all,

I've been pushing forward on this, here are a few previews...

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Raid on Chemnitz
"summary_string"=Listen up! Today, we'll be escorting B-17s to raid a munitions factory in Chemnitz, located near the Polish border. We don't expect much in the way of resistance to this raid, the end of the Third Reich is near.
"objective_string"=By the Spring of 1945, the Third Reich was barely hanging on, and most of its industries were either in shambles or overrun by the Allies. Aerodromes on the continent allowed fighter escorts to remain with the bombers all the way to the target & back, even to locations as far east as the Polish border.
"intelligence_string"=We'll rendezvous with the B-17s just before they cross the German border. The Luftwaffe is almost totally grounded from lack of fuel, but the chance of encountering any jets, Komets, or other exotics is higher given your proximity to Berlin. Good luck to you!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Attack on Nuremberg
"summary_string"=Attention, airmen! Today's mission is to escort the 359th Bomber Squadron as they attack the city of Nuremberg. We hope that these attacks on German cities represent the last act that'll bring Germany to its knees and put an end to this war!
"objective_string"=The Allied raids on the city of Nuremberg during January and February of 1945 effectively ended its industrial support to the German war machine. Before these attacks, Nuremberg was an important manufacturing center for tank engines, U-boats, and aircraft, the majority of it produced through slave labor.
"intelligence_string"=Though the Luftwaffe is in shambles, the Me-262 jet fighter is now operational. Pilots on previous raids have encountered it over German cities, so keep your eyes open. There are even rumors of an even faster aircraft with no tail, but this has not yet been confirmed.

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Back to Berlin
"summary_string"=Listen up! Today, we'll be escorting B-17s as they go after the big prize: Berlin. With Russian forces pressing Berlin from the east while the British and Americans overrun Germany from the west, there's little doubt of total Allied victory.
"objective_string"=The massive bombing raid on February 3rd, 1945 represeted the single biggest attack on the city of Berlin to that point. SHAEF wanted the city ruined in the same way that London was decimated by the Germans four years earlier.
"intelligence_string"=The Luftwaffe is in total ruins, but anti-aircraft batteries in and around the city are still operating at full strength. Intelligence has now confirmed the existance of German jet fighters, so be on the lookout for them.

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Legend of Y-29
"summary_string"=There's no evidence to support it, but Cpt. Meyer feels they Germans may be planning a surprise to begin the new year. Before we escort bombers to Berlin, we'll fly a short patrol over Asch, looking for any sign of Luftwaffe activity. Keep your eyes open!
"objective_string"=On January 1st, 1945, German forces launched a major offensive in the Ardennes, the same forests where they punched into France almost five years earlier. The legend of Y-29 was born on that day when P-51s of the 487th, along with P-47s flying cover, turned the tables on a formation of German Fw-190s and Bf-109s which were about to attack Asch aerodrome, known as Y-29. P-47s forming up to search for armor threw off the enemy's timing, and the P-51s, led by John Meyer, were able to take off & join the fray, and over a thirty-minute dogfight, twenty-two enemy fighters were brought down with only three Mustangs damaged.
"intelligence_string"=If your takeoff is uneventful, relieve the P-47s and fly a short patrol around Y-29. keeping an eye out for anything that looks suspicious. Luftwaffe fighters or bombers could come from virtually any direction or height, so DO NOT get fixated in one direction! If you do encounter German formations, rip into them and take down as many as you can!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Long road To Merseburg
"summary_string"=Listen up! This morning, we'll once again befriend heavies of the 359th Bomber Squadron. They will be attacking a synthetic fuel plant in Merseburg, deep inside Germany. You must make sure that the bombers are able to strike the facility and return safely, we need to keep the pressure on!
"objective_string"=Despite "Big Week" and the Oil Campaign over the summer, some German synthetic fuel plants remain in operation. These plants must be destroyed if we want to ground the Luftwaffe. A successful strike will go a long way toward those aims.
"intelligence_string"=In missions over Germany, some of our pilots have reported seeing incredibly fast fighters that lack propellers. For now, we are dismissing the reports as combat fatigue foo fighters. Nevertheless, look for anything suspicious, and ensure the bombers get home. Good luck!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Raid On Heinkel Flugzeugwerke
"summary_string"=Listen up! Today, we are going to escort B-17s to the Heinkel Flugzeugwerke in Rostock. This plant is located to the east of Berlin, so you must make every effort to conserve fuel. Make sure that the B-17s make it back to England in one piece!
"objective_string"=The Rostock-Warnemunde region housed both the Heinkel and Arado aircraft factories. Both plants produced aircraft used in significant numbers by the Luftwaffe, including the ubiquitous He-111, as well as the late-war Arado Ar-234 "Blitz" bomber.
"intelligence_string"=As you approach Rostock, be prepared for intense anti-aircraft fire, but German air activity in the region is unknown. If you approach from the sea, you might avoid immediate detection and clear the area in time. Do not let your guard lapse, however. Stay vigilant protecting the bombers!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Paris fighter sweep
"summary_string"=Listen up! In order for troops to liberate Paris, we must first ensure that we have air superiority. To this end, your group will fly a sweep over the city, with carte blanche to attack any Luftwaffe fighters and strafe the German-held aerodromes.
"objective_string"=The month of August, 1944 saw American & British forces break out of the Normandy pocket, moving toward Paris and the German border. Facing this, German forces began to evacuate aircraft as well as other materials from the city to save them from the Allies.
"intelligence_string"=As we fly over Paris, be aware that there are two major German-held aerodromes located just to the southwest of the city. Because German forces are intent on maintaining control of the city, be ready for fierce resistance from any remaining experten left within the Luftwaffe's ranks.

Here's a few more...

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Cherbourg raid
"summary_string"=Listen up! Our troops in Normandy are pushing on Cherbourg, and B-25 Mitchells are being sent to knock out the aerodrome at Cherbourg. We need to ensure that this mission is a success, so keep close to the B-25s and get them back home in one piece!
"objective_string"=In order to advance onto Paris, Allied forces first had to take Cherbourg, and its deep water port via the Cotentin peninsula. To take this critical city, any remaining Luftwaffe resistance needed to be eliminated, including those stationed at Cherbourg airfield.
"intelligence_string"=Because most of the air cover has been evacuated, you should not expect many German fighters over the city. However, the Germans are determined to maintain control, so be fully prepared for intense anti-aircraft fire. Good luck, and get these B-25s back home!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Coastal cutoff
"summary_string"=Good morning, airmen! Today we will escort B-25s flying a low level strike on a Belgian railyard. It's imperative that this be a successful attack, so you will be given additional fighter escorts. You must keep the Mitchells safe, and get them back home!
"objective_string"=Word from SHAEF has indicated that the date for Allied invasion is very soon, perhaps in as little as two weeks! All effort must focus on causing havoc to German communications, along with roads, rails, and other infrastructure which can be utilized for troop and supply transport.
"intelligence_string"=The Germans are no fools, and are aware that the impending invasion will come ashore somewhere in France or Belgium. Accordingly, they've placed an emphasis on protecting their communications, as well as supplies which they are stockpiling by rail, air, and sea. You should expect fierce resistance over the target area, but make sure the B-25s can get back home!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Raid on Lutzkendorf
"summary_string"=Listen up! Today, the 486th Fighter Squadron will be part of the huge aerial armada we are sending up to hit fuel facilities all over 'Festung Europa,' in an effort to bring Germany to her knees. This is a dangerous mission, and you must do your best to protect the bombers and bring them home!
"objective_string"=May 12th, 1944 saw 8th Air Force bombers attack major German fuel facilities all over Germany and Occupied Europe. Nearly 900 bombers, escorted by 700+ fighters, participated in these raids. This effort came at a high cost; 46 bombers along with 7 fighters were lost to enemy action and fire.
"intelligence_string"=German oil targets are typically heavily defended by thick anti-aircraft flak. Additionally, German fighters will certainly be airborne with all of the bombers that we're sending over the Third Reich. Be ready for anything!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Choo-choo go BOOM!
"summary_string"=Listen up, airmen! During today's mission, you will escort P-38 Lightnings as they destroy a train at a railyard located just northwest of Paris. Mop up any straggling train cars once the P-38 Lightnings have exhausted their ordinance, then ensure they can get back home!
"objective_string"=The rumors are persistent that the Allies are going to invade "Fortress Europe," somewhere along the French coastline, possibly in the Normandy sector. To clear the way, all Wehrmacht supply routes to the coast must be destroyed.
"intelligence_string"=Since Hitler considers a seaborne invasion to be highly unlikely, enemy air cover will likely be low. Only Bf-109s guard the French coastline; Fw-190s are occupied with attacking Allied bombers going into Germany. Additionally, anti-aircraft fire will be virtually non-existent, so ensure you do heavy damage!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - To Berlin and back
"summary_string"=Listen up, airmen! Today, we'll be escorting B-17s of the 359th Bomber Squadron as they raid Berlin. The objectives of the bombers will be the airfield at Templehof, & the Daimler-Benz assembly plant located to the south. You must make sure that the bombers get home alive!
"objective_string"=After the raids of 'Big Week,' Berlin was not hit with as much frequency by the Allies, but this did not exempt the city from being a target. Germany was forced to withhold considerable resources in order to defend the city, weakening conditions on the frontlines.
"intelligence_string"=Because Berlin is the capital of the Third Reich, it will be defended with heavy flak. You should also anticipate multiple waves of enemy fighters, many of which will be flown by the remaining experten left in the Luftwaffe's ranks.

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - "Big Week" begins
"summary_string"=Listen up! This morning we will escort B-17s of the 359th Bomber Squadron as they hit oil refineries in Hamburg. The oil refinery & docks are located to the south of the city, we'll leave the city itself for our British brethren who will use incendiaries.
"objective_string"=Today marks the beginning of what is being called "Big Week." This offensive will consist of a series of massive strikes centering on both German cities and infrastructure. No major city will be spared, including Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg.
"intelligence_string"=By filling the skies with our bombers and escorts, we hope that these major raids will help keep the Luftwaffe off-balance. However, the importance of these cities means that fighter cover along with anti-aircraft fire will likely be high. Ensure that our bombers stay safe, and good luck!

The last batch...

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Valentine for Hitler
"summary_string"=Listen up! Today, we'll fly escort for B-17s of the 359th Bomber Squadron as they strike a critically important petrochemical facility at Ludwigshafen. This plant is a major supplier of synthetic fuels as well as the gas used for extermination purposes in the death camps, and must be destroyed!
"objective_string"=Petrochemical plants such as Badische Anilin-und Soda-Fabric, known as BASF, were indispensable to Germany's war machine. Their main facility was based at Ludwigshafen. It was a major supplier of synthetic fuels along with the compound Zyclon-B, the same gas used in the concentration camps. It therefore became a high priority target for Allied bombers, who virtually leveled it.
"intelligence_string"=Since this is such a strategically important target, enemy aircraft cover is expected to be quite high, and flak should be thick. Be prepared for several waves of Luftwaffe fighters, ensure the B-17s get back in one piece!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Convoy hunt
"summary_string"=Listen up! This morning, we'll strafe a Wehrmacht supply convoy which is heading toward the French coastline. Given our impending spring objective of a full-strength seaborne invasion, we must do all we can do eliminate enemy stockpiles and all other significant resistance.
"objective_string"=In the months that Allied forces were building up toward the Normandy invasion, SHAEF concerned itself with ensuring German supplies did not reach strongholds that could be a threat to the invasion forces. This general directive included attacking vehicle convoys as well as virtually anything else of military value.
"intelligence_string"=P-38 Lightnings from West Malling will help in this Search and Destroy mission. Any German air cover should be fairly light since most of their fighters are in reserve for defense against Allied daylight bomber raids into Germany.

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Ball Bearing blowout
"summary_string"=Good morning, airmen! Today we will escort B-17s of the 358th Bomber Squadron as they attempt to knock out a ball bearing factory at Schweinfurt. This is a vital component of German industries, so make sure the bombers are able to attack it hard, we'd like to avoid a return trip!
"objective_string"=Into early 1944, both British & American bomber groups focused on disrupting German industry. A primary objective was destruction of ball bearing plants, needed for the building of aircraft, ships, and weapons. If these facilities suffered enough damage, the entire war machine of the Third Reich might grind to a halt.
"intelligence_string"=Over Schweinfurt, prepare for heavy anti-aircraft fire as well as determined resistance from enemy fighters. You must stick very close to the bombers and only break off to engage Luftwaffe fighters if they attack the bombers directly. Good luck!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Wilhelmshaven strike
"summary_string"=Attention, airmen! Today, you'll provide top cover for P-38 Lightnings performing a low-level attack on the port facilities at Wilhelmshaven. Make sure the Lightnings can strike their targets unmolested, we do not want to return to this area for a while! Good luck!
"objective_string"=Through 1943 and into 1944, Wilhelmshaven was a primary Allied bombing target. British leaders saw the facility as a major threat to Allied shipping in the North Atlantic, and asked SHAEF to help them in dealing with the problem of containing German U-boats.
"intelligence_string"=Approaching Wilheimshaven, anti-aircraft fire will depend on the amount of ships at anchor. If there are any destroyers in port, you will need to steer clear of them. Going in low and fast will help your cause. Make sure the P-38s can make their strike, and then they can assist you in dealing with any fighters!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Target: Bremen
"summary_string"=Listen up! B-17s of the 359th have asked for help in their attack on Bremen. You'll escort one wing of bombers that will hit the Focke-Wulf assembly plant, while other bombers will strike the shipyard located several miles to the northwest. P-38s will constitute the other escort, your goal is to keep the bombers safe!
"objective_string"=The variety of targets in Bremen, including an oil refinery, a rail yard, a steel mill, a shipyard, and the Focke-Wulf aircraft plant, placed it very high on the target list for Allied bomber raids. Bremen represented the end of the rope for P-47 fighter escort, whose pilots would risk running out of gas if they got entangled in lengthy dogfights while escorting the bombers.
"intelligence_string"=With Christmas behind us, all fighter pilots should now be prepared for more missions into the heart of the Third Reich. Because the Focke-Wulf plant is such a crucial component to Germany's defense, you should be ready for intense anti-aircraft fire as well as heavy fighter cover. Good luck!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Milk run
"summary_string"=Listen up! Today, we will escort P-38s assigned to take out a bridge on the Seine River. Over France, ensure you remain alert for enemy fighters, there are several bases in your sector, and the chance of intercept is high. Good luck!
"objective_string"=In the months preceding Operation Overlord, the USAAF flew many missions over Occupied France designed to soften up infrastructure to make any landings easier as well as disorganize the German defenses. The 9th Air Force was responsible for the majority of these attacks.
"intelligence_string"=This bridge over the Seine is in a relatively rural location, so the reasons why SHAEF wants it taken out are somewhat of a mystery. The Lightnings will destroy the bridge, you must keep any Luftwaffe fighters off their back and ensure that all of you get back home for Christmas!

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Festung Europa sweep
"summary_string"=Good morning! For today's mission, we'll be flying a fighter sweep over 'Festung Europa.' The goal is to draw German fighters up into combat and hack them out of the skies. Try to bring down at least a pair of enemy fighters on your sweep, we want to lessen the ability of the Luftwaffe to resist our future bombing raids.
"objective_string"=Because of the heavy losses incurred by our deep-penetration raids into Germany in the last several months, Allied fighters began overflying Occupied Europe on fighter sweeps designed to draw enemy fighters up and hack them from the skies, thereby establishing air superiority.
"intelligence_string"=Over Europe, the Germans are determined to keep control of the continent, so be ready for waves of enemy fighters and heavy flak if you wander a bit too close to an enemy-held aerodrome. Try to take down as many fighters as you can!
