Bf109g-8 - a first for CFS3

So far, there has been no Bf109g-8 photo-reconnaissance aircraft available for CFS3 - until now. This one flew with NAGr 13 from Chartres in France during the two and a half months of fighting in Normandy. Two aircraft from NAGr 13 in fact flew the first PR mission over the beaches on 6th June 1944.

That might give our Hobbit some ideas!

While in theory reconnaissance aircraft carried four-letter/figure codes as used on all non-fighter types (NAGr 13 was 2U+), Bf109 PR aircraft tended to use fighter-type numbers only.

Armed - it could take the standard Bf109g-6 armament fit, though in practice, it was rarely equipped that way. This one isn't... Wait and see!

Actually, many RAF PR aircraft kept their armament - it depended very much on the job in hand. But where the RAF had dedicated armed and unarmed variants, the Luftwaffe did not.

this one is unusual and a most welcome addition! This type was also used during the Southern France invasion in august 1944 (Operation Dragoon).

2./NAGr 13 was based at Cuers, they were equipped with 2 109G-8's for recon missions and 6 FW190A's to provide escort.

I couldn't find out whether this one was with 1. or 3./NAGr 13 at Chartres, or 2./NAGr at Cuers. But as NAGr 13 was the only PR group in France at the time (AFAIK) then it is a safe guess it's in there somewhere.

Photos and profiles of G-8s are like rocking horse sh!t.

One question about 109 in it's recon version.

Some of them were equipped for long range missions, they were able to fly up to Scappa Flow for exemple as some of them have been intercepted there.

Does anybody know more about this type?

Rene is the one with the extensive technical reference books - he might be able to help.

Well, if you find a photo of a g-8 in there, could you send me a scan? That would be v. helpful!

I might just be indeed. It sounds like a special series of G-4/R3 built by WNF between December 1942 and July 1943. Usually /R3 was equipped with one 300l drop tank but this version carried one below each wing. A similarly equipped G-6 was planned but never built and for the G-8 it wasn't even planned.

Now that might be interesting indeed. We don't have a G-4 model, but I did do a G-4 template based on the existing G-6. It won't pass a close examination, but it's better than a kick in the head. And more versatile that trying to convert the F-4.

Of course, any photos or further information would be welcome...

COOL, a camera equipped Bf 109.. Perfect I can take pictures as I wreck it!!!
GREAT IDEA...:icon_lol:

I can see the wings tear off, and the nose explode, and all the fun things,
That happen when I get in Nigels Birds..TOO COOL...

Bravo... On another Great Bird..:salute:

I shall trash Her with great care...:gameoff:

With all the wondeful Bf 109's from Nigel, I can wreck a different one every day, and not run out of birds to wreck...... I'm in Heaven!!!:jump:

Thanks For this Beautiful Bird..:applause:

Yes, it must be that one, thanks. If I remember well, one of the pilots that engaged one of them above Scappa Flow described the 109 with two drop tanks under the wings.

We'll need a new flight model to show the extra fuel, both for range and weight, because the drop tanks aren't droppable, don't weight the right amount, and contain no fuel. The m3d will accept only gun gondolas on these hardpoints (unless we manage to hack that bit) so in fact these tanks are really gunpods with no ammunition in them... But once we've got it sorted out, you'll get one!
