Co-Pilots To Be Ditched By Ryanair

What a laugh! O'Leary appears to be a well polished drunk amongst other things. If he feels he can't afford FO's in the right seat, perhaps he should consider selling the airline to someone who can. He may be the CEO of that company but it's painfully obvious he knows little to nothing about CRM, Flows, & Safety when it comes to operating an aircraft as complex as a jetliner.
 
While that man may be the CEO of an airline.. He obviously does not understand how flying work. That would be a potentially dangerous situation on takeoff as you usually have one pilot at the controls, and the other not flying managing the systems and reading the checklists.. I do not think that anyones "second job" should be a pilot. There is a reason they recieve the training they do, and their certifications. This could only lead to bad things, and thankfully no one will take him seriously on this. If I am not mistaken all commercial jets by type/rate certification are required to have at least 2 pilots.. if not 2 pilots and a FE in some cases. That is the by law mandated minimum.
 
Calm down guys, it's in the Daily Mail and henceforth will be ill informed and completely mis-interpreted.

Plus Ryanair are always talking rubbish to grab headlines. They always suggest sensationalist stories just to get their airline in the media, none of which ever happen in real life.

Some perspective is needed before everyone gets outraged.
 
Any aircraft that weighs over 12,500lbs requires a type rating and there are only a moderate number of complex turboprop or small jet transports which can be single pilot operated in IFR. Most aviation insurance groups won't even insure single pilot operation in complex types heavier than 12,500lbs anymore. Too many guys flying solo have crashed their Kingair's and Citations in bad weather or getting overwhelmed by an emergency. One of the affiliate companies I once worked for lost an MU-2 in IFR conditions where the pilot was by himself with 1 passenger trying to shoot an ILS down to minimums with a good crosswind. He tried to go around and ended up crashing into the trees off to the side of the runway. While there were no obvious mechanical issues found post crash, the state of the cockpit indicated the pilot had his hands full and likely became disoriented going into a slight bank to one side while managing the aircraft and systems. The NTSB ruled pilot error and contributing conditions in the final cause and stated had a second pilot been in the plane sharing the Flows/CRM, the accident may have been avoided.

There are a host of FAR's regarding Commercial & ATP Operations which would forbid single pilot operations of Commercial Airliners or Heavy Jets.

Oh I agree but I think we're covering that evenly. My issue is that yes, such is rubbish but the ill informed press and likewise public are getting the (pardon the pun), fly-by view of the story. It's not a good thing, especially with the accident rate going up right now as it is only to have a jackwagon like O'Leary add to the unneeded mayhem. If he is such a cheapskate, lord knows what other corner cutting he's already trying to get away with which may in fact cut into safety. American Airlines(I call them the Sky Nazis) flew MD-80's around with dangerous wiring issues for years which if an issue within that particular technical order had gone awry in flight, it would have killed people. But AA figures it was cheaper to pay the fine after getting caught rather than fix the aircraft properly earlier. That corner-cutting culture in the Airlines has killed too many people already and it needs to be reigned in with a sledgehammer, not a tack hammer.
 
Aren't these the guys that were supposedly going to charge passengers to use the aircraft restrooms, or was that some other idiotic attention-whore ??

If this kind of attention-grabbing is intentional on the part of Ryan Air, it certainly doesn't leave one with the idea of flying their airline !

I´m getting tired of these media tricks. Of course, newspapers wouldn´t have to publish these kind of jokes, but as aviation is a scary subject for large percentage of normal people and Leary is a wealthy, media-sexy person, these stories are published as they gather customers to web-sites and old-fashioned papers - to watch ads.

In the matter of fact, most of the 'news' are so rubbish that I haven´t followed any mainstream medium for over a year.

Exactly...and I come from there too! In fact O'Leary lives about 30 miles from here. Like him or loathe him...but he certainly knows how to use the media. No such thing as bad publicity. Only recently he was claiming to be planning on removing aircraft seating and having the passengers stand during their journey. :d
 
Yeah that stand up seating thing was another rediculous idea. Don't know if I would want to be manipulating the media in this way though. Unfortunately the public will always go for the lowest ticket prices which is why I guess they will not be taken out of business.
 
The only thing I got out of that article was a photo of three hotties. Perhaps that's what the intent of the article was. Ryanair has young hotties for flight attendants. Sure beats the last bunch of flights where there weren't ANY under the age of 50.
 
Unfortunately (my opinion) I've seen more serious suggestions that once the UAV remote systems and software get a bit more reliable (and UAV's accepted for more wisespread on airways operations) that the next step is to let the man on board become a "safety pilot" and normal ops be controlled from the ground. Suggestion was made for both military and civilian operations.
Remember flight engineers? I always though it was cheap insurance to have that third guy who could unstrap and go look around when needed along with his normal duties.
