When I fly CFS2; I most often fly...

I would be interested to know how chaps are using CFS2, my curiosity was roused by some of the responses to Rami's observation thread.
I think it might be interesting to run a poll, along the lines of

When I fly CFS2 I most often fly...

Here are some of the options I'd suggest,

  • Freeflight to test my latest plane
  • Freeflight to strafe and blast innocent GSL
  • Quick Combat to see how AI wing men handle my latest .air file tweak.
  • Quick Combat cos I just love furballing with those pesky AI
  • Single Mission historical re enactment
  • Single Mission historical fiction
  • Single Mission in builder mode, I like an extended quick combat with stuff on the ground.
  • Campaign Missions as player, I love following our heroic forefathers through historically accurate cfs2 campaigns combined with other media.
  • Campaign Missions as builder, I love following our heroic forefathers through other media and write historically accurate cfs2 campaigns to assist in my comprehension.
  • Multiplayer, I only ever fly CFS2 online, I am a member of a Squadron, we fly co-op team missions with clear objectives and rules of engagement.
  • Multiplayer, I have a group of buddies, we enjoy dogfighting in scenic places, no holds barred.
  • Multiplayer LAN, My brother and I have networked our gameing PCs , We use CFS2 as part of our war game.
  • Mission builder, I love making layouts of trees and adding them to GSL...
  • In my homebuilt full motion flight simulator
I'm sure some of you would have different ideas, indeed asking you fellas what options you might suggest might be more enlightening than an actual poll, so how about it.

Testing my ships to see what the polys are acting like.

QC to blast summat to little bits cos its been a bad day.

regards Collin:ernae:

I generally fly in the Mission Builder. I like to see the new scenery, ships, vehicles or aeroplanes that I download and the best place to sort them out and get them into the action is via the MB. I can make a new mission up almost as fast as using QC, but I can do it anywhere or any time in the CFS 2 world with any number of options from WW I to Vietnam.

I fly modified versions of Rami's missions from mission builder. I just change the player aircraft.

this is a good start,
the reason I'm curious?
well, it might help those who build CFS2 mods and addons if we had some idea what chaps are wanting.
Maybe I should think about a wish list thread instead of a poll!

I like the MB the best, building historic missions and then testing them using no fun rules. I also like doing historic scenery and testing it.Another thing I like to do is aerobatics, can`t stand to stay upright long. One of the best things is to watch the AI in action and try to fly formation with them as well as combat.Being a wingman to an AI is also alot of fun.

Campaign Missions as builder followed by campaign missions as player. After a year plus of building a campaign, I am now going to be flying someone else's campaign for a while.

Addons to order? Stay with the poll you might get a dancer to go with it

addons to order is not quite what I had in mind, developers should work to please themselves first and foremost, dancers however are quite welcome.

I also like to torp & nuke Collin's carriers .... cuz they blow up ... REAL GOOD!

BTW Collin; One nuke is enough to sink that bloody SS Ohio you made!

But seriously: I like to test new planes ... preferably jets; and try to find new ways to trick this "old Lady" (CFS2) into doing things she was never designed to do.

I also prefer to fly campaigns rather than single missions.

Dear Santa;

I would like 20+ jet planes, all built in multi LOD for Vietnam-4-CFS2 so I can get the framerates above 8-10 & get this bloody sim finished so I can upload it.

I have been a very good boy .... no matter what Collin, Rami & mariereid have told you!

When were you a good boy? You've been so BAD Santa won't even bring you coal to help keep you warm during those long winter months.

Simonu,

I can't say I do much "pleasure" flying. I've crossed WAY OVER the boundary into a tweaker. For me, it's fly-test, check the timing of a spawned flight...let's see how that factory complex looks from the air...what happens when I drop this bomb on target...does it spawn a trigger or event as it should...aw dammit, what am I doing wrong...uugghh...I can't believe I was that stupid...

You get the idea.

I not only 'get the idea,' I totally relate to it. I've got a mega amount of unfinished projects ('glue-sniffs') in various stages of completion. Due mainly to a short attention span.

Answer to the original question: the ship I'm working on at the time. ( since that's what I'm into right now)

For comic relief from frustrating projects, I pick a theater from my 7 installs, fly QC one side then the other vs 2 aces (or more) in 2D cockpit with no cheats on. It humbles you! and .. if you survive, bring her down on the nearest airfield.:bump:

So far it seems that most of us here, (or at least those prepared to contribute) are "developing" to some extent or other, even if in modesty calls it tinkering.
This draws me to to think that a most desirable "addon" would be a "tinkerer's handbook"
a compendium of all CFS2 related info, Ranging from simple stuff like how to make a second install of CFS2 to comlex issues like the different ways to re-organise the CFS2 file system.
Maybe what we need is a CFS2 tinkerers wiki.

Simon,

Making a "sticky" for such info has been suggested in the past. I did try it for a while and found that it got unmanageable and unread after just a short while. I found that for the forum, it was just fine and desirable to revisit the common questions from time to time so that new members and old memories could be reintroduced to some of the more common tweaks. The current thread on the "Country File" (Change of "First Nation" http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=42684) is a perfect example of a subject worth revisiting from time to time.

In my CFS 2 library I have a folder entitled "Tips" and in that I keep much of the corporate knowledge that I've copied from various threads over the years. Of course I've tried to organize it logically in order to retrieve needed info, but it is getting rather large and unwieldy.

I also keep a folder with prepared tips and supporting screen shots for the more esoteric items of CFS 2 which I post from time to time when needed. I think the last use of that was last week for the question about rotating layout files in the Mission Builder.

I'm with you in desiring a book of tweaks and tips for CFS 2. Perhaps after I retire I'll have time to try and put something together from my accumulated library. I hope that retirement is still a few years and one more deployment away yet, so it'll be a while before I can seriously consider it. I've often thought about how to organize such a tome, but the scope of topics is so broad and extensive that I'm not sure how one would go about it.

As I use the Mission Builder for close to 90% of my CFS 2 flying, Cody Coyote's tutorial on the Mission Builder is my de facto guide for just about everything relating to my use of CFS 2.

I'm with you Dave, a forum sticky is not the way to go,
keeping a repository of accumilated wisdom is a very good idea, although as you say the idea of organising it....bbbbrrrrrr shivers down the spine.

I just have a few links to other peoples good ideas and well organised tomes

I saw Jaxon here today, his site http://www.michael-reimer.com/CFS2/CFS2.html is great
cheers Jaxon.

SdC Had a great site too, my link doesn't work at the moment and some of the pages I had saved are broken. :-( Most of you are using Sander's european scenery, he gave himself serious brain ache trying to automate the production of coastlines.
Cheers Sander

Martin Wrights site is still up an running http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/
a great resource, He maintains an image of Bill Potvin's site were you can get the Cfo_Weather module that does more than just weather. developers from the earliest days of CFS2
Cheers Martin and Bill,

Manfred's SCASM site is also still available, http://www.scasm.de/doc/index.htm
it's technical stuff, but scasm is the bedrock of nearly all scenery production and model modding.
Cheers Manfred

Another well of modding wisdom Caleb Flerk http://www.cfgse.calebflerk.com/index.htm
Thanks Bill

All the MS flightsim SDKs are at http://files.fsnordic.net/Flight_Simulator/Miscellaneous/SDK/
none are CFS2 specific and some are pretty technical

the FS2002 Aircraft Container SDK , FS2002 Panel SDK FS2002 Special Effects SDK are worth keeping on hand

the FS2002 MDL Format SDK , FS2002MakeMDL SDK and the FX2002 GMax Scenery tute are more specialised, very useful info to aspiring modellers.

FS netpipes if you got more than one PC to play with...

***here I deleted a great deal of waffle***

How about PM for email exchange, any one with any snippets and tips they wish to share.
zip them up and send them I'll try and sort them and send them all back to subscribers.
