firebomb

Anybody out there ever tried to make a firebomb effect? I am going to try to attach a snap of one of my efforts from a couple of years ago showing a Lancaster raid over some city. The effect was a modified phosphorous fire attached to the "small bomb" effect. It was OK but could be a lot better.

I used Nibbio's magnesium fire effect in a Lancaster raid on Stettin that I posted last year. It is an interactive mission timed to the commands of the bomb aimer and the navigator recorded from a real Lancaster mission.

Here are a few shots of the effect and the mission.

There was also a collaborative effort for a napalm effect recently led by Bearcat241 that might be what you're looking for. Look for it in the library under his name.

I have a "napalm" effect (Ghost Pony's I believe) that I tied to the dp of LW's Water tower type B that is commonly used for a fuel tank:

SW,

Sounds like a great idea for a little fireworks over enemy airfields.

To set it up, do you just replace Effects 3 line in the DP file of the water tower with the name of the effect?

[EFFECTS.0]
; System = dp_box_0
effect.0=30,LIBRARY,fx_dirtspray_l,
effect.1=60,LIBRARY,fx_smkpuff_s,
effect.2=80,LIBRARY,fx_dustcloud_m,
effect.3=100,LIBRARY,fx_twrwtr_l,, << Replace this line?

Yup... that's the way I did it, mine looks like:

[EFFECTS.0]
; System = dp_box_0
effect.0=30,LIBRARY,fx_dirtspray_l,
effect.1=60,LIBRARY,fx_smkpuff_s,
effect.2=80,LIBRARY,fx_dustcloud_m,
effect.3=100,BREAK,,
effect.4=100,LIBRARY,fx_gndexpl_f,

I left the original water tower effects in and added the line for Ghost Pony's napalm (which is a substitute effect for the stock 2000 lb bomb).

Everything you Guys have said can be consider pretty good Incidery effect but far as I know there are no real large night incindery effect to mimic the night raids on Germany and Japanense Cities during the War.

There is one CFS1 scenery available adaptable for CFS2 but non for the Far East. I hope someone would pickup this effect. I would really appreciate it very much.

I agree with miamieagle. My fires lasted over an hour and look OK if you have previous strings of bombers lighting it up before you get there as was done somewhat in my first pic. Usually I try to simulate a bomber stream with a few dozen planes getting there before me. But I think the trick is to change the color a bit and most importantly make them spread out over say a half hour's time to be much larger yet. As it is the fires are about two blocks wide. Another problem I saw which I doubt can be solved is that they are visible for about 20 miles at the most and the real fires were visible for a distance far greater.

There is another effect that might be worth chasing and that is what I think is called a "target marker" which I have heard called "burning grapes" falling from a (very brave) master navigator's plane which repeatedly marks the target with these falling flares throughout the raid. I assume they are in different colors. In the old films you can see them sometimes appearing like fragments of a burning plane, but I now think those are the target markers.

The British had a terrible time finding targets at night and knew it and developed methods to ease the effort on their crews (which never included the luxery of a copilot). But they saw it through to the point where their night attacks had effects similar to a nuclear attack and with crews that had ordinary training. If you set up a base near "the Wash" which is where the British bombers flew from you will find it is an easy hop to Koln in particular. The American fire attacks on Japan must have been done much different since I think it is 800 miles of open ocean from Guam to Japan.

By the way, getting a pic of the effect at night and still show any other detail has proven difficult.
