Full MR Marianas pack uploaded to SOH!

Tiller of Soil
Just finished putting together a zip for b-4 of the MR Marianas pack. MR Marianas Pack b-4 is Beta pack 3 plus all of the corrections and improvement from feedback plus the 4 American airfields on Saipan and other Saipan locations. I will attach the readme and zip to this post. I was going to wait a while before releasing Saipan but decided that now is a good a time as any as it looks as though the remaining Tinian airfields and facilities will take a bit longer than I anticipated.

I'll be looking forward to the same kind of helpful and productive feedback as on the last pack.

Hope its to everyone's liking.

PS: BTW I think doing a Japanese Marianas Airfield project would be a very worthwhile project. None of the Japanese airfields in the Marianas was very complicated or elaborate. Everything is there ready to be painted on and I can supply enough visuals and diagrams to get the job done in a respectable fashion. I was wondering if some fellow scenery maker would be interested in tackling such a project? I would do it myself- but it would have a very long lead time considering what I still have to finish up in the way of the late war American fields on Tinian and Iwo Jima. I think there is interest for such a project now and for some time into the near - medium term. Just thinkin' out loud!

Hi MR, I have tried downloading the zip 3 times and it fails at 4.00MB. Has anyone else experienced this? I would love to try it out, I have also tried my laptop with a cable connection,

Cheers

MR,
thanks very much for all the work you've put into this project. I'll be grabbing a copy as soon as I see it in the list, but it will be quite a while before I can do anything with it as I'm still in the throes of building my first PC. Once I can install CFS2, I may just have to make a PTO install for all your recent work, which will be a first as I've not had much interest in the PTO yet (being a rabid ETO fan).

I also like your idea of the Japanese version, and would have liked to take you up on the offer if I didn't have so much other stuff in progress right now. I almost responded to your other recent post about having someone to work with on other versions of the same fields, but didn't because of my lower level of interest in the PTO. I've been trying to become involved in airfield construction for the last year, but every time I try to make a start, something else leaps up to steal more of my time.

thanks again,
Ro

Yep - this just happened to me as well. Rats!

EDIT - I did just try to download it from MR's own site where I see the new link is actually to the old b-3 pack. Sorry MR - I'm not carping but I just want to warn you.

Hi watchdog22,

Hmmm. That is odd but nothing much surprises me any more! ;) Its a mystery!

It downloads OK for me.:icon29:

Usually if a file it too large for linking the SOH forum software will not even allow you to upload it.

However, check your PMs.

MR

EDITED: After reading BuV's post: forget checking your PMs:

Hi BuV

The link is working now. I had hosed it up slightly. I do not understnd why that first link is stopping at 4MB. Like I said its working fine for me. Oh, well.

Whoopee!

That second link did the link, MR.

And THANK YOU - which is what I should have said first in my original message of course. I obviously left my manners at the door this morning. . .

This is all really inspiring stuff and there a lot of very grateful people in the community who will enjoy it.

Many thanks
BuV

Awesome, Chris! Thanks again for all of your contributions to our shared hobby/interest! Our virtual PTO is orders of magnitude greater than it started out, thanks to your tireless efforts and generosity! :salute:

Spectacular again Chris! :salute:

Hey Kevin!

My story on those is they weren't added until after the war!:salute:

I have to admit that some of the scenery layouts in this release are bit less than inspired and a tad sketchy in places. The area around that mystery Marpi apron could use something and the shoreline around Charan-Kanoa is a bit "Whatever!" looking.

There are some new scenery objects in the works and I will try to update things before the final release.

Thanks for the screenies! I was noticing around that NE corner where the messing/berthing area slopes down to the sea that there seems to be some flattening going on that is not what I would expect.

No biggie. Just can't help but notice these little things. Its like looking at a picture of your kid and wondering why she has a nose ring that you don't recall being there the last time you saw her. ;)

Sorry about the nosering Chris - I didn't mean to deface your painting. I had turned Rhumba's Pacific coast flattens on again because I had been doing some flying in another part of the Pacific where it looks better with that layer activated.

I also have Pactex 2 textures. I think I will go back to stock water textures and maybe a mix of Pactex 1 and 2. I used to have Pactex 1 but didn't think the city textures looked right and in some areas there were small lakes, which should not have been there, dotted all over the landscape. It is difficult to find the right compromise in textures for the PTO as the latitude variation is so great.

In any case, your Marianas scenery looks pretty damn good to me.

Thanks again,
Kevin

Hehe, not a prob, Kevin. Like I said I am always noticing the pea under the mattress.

WRT texture sets, I tried playing with the water textures at one point- it was on my old computer- and what I wasn't real wild about was a tendency for them to sort of "tile up" at a relatively short distance. That is the only reason I have stuck with the stock water textures. I really like those textures you and others use- with the coral and rocks showing thru and I don't see any of that tiling up going on either. Maybe with this newer (but getting oldish) rig I should give those custom water textures another go.

I know what you mean about ground textures, too. I like PacTex1. For me I like that what I would describe as their "subtler" look. When redoing LC values I never use the city textures- at most I might use one of those cultivated fields with very scattered dwellings textures but never anything more than that. I prefer to add a few building and VTP1 ground polys as needed. However, there is always the exception that proves the rule- I've had a massive Manila Bay project on the back burner for a couple of years and I do use the downtown city LCs for parts of that.

Glad you like Saipan. I confess that I think it turned out pretty good, too. I've got to say though that I am running out of steam! Once Tinian is done I am going to take a break. As some one around here said the other day- I seem to be losing my "muse".:kilroy:

Until later,
Chris

Hi Mask,
Is this for Free!? This whole last set of yours just blows me away.

I can't find anything wacky in it...go fly in a virgin install of CFS2 and you might find wacky, or at least primitive. ;)

Really don't know what to say except that the effort you put into these really shows.

My last attempt in G2K was on the island string in the Peleliu area. Things were going pretty good, but at a point pffffffft...my file became garbage. Like Simonu said G2K will suffer no fools.

Nice job Mang,
Dv

Thanks oh great masked one for all of your hard work and precious efforts. But hey, this is probably going to be the stupidest question of all time. Was there a MR_Marianas_b-2.zip posted anywhere?

Hiya Dave, glad you are enjoying! Thanks for posting the screen shots!

WRT G2K, yes G2K can get a little what seems quirky - best method is to divide the project into lots of different sub-projects and save often.

Not a stupid question at all. If I were on the receiving end of this scenery I would be very confused and put off by it at times! ;)

There was actually a mr_marianas_b-1. b-1 was the original release of Guam and Rota. Then came mr_marianas_b-2 which very quickly became mr_marianas_b-2a. b-2 thru b-2a included various small tweaks to b-1 and added North Field Tinian to the mix. mr_marianas_b-3 included everything in b-2a and filled in all of the islands and airfields north of Saipan all the way to Chichi Jima: including facilities and airfields at Iwo Jima, Pagan Island, Haha Jima and Chichi Jima. But if you never installed any of them- 1 thru 3- that is fine. All you need is this latest b-4 version. B-4 adds tweaks to B-3 and the 4 American airfields on Saipan. The next release should be the final one and will just be named mr_marianas. mr_marianas will include everything in b-4 plus the remaining American airfield on Tinian- West Field, the harbor facilities on Tinian and a very down and dirty B-29 version of Iwo Jima.

Yeah, you're right. Sound advise for any computer related project. And that's just what I didn't do.Grrrrr

Well...I can't take it anymore. After seeing what you have accomplished I'm in the process of reloading G2K. If one really want lc and wc in an appropriate and convincing fashion it's the only way to go. Though this time I will start with smaller projects and work my way up from there.
Can't think of a better way to occupy my personal time. This sim been that way for years now. :mixedsmi:

Sounds good dvslats. Start with a nice simple island someplace.

WRT lc and wc, if one is very, very careful, as JP discovered, G2Kv4 will spit out lc and wc bgls. It will create and spit out the RAW files for you no problem. But under normal operating conditions it refuses to do the bgls. However, there is a little freeware program out there called EZLandclass that solves the problem. It imports the intial raw from G2Kv4 and from then on you can modify it all you want in EZLC. Like G2Kv4 EZLC also has a link to the simulator so you can place LC/WC values quite accurately. Also, with a proper image editor like Adobe Elements or PaintShopPro you can hand edit the RAW files using specially/easily created WC and LC color pallets.

Lots of possibilities.

Its a lot easier than you may think once you get a routine down.
