Aleutians Scenery

Hi All. As a lot of you know, I've been focused on the Aleutians for a while now. Scenery being the start. I pm'ed a member and asked for the old (circa.2002) Aleutians scenery and he duly sent it to me, and I installed it. Unfortunately it's an auto-install program. I ran it into a dummy folder to take a look and found virtually nothing. The idea being to do some tinkering and upgrading myself perhaps (Gawd forbid!). The scenedb/aleutians folder is set up but nothing else. In his readme, he mentions the scenedb/runways folder but there was nothing created in the dummy folder.....nothing for layouts or airbases.dat.

Yet when I load the sim, everything works very well. I don't know a lot about how this worked but it worked. The creator didn't put his handle or email address in the readme file so I have no way of contacting him. He says that he'll be releasing an updated version in the near future. Here we are well past that target date and nothing has surfaced to my knowledge.
The member who sent the files to me doesn't know any more than I do.

I'd like to get hold of any updates for this if possible......does anybody have a clue as to who this might be?

Cheers!:isadizzy:

Hi Alpha; How does it look? Anything close to todays textures, or airbase scenery? Is it winter scenery? It's just about the last frontier for cfs2.:salute::ernae:

Hey dood! Here it is......have a looksee. It won't harm your computer, of that I'm sure. I install it into a base install of cfs2 because SRTM mesh is different......you start to get water walls otherwise. I also tried it using DEM5, 7 & 8 meshes but it doesn't look right because everything all of sudden looks wayyyy to lush! Ya gotta remember it's barren up there.

I've also set my weather for beaucoup crappy to see how that looks......Interesting! Those guys flew in that stuff......I salute them!!

Also, there's no winter textures for that part of the world, but Uncle TGT says he's workin' on something. According to Rhumba, who did an updated SRTM based version (waterwalls), these runways are not in their proper locations with this scenery. Problem is, how does one access this stuff to improve it?

If you'd like Rhumba's version, let me know. With his you have only Kiska as a base and that comes with XP's Japan airfields.

Let me know what you t'ink.

Cheers Pal!

Yo Alpha_phalfa;

Are you talking about "Rolf's" Aleutian scenery & campaign?

Skype me & I'll shoot 'em to ya.

Yo, Dirty! I'll do that! I've included some screenies here to show youse what happens when you keep the CFS2 default scenery and load Rhumba's Aleutians separately via the scenery library. I've tried putting his files into scenedb/world/scenery, but everything turns out to be flatter'n a pancake and I still end up wit' the tsunami effect.

I'll upload some screenshots of the old version later and the difference will be readily obvious.

Cheers!

Thanks, bud; I will have a look at it. I am supposed to learn the basics of aircraft repainting pretty soon. I will be interested in checking this out and will try to help you with it. Maybe I can do some R.C.A.F. beau skins? With my learning power, it could be awhile! How old are ya? How's yer health?(hee, hee) Let me know if you need help doing any research, I will still have time to do something, after "school"!

If this looks like the East coast stuff I told ya about, we might have to learn how to do scenery ourselves! Well winter's here, we should have lots of time to learn new skills! :salute::ernae:

Here's 2002 Fort Glenn.....

It looks to me like this was a work in progress, to be fair. Better infrastructure, great mountains....and those Blahsted water walls again!

There are improvements in the works, but that may be a while as these guys are busy with a lot of different stuff and I just joined the queu. They've been very kind so I've become a patient boyo. Bottom line is that I'd like to use Rhumba's stuff because it's newer and better.....only problem is watah!!!.....too much of the doggoned stuff! Having said that, I may not be installing the new stuff correctly, too.

The main thing for me is that I'm havin' fun, learning so darned much right now, yet can see how much I really don't know as well and I find it frustrating at times......I'm sure you know how I feel.

I sure do appreciate your offer, RR.....I WILL take you up on it soon. Gawd.....If I were king of the woild for one day......just one day......there'd be changes boy!

Cheers!

Hmm.. Some of that stuff looks real good! Perhaps all is not lost. I know what ya mean bud, that's why I have so much respect for anybody that can manipulate our sim. I am a jack of no trades, and master of nothing. What a fella has to do is forget about flying all the wonderful missions out there, pick an area that interests ya, and learn how to do SOMETHING. I am just begining to understand the basics of MB. That is something a fella can learn on his own. (ok, it's a great help to have real mission builder's around who know so much) I know I will never be a Talon or any of the other "pros" out there, but at least I am happy with what I am doing.

I sure hope I learn how to repaint a plane, that's going to be next for me. This is something I could never learn on my own. I am going to devote most of my pc time to this.

I took a quick stab at building an airbase. Planting a basic runway was not too hard, after that, it gets a little tougher. (ok, a lot tougher, I will try again, someday)

Sooo......I am going to learn how to repaint, and forget about the rest until I can produce something I am happy with.

Why do we have this urge to learn any of this? A fella should be more than happy to use all of the fantastic add-ons that have been given to us.

It would be great to do the Aleutians from a Canadian view. It would be bloody fantastic if we could do it all ourselves, but, you know........... hee, hee. Someday, old buddy, me might just be able to! At our age, we better get a move on!

I'm here for ya, just let me know what I can do. (easy, non tech stuff!):ernae:

Why do you think there is too much water? The water is from the SRTM watermasks, which are from satellite imagery. It should follow the real world water. Are you saying the watermasks are wrong? Generally, its the CFS2 scenery that's wrong.

Dick

Alpha,

I think you're having trouble with installing the mesh.

Dick provided a new dem4km & LOD 5 mesh. Installing these involves removing some files from the scendb/world/scenery folder. Then you add & activate the LOD 7 & 8 mesh as you would other add on scenery.

If you haven't installed the LOD 5, then you're trying to "draw" LOD 7/8 terrain over old LOD 5, which may then mean you still have some misplaced "hills" showing in the water.

If you compare your Xavier Kiska to mine, you don't see the same rugged terrain I see, with the airfield under a "cliff" (due to the A16N flatten).

Dick, see my screenie - whilst not a "tsunami", it's pretty clear from these shots that the water tends to fold up into the land, like the difference between low & high water. Not a huge concern, but can un-nerve low flying pilots looking for land under the ever present low cloud & fog! Breaks the immersion factor just a little...

Hi Alpha_1,

The mesh files which are labelled terrain in the Aleutians package are not needed as Rhumba's mesh covers the islands. His watermasks also fix much of raised coast with water textures. Unfortunately the watermasks also drown some of the airfields.

As for ground textures, I think we need a set for high latitudes like the Aleutians and Norway, where snow is present on lower elevation mountains and hills.

I also found another package by the same authors - RCAF as pointed out in the earlier thread a few weeks ago. Here it is:

Kevin

Whistle! Now that "snow cap" scenery of Rhumps is looking great!:salute::ernae:

If the whole chain of islands looked like that, I'd be happy to leave the PNG area for awhile!

Those shots look great. I've never stopped off in the Aleutians, but I've over flown them several times on my way to Asia and those shots look just like what I saw when flying over them in the summer.

No reflection on you at all, Rhumba......this is all brand new to me. I had a gut feeling I did something wrong and Uncle TGT has pointed that possibility out. I put the lod 5, 7 & 8 in....5 the lowest, 8 the highest.....all via the scenery library. (I'm thinking I should've put the lod 5 into scenedb/world/scenery instead.) Put the dem4km in and still got a tsunami, so there's still something wrong with my install. That must be where I fouled up. Will get back to you guys on this.

Incidentally I took the author's coordinates on the old runways and looked in MB for that install, and of course, the runways are there.....why wouldn't they be.

My interest here is the new stuff that Rhumba's done, if done right I believe it's terrific. Would adding the watermasks be of any use here? My Irish is starting to come out, I'm just stubborn enough to get this right.

This is all a learning experience for me so bear with me guys, I'll get there. It's kinda like gettin' a mule's attention at times.....sometimes ya gotta give 'em a good one, right between da eyes.

Thanks guys for all the feedback......I'd be nowhere without it. KD, I'll take a looksee at that ADAK file, thanks.

Cheers!

UncleTgt,
I'd love to know what texture pack you're using that gives the results shown in your screenshot -

Please do tell, please, pretty please ...
Ro

I'm working on the few gaps that Dvslats didn't cover with his CFS 2 enhanced & FSX style texture sets ...soon!

In general, you can do pretty much any combo within an add on scenery set with judicious working on landclass & texture bmps ...

... here's a very rough first pass at trying to get the Aleutians looking "more barren" with snow patches on the ground. The bmp is still too busy looking & the colour match is way off, but you get the drift ...

This is still working with the landclass in Rhumbas zip - I'd say it's possible to make the western end a little busier by modding the landclass so it calls out different bmps, but the eastern end itspretty good as is - I just need to get the bmps colour matched for tone & I think we're done...

btw forgot to mention - all I've done is to add a texture folder for west & east aleutians scenery, so the rest of the world will still look as it should ...
