Help.. Game locking up

Heya guys..

Every since I reformatted my machine a few months ago, and put CFS2 back on, I have been plagued with this problem. Every time I switch views, cockpit to VC to outside, etc the game locks up tight.. It will also lock up in QC, but not so quickly. It takes several minutes to get sorted out, and sometimes I just have to shut the machine down.
I've had CFS2 on this machine before, but then it had a 6800GT card.
I've tried different hardware settings and screen res's to no avail. Something is not right here and I can't figer it out..
If you guys have any ideas I'd appriciate it :)

CFS1, FS2004 and Il-2 1946 work great.

Here's the basics on my machine;

XP Home SP3 32
2.4 AMD 64 Processor
Albatron K8T800 Main Board
250Gb HD NTFS 40% full
1.5 Gb RAM
GForce 7800 GS
NVIDIA Driver Version 196.21 Version 4.00.1381.9621
Samsung 24" SyncMaster Monitor
Saitek X52 Joystick; no SST software installed.

I might be dead wrong here, but could it be service pack 3? I've got a comparable machine (a tad slower) and vid card and I use XP sp2 with no probs at all. Is your video card a new one?

No, I have XP SP3 on mine and no lockups. It is not the SP3 doing it.
I have almost the same set up with 1 Gig of Vid RAM on an nVidia 9800GT card.
2.4Gig AMD duo core CPU.
4 Gigs of RAM with only 3.33 usable with XP.

I think this is a graphic card problem.

You might need to wipe the nvidia drivers completely off your machine ( including the registry, and delete the files themselves ), then download/reinstall the drivers.

Google would be your friend here, but others may have experience they could share. I had a similar problem a few years back. A clean driver reinstall solved the problem.

CFS2 actually taxes the graphics card pretty good.

Now that I think about it, I agree with Rhumbaflappy, DD. I've had problems with video cards in the past, and about the only thing to do is what he suggests to you.

Good luck!

P.s. Could just be my particular machine, or configuration, or both, but SP3 and I have never been friends. That's not to say it's not good to have, I'm sure it is from a security standpoint alone, if it causes you no problems.

Swede, what interface does graphics card have, AGP 8x or PCIex? If you're not sure, look at the slot in which its installed. Its either gonna be in an AGP slot or a PCIex 16 slot. I know that the Albatron K8T800 mobo solely uses an AGP video interface, but the GeForce 7800 GS is offered in AGP or PCIex options. That mobo is not the strongest host for a PCIex card. Its video bus may be too slow for the data throughput and this can cause lockups as the PCI bus and the video card fight for priority -- and Geforce cards can be real data bus hogs.

Hey Guys..

Well I ran CPU-Z and it says..
Graphic Interface;
Version... AGP version 3.0
Transfer Rate.... 8x
Max Supported... 8x
Side Band.... enabled

AGP 8x it is, looks like..

I kinda like to idea of wiping out all video drivers and registry entries.. If someone could help me out with the registry part.. :)

Re: XP-SP3

If anyone is having a problem with SP3. Please note that you need to install Netframework first. (from MS) Get all the updates from 1 thru 4 too.

Go to Windows Update. Select CUSTOM install ... not express and highlight any Netframework updates you can find. As they build upon each other; a few trips & d/l's from there & reboots will be required.

Dirty,
I'm really sorry but I have to correct your comment in the post above. All the .NET Framework versions before version 4 are totally independent of each other. If a program was developed to run under version 2, then (before version 4) version 2 was the only one under which it would run, even if version 3 or version 3.5 was installed. However, M$ moved the goal posts with version 4, which is now ... shock, horror ... backward compatible. In theory, version 4 is all you need, as it will supposedly run any programs developed to run under any of the previous versions. However, as a.NET developer myself, I wouldn't trust their statement without an awful lot of testing - especially when they say that the compatibility "can be broken",
hope that helps,
Ro

heya guys..
I'm caught up with .NET Framework, got 4.0 installed.
I have all the latest drivers, for motherboard and the 7800GT.

I'm beginning to think maybe CFS2 don't like the latest drivers, or rather the latest drivers don't like CFS2.. Why is it, that when in cockpit view frames go down to single digits, but when I go to no cockpit view frames go back up to 80fps or so..?

Il-2 1946 is more graphically intensive than CFS2 is and this machine runs it just fine..

As previously talked about, I would like to try starting over with the vid card driver, but I'm not sure what registry entries to delete or where all of them are..
I'll do the DxDiag thing if you think that will help..

Rollback

I have the feeling that if you rollback to SP2, your problems will be solved, video drivers aside. I'm no expert, however, but that has worked for me in the past.

Cheers

Thanks Ro for the info and a better explanation of NET Framework family ... I stand corrected.

:salute: :salute: :salute:

No need to be "sorry" when you are correct Bro. I appreciate the info as I'm not a software or I.T. Pro; just another PC user with an above-average interest.

XP SP3
& Me

A few years ago, I too had one hell of a time when I first tried to install SP3. (on a Dell GX110 P3) Three failed attempts had me scratching my head wondering what I was doing wrong. I was informed by someone (more knowledgeable than me) that I needed to first install NET Framework (unspecified level). Once installed, .... SP3 slipped right in without a whimper.

All I'm trying to do here is help the Bro's solve the same problems I once faced.

Thanks Again for the h/u

I'm beginning to think maybe CFS2 don't like the latest drivers, or rather the latest drivers don't like CFS2..

Did you get the video drivers from Microsoft or directly from NVIDIA?
I have seen problems with both! - but prefer the ones from NVIDIA

(- one of my PC's didn't like the drivers from AMD-ATI [9800 All-In-Wonder] in this case the MS drivers worked better!)

Why is it, that when in cockpit view frames go down to single digits, but when I go to no cockpit view frames go back up to 80fps or so..?

Does this happen to ALL PLANES or just one or a few?
- check this on a stock CFS2 plane & look for a difference.

I think Rami or Obio found a certain non-stock gauge was causing a similar f/r problem.

I'll do the dxdiag thing if you think that will help..

It takes 2 minutes .... what are you waiting for?

Is CFS2 still locking up or crashing now?
