My "real" computer is dying, goodness knows why. The screen and sound suddenly cut out simultaneously. The drives continue working judging by the little red light, and the fans carry on too, but you can't do anything. I'd think it was the video card (which has never been quite right - superfluous to say that you shouldn't buy a 7600GS AGP, but don't anyway) but for the sound cutting off at the same time. It cuts out suddenly with no warning, and it doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing at the time. It isn't the screen, which I'm currently using with my still-lower-rated back-up computer. If anybody has any thoughts, please let me know!

All my CFS and SF stuff, needless to say, is on that computer, and while CFS will probably run on this one at low slider settings, I won't be able to do very much of any interest.

This weekend is probably going to be wasted trying various combinations of bits and pieces. But it looks as though I need a new computer, as we'd already discussed - except that at the moment, I can't afford one. So for the time being, anything I said I would do is on hold for at least the time being... Sorry, but it can't be helped.

Nigel,

Sorry to hear this and I hope you are able to get it sorted out before too long. We can't afford to lose excellent CFS3 talent at this point. Lot's of stuff in the works.

Good Luck,

Steve

i know how you feel.......

Hi Nigel, Thats a big pain in the rear end for you .... and all us who enjoy your work. hope you get it sorted asap. I know the feeling with the pennys bit as my graphic card is shutting gmax and 3ds max down when it feels like it and i have a strong suspicion its the graphic memory as when the those above programs shut down everything else carrys on working as if nothing had happened :gameoff:. but i am going to have to save up for a new probably a 1gb card. nvidia 275 gtx or a nvidia 285 gtx. :a1451:

Thinking of you mate,

Dave

Time for the missing man formation...

Very sorry to hear that Nigel :( ebay always has some good bargains on motherboards etc, might be worth a look?

Anyway, whatever happens keep posting!

Hey N-Dee,

Before you fire off the guns and play "taps",try this,(just in case you havent). Most people
would be amazed at what a good "cleaning" can do for the inside of your computer. Alot of
dust can build up on the components and internal ware and causes all kind of problems.

Unplug and let sit a bit before you do this. Use compressed air if you have,(I used a
vaccum but this proposes a static problem,) Take a look inside and see if there are
visible signs of accumulation.

Might not be your problem, but it sure sounds funky. :salute:

Bummer....

Oh horrors, horourrs! But I'm with Wyld on the de-fluffing measures - just read the same advice elsewhere - and make sure there isn't a load of the stuff caked around or under the fans.

And do keep posting!

Not to fret Nigel, You've donated generously to the Flightsim community here! Your 109's are the real reason I stay up at night. They are just deadly, beautiful works of art!

As for the PC, you never really know what a good cleaning with compressed air will do, as aforementioned. If its a graphics or memory issue, maybe some more updated versions will assist, at least for the time being.

But for now,Nigel dont fret, Rome wasn't built in a day. All great minds has setbacks one way or another. This is only Life, and we can only do our best.

Take Care.

I am starting a computer repair business, and I would say you should take out your video card and examine it very carefully for dust. Sometimes its not obvious , but where ever there is a fan, dust can build underneath...... to the point of causing odd malfunctions. Same with your cpu fan. Rarely would I recommend a complete new system. Ram and your power supply are also possabilities.:bump:

The causes of your computer trouble may be a loss of power efficiency due to dust and excessive heat. If you're afraid of getting in the computer heart you can also disconnect unnecessary cables, as USB peripherals, Keys, scanner, printers and so on, and try again...
For the rest I can't say more than Wyld45 to solve this problem.

After digging more in my downloads I've found interesting MkIII shemes that will please you,
They partially come from P-51b FSX repaints, it will be a surprise... But I'm sure that your computer will be OK again, before this new stuff will be finished.

All the Best

another thing you can do if you know how, if it is a multi board which most are these days try plugging your monitor in the board plug and remove your card if everything runs fine after that you know it is your video card hope this helps and I know how that goes when they die for no reason ....... Sorry to hear that.

Nigel! This is terrible! You are one of the pillars of this sim having made countless contributions in both advice and those @(*&*(&#$%(*&# 109's.

I concur with those who suggest a good cleaning of all fans and other interstices where dust can collect and block cooling air. Heat is a great insulator and the enemy of electron flow. I have done it in the past with remarkable results.

I do wish you the best of luck in getting back into the game.

Thanks, everyone! Now let me tell you what I've done, on the advice of a friend who is a computer engineer - pretty well exactly what you've suggested.

I removed the CPU fan (clouds of dust, much coughing and sneezing), removed the CPU (clouds of dust, much coughing and sneezing), and removed the video card (clouds of dust, much coughing and sneezing). Then I got out my modelling airbrush and compressor, and (leaning out of the window) let rip... (Clouds of dust, much coughing and sneezing...) And again (clouds of dust, much coughing and sneezing) and again (getting the idea?)

Then I cleaned the processor and heat sink, replaced the thermal paste with some new, and banged it all back together again, breaking two of the little attachments for the RAM in the process, but that doesn't matter. It's a desktop after all...

And it runs better than it has for ages! So although the PSU is a bit on the warm side and will need changing very soon (I've even got a spare somewhere that I'll try first, as PSUs with loads of molex plugs are getting hard to find), it's doing everything it's supposed to - except for the fact that the drives are Seagate/Maxtor, and you can ask Foute Man about that...

In honor of this occasion I shall allow myself to be shot down by one of your 109's

Did you hear an "AHHHHH" from the computer?.

Just a little word of advice, don't ride that dying PSU horse too long, I did in '06 and when it went it took everything with it. (Kinda like an ex-wife.) I lost 2 HD's, a high dollar (at the time) video card, MB and it even fried a stick of Ram. The thing was it was my own fault for not paying attention to what the PC was trying to tell me and when it popped, I knew immediately what happened. Also replace those iffy HD's, I've always had very good luck with Western Digital.

Good to hear you have your home entrainment system working Nigel.
Maybe you can get a new system at some point so you can enjoy your add-ons as much as the rest of use.:jump:

WUNDERBACH !

I had no doubt that your computer will be Ok again soon !
This means living near the La Ferte Alais arifield is dangerous for the computers, there are heavy clouds of dust flying around your home ! ;)
You need a little french maid to clean it up monthly... :icon_lol:

Let's go on Nigel with all your good stuff
and have a nice shiny day
